WJLA ABC 7 News At 500 January 21, 2015

As you can see, the snow now has gone away. You can see here we had a crew out here earlier today from abc 7 that did get some of the video to people that are out and also the snow that was coming down. Now, there were some people who did say that there were times when the roads werent that good. Heres what one woman had to say that we spoke with. A lot of the side roads are not really plowed yet. But i know they have to make that call a lot earlier in the day. Yeah, i was kind of expecting them to be let out early. As we were driving here 270 north and on 495 north as we were coming into frederick, there were a lot of trucks that were out. Trucks are mostly under overpasses, they were off to the side of the road and they werent doing much work at all. Probably because theyre waiting for the temperatures to drop. As we heard just a few minutes ago, it is 34 degrees here in frederick. The roads are wet. But as that temperature starts to fall thats when the problems could really start occurring and thats when those trucks are going to be needed. They are standing by for when they do need to be called out. As for now live in frederick, chris pabst abc 7 news. Ok chris and jim, thank you very much. At the height of todays snowfall, western parts of Northern Virginia may have been easy to mistake for a snow globe. Northern Virginia Bureau chief Jeff Goldberg live in leesburg with what hes seeing right now. Hi jeff. Hi alison. Good way of putting it. When the snow was falling, it was heavy. It was consistent. Really coming down. Now this is what were left with to clear sidewalks, the clear roads and a lot of snow on the grass. This is the kind of snow were dealing with, hard packed snow. Wet, good for making snowballs and probably what a lot of kids are doing out here today as schools were closed in loudoun county. When the snow was falling, plenty of people made the most of the opportunity. For some in leesburg the falling snow was a sight of calm beauty. Its calm you know. I like it though. Not bad. For scott harshman. Been a slow year. Seeing lights means green. After what has been a winter mostly without snow, harshman is finally busy plowing parking lots all over town. Just got my truck out of the 3500 transmission bill. Need to put it to work. Vdot trucks also getting a workout. 800 of them across Northern Virginia as the fast falling snow led to some challenging drnditions. Hopefully it wont stick. From chantilly to ashburn to herndon. Theyre driving slow, yeah. I think its because its whiting out a little bit. Other than, that the roads are fine. Not bad yet. But another hour or so im sure they will be getting much worse. Doug halderman isnt worried about his drive home from herndon to arlington. Its those other guys. A lot of people dont know how to drive in snow. That does concern me. This is no lost odyssey. Not too cold. Just enough to mess up things. Its a welcome destination. Get those green dollars. No question about that. Heres route 7, busy road in leesburg. Traffic is moving smoothly. Its been this way on most main roads throughout Northern Virginia simply because the pavement is warm. Not cold enough for that snow to really stick too badly. Certainly good news led to not too much slipping and sliding for drivers. Live in leesburg Jeff Goldberg abc 7 news. Thank you. Of course the stormwatch weather team is continuing to track conditions as the weather system moves out and another potentially more powerful one begins to take shape. Chief meteorologist doug hill breaks down the timing of the next Winter Weather threat in a few minutes. Leon . We go to breaking news coming out of annapolis where crews have recovered two bodies with the charred remains. This comes hours after news chopper 7 captured these images of the search crews of the investigators getting their first look inside the ruins. Stephen tschida is live in an annapolis to tell us what he just learned there. Whats the latest . I went back into the fire station and spoke with the captain russ davies just seven minutes ago. He was a bit more forthcoming oneonone than he was during the News Conference. We now know that those two bodies which were found today were discovered in the basement of this massive home but he did qualify that by saying the fire was so intense that the house literally co itself. The big question now is are these two bodies which were found today those of the adult owners of that home or two of their four grandchildren who are believed to have been in the house at the time of the fire . Investigators including those from the bureau of alcohol, tobacco and firearms began the meticulous painstaking and gruelling job of sifting the debris from a massive fire. An effort made all the more difficult by the knowledge the remains of six people including four children likely would be found here. I hope that they find those people soon. I really do. Its terrible. A search with a cadaver k9 resulted in positive alerts. The fire burst from this former castlelike structure on a piece of prime waterfront property early monday morning. It burned with such force, firefighters could only try to tackle it from the outside. They suspect i. T. Exec don pyle his wife sandy and four grandchildren were in the home at the time of the fire. As we started to process the scene, we located the bodies of two individuals. But at this point, investigators will not say whether those are the bodies of children or adults. The remains have been sent off to the medical examiner in baltimore who will identify the victims. Who knows, you know what i mean . I guess theyll get to the bottom of it. Well the medical examiner does the forensic work required to identify those victims. Investigators at the scene will continue to pour through that debris trying to find out what caused this fire and potentially, expectedly find more bodies. Reporting live stephen tschida, abc 7 news. Thank you stephen. Abc 7 will continue to monitor the search for the rest of the people who are in that house and the investigation into what sparked that fire. Well tell you any details from the scene as soon as we know them. The coming hours could yield some new clues as to what went wrong in last mondays deadly metro accident. Right now, officials from metro and the ntsb are briefing d. C. s area senators and congressional representatives. Several members of that National Capital delegation have demanded answers after smoke filled that metro tunnel, killing an alexandria grandmother and injuring more than 80 years. This afternoon, the virginia congressman paid tribute to carol glover on the house floor. Our thoughts and prayers go out to carols Family Friends and to all those whose lives were touched by this amazing woman. And you can count on abc 7 and our sister station newschannel 8 to continue pushing for answers in this metro investigation. Newschannel 8 will carry both the congressional briefing and the ntsb update as they happen. Thats at 6 15 tonight and 7 00 p. M. As well. Leon . Within the past hour an embattled member of the Virginia House of delegates surrendered to police. The grand jury indicted the delegate morrissey. He resigned his seat amid accusations that he had sex with his 17yearold secretary. Morrissey was then reelected to the seat in a special election. Now hes accused of forging a document that he vouched for in court and convincing the girls mother to lie about the authenticity. He is spending nights in jail for contributing to the delinquency of a minor. The republicans tonight including House Speaker john boehner wasted little time in calling president obamas state of the union fantasy land proposals. Polls overnight show that speech struck a nerve for voters worried about the direction of the company. So which of the president s ideas could we actually see come to life in the coming months . Senior political reporter scott thuman is live on capitol hill tonight with some analysis for us. Hi, scott hi alison. You know what we saw here from the president was that traditional wish list last night. So today, were taking a look at what is considered the probable vs. The improbable. If the president seems to have a little extra pep in his step today, its likely based on pride after his rallying state of the union address. So from cuba to iranian nukes, tax reform to Community College, whats likely and whats really a tall order. Both sides want to be on the offensive but there is pretty little overlap as to what theyre going to pursue. Start with the probable. I hope youll at least work with me. Authorization for the continued fight against the Islamic State looks doable and so do some sort of trade agreements with european and asianpacific nations says politicos jonathan topaz. But other items a bit tougher. Free Community College would be nice but the g. O. P. Wonders how does that get paid for . He has the right goal. He has the wrong approach. The gist of it increasing Capital Gains taxes for families making more than 500k and closing loopholes elsewhere. Sure, both sides see eye to eye on improving Cyber Security between private and public entitys and theres already a bill to hire more veterans. But how about his opposition to Keystone Pipeline or increased sanctions against iran instead of negotiations . Threats and fantasyland proposals from the white house will not distract the peoples house. Which may mean more executive actions like on cuba where words might not be matched by deeds. Any action on congress in terms of lifting the embargo is a pipe dream. Remember smiles aside its still very much a city divided. And for a president whose party took a real thumping in the midterms, he spoke with a lot of confidence. So did republicans meaning theyre going to have to agree more than disagree if they want to shed those poor Approval Ratings and label as a do nothing congress. On capitol hill tonight, scott thuman, abc 7 news. Thank you scott. In other political news this evening, maryland has a new governor tonight. During the term of my acting as governor. Congratulations. Larry hogan took the oath of office a few minutes after noon in the statehouse in annapolis. Hogan is marylands second republican governor in more than 40 years. Coming up on abc 7 news at 6 00 brad bell takes a look at the challenges facing hogan and a democratic controlled legislature. Well, still to come this afternoon, Girl Scout Cookies, you cant eat . Hmmm. Theres a new way to enjoy this treat coming up. A water main break shut down part of a major roadway. When things could finally get back open there. Why your doctor may give you a prescription to hit gym. It doesnt have to do with your weight. Marion Christopher Barry turned himself into police on a warrant this morning and appeared before a judge in court this tt2wut3nu d bt qv tt2wut3nu a qfl tt2wut3nu d bm qm, tt4wut3nu d dztq were learning more about the accusations of the d. C. Council candidate Christopher Barry, the son of the late former mayor marion barry. This comes after he was charged with three misdemeanors following an outburst last week. He turned himself in this morning before being released this arch. Afternoon. Sam ford was there as he faced a judge. What happened . Leon when the judge asked his name he said marion barry. Of course hes also known as Christopher Barry. He was charged with assault, destruction of property and attempted threats. Christopher barry turned himself in earlier today, left d. C. Superior court this afternoon free on his own recognizance. It stems from an incident january 13th at the p. N. C. Bank in china town. His arrest warrant says barry tried to withdraw 20,000 from an account that was already 2,000 overdrawn. And when the teller refused, the defendant became upset, began to curse, and stated words to the effect of im going to have someone meet you when you get off. Better yet im going around the corner and coming back. Christopher is the son of the late marion barry who died in november. The son is among the more than 20 candidates trying to win the fathers Vacant Council seat. I have the most experience as far as being the d. C. Resident as far as being a ward eight resident, life long. Today, the 34yearold barry said nothing as he left d. C. Superior court. Todays arrest was Christopher Barrys fifth time being incarcerated for a misdemeanor in the past eight months. Hes on probation from a previous arrest and a judge told him today to report to his probation officer within 48 hours. Barrys release requires him to stay away from the p. N. C. Bank and to come back here to court on february 13th. Court papers say a check had actually been placed in barrys p. N. C. Account when he went off but it had not yet cleared. Barry went off and picked up a trash can and threw it over a security barrier and destroyed a surveillance camera. Of course, all of that caught on video. And as far as we know he is still a candidate for the ward eight council seat of his father. Reporting live from d. C. Superior court, sam ford abc 7 news. All right, thank you sam. Ok. Lets turn our attention back to the weather now after we had a snowy day and some more down the road to come. Yeah, saturday were talking about a possibility probably of rain and better chance right now, maybe some parts north and west of the metro area if the storm gets closer to us a little bit of snow but mostly rain. Our concer. Everything is slushy mushy and wet and could refreeze in spots. Well explore those possibilities. Lets look at the cameras. Southern sections of frederick county, oakdale high school, snow started there late morning around 11 00 and didnt take long for the big, fat flakes to accumulate. The parking lot, everything melted off. Our concern, these kinds of places tonight, parking lots, sidewalks, roadways where theres puddles or standing water, temperatures below freezing could cause some glazing or icing. Real concern. As far as snowfall reports, the largest number weve seen is out in damascus, 3 1 2 inches. New market, not that far away to the north. 2 1 2, 2 1 2 in virginia and the numbers go down the farther south you go with washington officially only receiving. 4 of an inch. The temperatures are all over the place. Well above freezing in spots south of town. 36 in Reagan National but andrews, gaithersburg at or below freezing. Cloudiness out there will prohibit a rapid drop in temperatures. One of the things weve noticed on the weather maps is what appears to be a warm front almost. Just west of the appalachians. That could move in tonight and give areas of fog. Yep, areas of fog. So the temperatures below freezing even for several hours, the combination of water on the ground and fog definitely could cause some glazing in the overnight hours. This is todays clipper. Its out of here but in its wake, kind of following the same track. Another little piece of Energy Moving through Columbus Ohio to move across the river into West Virginia so well track that. And most of it will get gobbled up by the mountains. But it just shows theres still some energy in the atmosphere and enough to sustain the cloud cover. On one hand, clouds are good and prohibits a complete drop in temperatures. But even with that its moving fast enough by 4 00 5 00, 6 00 in the morning, that should be out of here. We will see partly cloudy skies with temperatures below freezing in many spots before the rush hour begins. Big picture, goodbye to the clipper today. Well see this piece of energy and what looks to be a bit of a warm front moving in. It could produce fog and all of our attention goes way to the southwest over northeast texas right now. Thats going to be an area where low pressure moves and heads northward. That will be our saturday weather maker. Right now if you check things out, computer model wise and how the atmosphere looks, i think well talk generally rain in our area. But theres some potential for maybe a little snow north and west. This is our futurecast. Centered at 3 00 in the morning. We still have cloud cover. You can see a bit of a frontal system moving through. Well brighten up and well climb close to 50 degrees in spots with sunshine and breeze. That will melt a lot of snow and it will dry up anything thats wet on the ground. Thats good. We get on to friday and stay under the influence of a dry weather pattern for one more day. Lots of sunshine but already during the day on friday clouds gather in the south from that developing system. As it comes up the coast, right now, this model has put most of the heavy moisture from d. C. South and east. Again, early in the game here. How about if it goes north a little bit or northwest where theres colder air . Then there could be some snow. Very active pattern. For the overnight hours drop down below freezing and climb to the upper 40s to near 50. Sunshine and the breeze tomorrow. Friday looks nice. The seven day right now well call it as a 70 chance of rain with the possibility of some snow especially north and west. It should linger in spots into sunday morning. Well clear out on monday. And then as we get into tuesday and wednesday, stay on the chilly side and another chance of precipitation, rain or snow by next wednesday. Lot of activity to watch there. Quiet stretch and now not so much. Ok. All right. Thank you. The Storm Watch Weather Team is on your side no matter what Mother Nature will bring this way.
