Stephen tschida is live in alexandria where a ruptured water main left 20 homes without water. Stephen . Maureen, you can see behind me, weve got a crew dealing with one of the problems with this bitter cold. Theyre trying to get this water main repaired and restore the water to this neighborhood. But this cold weather also is creating some big problems inside homes all across the metro area. Like crazy. So maybe like water fountain. Like going crazy. The biting cold made water mains brittle forcing some to burst. That had water running in the street but not in homes in this alexandria neighborhood. My grandma thought that the water was going to stop because of it so she stored up water just in case. Smart grandma. Her family at least had water in bowls. Across the region the cold weather iced up pipes outside and inside homes. Anwar caan raced from house to house preparing or thawing those pipes. Water line is frozen which makes a huge inconvenience. Just ask matthew campbell. When he woke up this morning, nothing came out of his faucet. Felt cold but i couldnt imagine it was frozen. Campbell considers himself lucky since his Main Water Line didnt rupture. All he has to do is wait for the space heater to melt the ice. Campbell still worries though about the continued cold weather and doesnt want to go through another day without water. Its been a bit of a pain i have to run out to use the bathroom. But, you know, i looked at the weather and weve got, you know down to the teens throughout this week. Yeah getting very cold tonight. Just about finished up here with repairing this water main. As far as what you could do to try to keep your pipes from freezing, all the plumbers we spoke with a couple of hours ago, were saying that they should tell the home owners that they should open up their cupboards here below their sinks to try to get some warm in there. That might warm up the lines and also turn on your faucets a little bit of cold a little bit of warm watered and let it trickle through the coldest hours. Reporting live, stephen tschida, abc 7 news.
