WJLA ABC 7 News At Noon January 26, 2015

I want to start out with this headline. Thats the winter storm warnings that had been in the west were just canceled and everybody now, the entire region is under a Winter Weather advisory. It wont reach storm criteria and the whole key is the storm itself which is still in its baby stages. Just forming off the coast of southeastern virginia. So whats going to happen here is you see on our stormwatch 7 Doppler Radar, these patches of snow, little blue areas are heavy elements that continue to rotate from south to north. And the snowfall we anticipate receiving here later this afternoon, this evening and tonight will all come in the forms of snow bands and snow pockets. If youre not in a pocket or band, youre not going to see much more than a flurry or two. And thats because were in the western side of this system. Big look at radar right now, the storm is intensifying off the carolina coast. Its going to widen, deepen intensify. That will pull in colder winds. That will bring in the possibility of more snow bands. The heaviest snow will be across new jersey through new england, blizzard conditions are likely. But for us well have to have a wait and see game all afternoon and evening and see how strong the storm gets and how much moisture will pull back into the cold air. So were finished with the concern. It will be snow, rain and sleet. That will be snow and a question of how much and well know that as we get through the afternoon and evening. Right now, we believe with the falling temperatures in the 20s in hagerstown now and up to the 30s in the south that will set the stage for the pockets and bands to produce two to five inches up the bay across maryland. North of baltimore and through the area, a little less to the south but clearly, the bulls eye to the northeast through new england and the jersey shore. Well have more for you in a few minutes and jacqui out in the snow right now. Hear from her, too in a minute or so. Autria . Well see you again. Thank you. Areas in northern and western maryland will see the highest accumulations in our region like doug was saying. John gonzalez is live in Frederick County with a look at the conditions out there this noon. John . Well autria not a huge snowstorm this afternoon but it has been snowing here in frederick, maryland for several hours. And its a stinging snow right now. You can see it has really covered up the grassy areas and most of the cars that have been sitting. As for the roadways here this is buckys town pike 85 heading to downtown frederick. You can see it is just very wet but that concern, not only is it very cold, it is windy. Take a look at old glory up at the roy rogers. We showed you that earlier this morning. That flag has been whipping around all day long so were not under freezing. At last about 35 degrees here in frederick, maryland. Those temperatures are expected to drop and as you heard doug say, possibly even more snow. Heres what weve gotten a band thats been sitting here pretty much throughout the day. Not only do you have snow but youve got ice as well. Youve got the ice underneath the snow that youre seeing it there and its really covered throughout this vehicle here and that gives you a sense of how much snow and sleet weve gone throughout the day. This is tyler mckenzie. We just found him putting air in his tires and weve been seeing that throughout the day. Folks making sure they have their car ready for this kind of weather. Are you worried at all about refreezing and possibly even more snow tonight . Of course i mean you know, you never know what the weather is going to do. Honestly, as long as everybody is taking care of the roads like theyre supposed to be doing, i dont have any really worries. Have you had any problems today so far . No. I havent had any problems today. Ive been easy getting to work this morning and now, that im allowed to head home im hoping that i have the same luck as well. Taking it slow. Tyler mckenzie here. Now, maryland state Highway Administration has more than 400 salt trucks out so definitely want to make sure you give those trucks enough room to maneuver. They were out last night and overnight pretreating. Well, right now, they are out salting all of these main thoroughfares. Reporting live in frederick, john gonzalez, abc 7 news. All right. John, thank you. And thats not too bad. Areas to our north are preparing for this to be a possible historic snowstorm. Lots of people as you see these pictures stocking up and hunkering down. Shelves are bare in many stores. This is a look at Grocery Stores almost completely ravaged. Philly new york boston could see anywhere from a foot to three feet of snow. Unbelievable there. And that of course affecting travel throughout the country. Airlines have already scrapped thousands of flights for today and for tomorrow. The big question is what is the impact here . Our Jeanette Reyes continues our Live Team Coverage at Reagan National airport this noon. Jeanette . Weve been keeping an eye on the skies for you since the wee hours of the morning and weve seen those cancellations just grow really by the hour. Take a live look here behind me. Things are pretty quiet. All you have to do is take a look at some of these boards and there are a lot of red and lot of cancellations as well. In fact i can tell you were looking at over 4,000 Flights Canceled around the country. Thats today and tomorrow combined. Most major airports in new york are seeing nearly half of all incoming Flights Canceled. Boston and philly also seeing major disruptions. United and u. S. Airways have already said they will likely halt all operations tomorrow in major cities there. We can also tell you at last check just minutes ago, local airports are seeing over 100 cancellations here at Reagan National were already seeing 84 Flights Canceled. Dulles and b. W. I. Also being impacted by all of this. Some people were pretty lucky today. Take a listen to what they had to say. Feels great. Were getting out of here. Doesnt affect me. I have a lot of friends at a hotel that have already had canceled flights so theyre stuck at a hotel full. I feel tremendously lucky and a tiny bit guilty. What were finding people are doing is before they head to the airport, call your airline or check in on that app. Its probably the smartest thing to do especially if your flight has not been canceled considering whats coming our way. Make sure you keep in touch with them. The good news though if you are impacted like some of our viewers, i was checking on facebook. A lot of people trying to move around today. If you have an impact a lot of airlines are opting to waive that change fee. Theyre waiving that for you so you can get that out of the way and fly out as soon as you can, possibly wednesday morning. Reporting live Jeanette Reyes, abc 7 news. All right, jeanette. Thank you. It was a rainy morning that gave way to the snow were seeing right now. Jacqui is live outside the abc 7 studios in arlington right now with a check on your current conditions. Jacqui . Its getting very blustery out here right now and the snow continues to come down. I dont know if you can see it. Every now and then were seeing these bounces coming off my jacket. Theres a little bit of these snow pellets which are mixing in. But nothing is hitting the ground right now. Notice the ground is just wet and checking conditions here and its not icy at all. I have my laser thermometer that we brought out to check because i think the sidewalks are going to start to get icy first as our temperatures slowly start to drop this afternoon. Well give it a go and see how its working. There we go 31. 9 degrees. Thats telling me its right around the freezing mark and things may start to get slick but everything is just fine on the roadways as we speak. So nothing is accumulating now but were expecting to start getting into that window late this afternoon and this evening when things may be starting to slick up. That does cause concerns for the evening commute and then the commute tomorrow morning as well with some lingering snow flurries and temperatures well below that freezing mark means that that could be an icy go of it as well. But right now, were still doing ok outside of our studios. Back to you. Autria . Ok jacqui thaur for the update. Abc 7 is the complete storm watch weather station. Were getting you through this Winter Weather alert on the air on line and even on your smartphone. Be sure to download the free abc 7 stormwatch weather app for up to the minute updates on the go. This noon were following a developing story. Authorities are investigating a device that was recovered on the white house grounds. The alleged drone flew over the white house fence early this morning prompting a large response by emergency officials. As Brianne Carter reports, authorities are now trying to find out who sent it and why. Scouring the grounds of the north lawn searching high on rooftops. At this hour the secret service is looking for additional clues after a drone crashed on the grounds of the white house this morning. You cant project all things that are going to happen but it seems like in this day and age with drones theres been so much talk about them. That would be a no brainer to have a contingency plan. The commotion first began after 3 00 this morning on the Southeast Side of the white house. Our cameras were there as fire and rescue teams swarmed the area. As you can see here one pointing large pole was brought in to help with the investigation. According to reports, authorities found whats known as a quadcopter or an Unmanned Aircraft lifted by four propelers about two feet in size. The investigation prompted an immediate lockdown for nearly two hours. President obama and first Lady Michelle were not home at the time. There is a device that has been recovered by the secret service at the white house. The early indications are that it does not pose any sort of ongoing threat right now to anybody at the white house. The question still remains, who is responsible . Or who was controlling this device . And did it have Something Like this . A camera on it to be able to record or see inside the white house grounds. While the circumstances of this incident are still under investigation, it comes on the heels of several other breaches at the white house just within the last year. In northwest, Brianne Carter abc 7 news. There are reports this afternoon isil has nearly been pushed out of the Syrian Border town after months of fighting. Some fighting took place today on the eastern edges of the city near turkey. A group claiming to support isil is taking responsibility for hacking the Malaysia Airlines official website. Malaysian airlines say the Domain Name System has been compromised but the internal server is safe. Coming up on abc 7 news at noon a dream home derailed. The problem holding up the Homes Construction and wedding for two wounded veterans. And the desperate search for a couple in georgia. What police say the couple did just before they went missing. Plus, measured in feet. Rather than inches. How authorities in new york and massachusetts are preparing for a big blizzard threat. And fortunately, no blizzard here. But doug and jacqui are both back with your snow totals and when this Winter Weather will move out. Thats coming up next on a welcome back. This is a live look at route 68 at route 219 in maryland and you can see the snow is coming down. Its there on the medians and the grassy areas. The roads, though are still pretty clear at this hour. Thats the good news. But things might change as you head home for your evening commute. In the meantime while the storm can be tricky for tonight and even tomorrow areas to the north are really preparing for a potentially recordbreaking blizzard. As abcs lona zack reports, workers are being urged to stay home. Schools are closing early. And Emergency Response teams are ready for whatever comes. 50 million americans are bracing for a winter wallop. Up to three feet predicted in some areas of the northeast. Boston is expected to be among the hardest hit. We have other soft hits from chile and ireland as well. Thousands upon thousands, we are ready. Logan airport will be closing at 7 00 p. M. Thousands of flights already canceled over the next two days. And on the ground, a travel ban has been announced starting at 9 00 p. M. In connecticut. In advance of the storms, residences in the northeast are clearing store shelves. Trying to get in the parking lot here was insane. Here in new york, there was a 30minute wait to get into this trader joes grocery store. New yorks mayor urging caution. These are blizzardtype conditions. This will not just be snow. New yorkers should not underestimate this storm. And all these little snow flurries pretty soon are going to change into a massive snow dump. Accompanying them, of course potentially Hurricane Force winds. In new york lona zack, abc 7 news. All righty. There you see it in new york. Theyve already got the snow. Thankfully, not really like that here. We have absolutely lucked out. We sent jacqui outside and shes live outside our studios here. Still a couple of flurries that youre seeing . Yeah just flurries. In fact, you know, from the last time that i saw you, things have changed just in the last five minutes. So nothing more than flurries. I might see a little bit of drizzle even mixing in. Also. I got a live picture i want to share with you from our Weather Bug Network from the Congressional Country Club where all of the snow is coming down and starting to coat the grassy areas there and notice the temperature there is 31 degrees. I want to show you some of the snow reports that were starting to get from across the region. The highest number that we could find from frostburg was three inches of snow. Inch for you in hagerstown as well as into martinsburg and 1 2 inch in herndon comes in at a 10 10th of an inch. I want you to notice that some of this snow is beginning to collect on top of elevated surfaces so weve seen it on cars and were seeing it on top of recycling bins and also seeing it a little bit behind me here collecting on the grass so well watch for this situation to change with our temperatures continuing to go down just a little bit as we head through the afternoon and more snow is on the way. For more on that chief meteorologist doug hill is back inside in the studios to see what is ahead. Doug . If youre watching earlier this morning, you may notice the warning and advisory map is a little different. Large area under winter storm warnings in the Higher Elevations have been canceled. The storm center causing that snow is diminishing and all the attention will be off the coast to see what the new developing storm will do. This is stormwatch 7 Doppler Radar and north of the metro area healthy patches of snow. In fact, the areas in blue showing a little heavier elements. I want you to Pay Attention to the motion. These snow bands are moving from south to north and that tells us this snow is coming from the upper level low in West Virginia and has nothing to do yet with the developing storm off the coast of the carolinas. A little Bigger Picture might put this into perspective. We have snow across western pennsylvania West Virginia upper level storm center that is going to yield its energy to the coast and weaken is spinning counter clockwise so you see how the moisture is coming up like this, the precipitation involved with the developing storm is moving this way at the moment. But later this afternoon and this evening, once this coastal storm really starts to intensify, well start to see the winds turn more to the north and northeast until the snow develops. Well start moving to the south and well get it from wrapping around the storm center. Thats a real tricky proposition sometimes because you got to figure exactly how far inland is this storm going to throw its moisture . It depends where the center is. How strong it gets. How wide it gets and there are a lot of things in motion here. So heres what you need to know. For the next couple of hours at least, were still going to have some of the local bands and pockets but you notice over the past few hours how some of this since this morning, some is dissipating. Thats because the energy is in process of transferring over the developing coastal low. There it sits. There it intensifies. Over the next five six, seven hours, we think most of the snow out here will pretty much go away and then well have to wait and see how deep this gets how strong it gets. Exactly its core as it moves north. That will determine how far back to west it will throw the snow. Some areas are going to get walloped. For the moment were above freezing in many areas. So any snow for the sleet that jacqui was describing outside, that will melt. Look at the temperatures to the north, theyre getting colder. As that storm off the coast intensifies, the colder air will sink from the south and we think by the time the final flake falls tomorrow this is the band that were thinking about. Two to five inches in the blue areas and much less far south and east. The bulls eye will be closer to the coast. Look at the next seven days well get through and remind you, have an update coming up live here on abc 7 starting at 1 00 p. M. Will be first of our hourly u
