Passengers heard a loud boom and within seconds the cabin was filled with smoke so thick. One said you couldnt see the person next to you. Those oxygen masks drop automatically when the cabin loses pressure. This time they had to be deployed manually. That seems to take forever. David kerley has the images from inside that cabin. Reporter frightening moments. Smoke in the cabin. One passenger helps another put on an oxygen mask. A baby crying in the background. The jetblue a320 in the air from long beach just a few minutes when smoke pours out of the right engine. But its getting into the cabin, too. The engine blew. Smoke started to come through the cockpit. And it was chaos. Reporter while this was going nonthe cabin, the pilot quickly turned around and 13 minutes after takeoff. 1416 is on the ground. 1416 will be evacuating. Reporter slides deploying and passengers started sliding out while pilots wondered if the engine was still a problem. Smoke out of the right engine. 1416 appears no smoke out of the right engine. Reporter one passenger was transported to a hospital for observation. The only possible injury after these scary moments of breathesing oxygen, waiting to get back on the ground. The only thing i could really think about was my son. So i probably say it was the best feeling that i probably had in my life to date, yeah. Definitely, it makes you think about life. Reporter a passenger tells us when they all got on to the republicanw runway, they all looked back at the aircraft and applauded the pilot and his landing. So far no sign of fire. David kerley, abc news, washington reagan airport. High drama at the Phoenix Airport where a manhunt halted flights and delayed anxious passengers for hours. It began with a shooting at a gas station. The goneman then led police an a highspeed chase to the airport where they lost him. A surveillance camera caught this image and the hunt began. Passengers waited as the terminal was put on lockdown. Police finally captured that suspect after a threehour search. A shooting outside of Gainesville Florida has left eight members of a family dead including the goneman. Don spirit called 911 threatening to harm himself and others. By the time police arrived, everyone was dead. First deputy on scene made contact with the subject who later committed suicide. Deputies searched the residence which revealed multiple victims with apparent gunshot wounds inside the residence. Spirit killed his adult daughter sarah and six of his grandchildren ranging in age from 3 months to 11 years old. They have no motive for the killings. In 2003, spirit was reportedly sentenced to three years in prison for possessing a firearm as a convicted felon after accidentally shooting and killing his 8yearold son during a hunting trip. Police in Northern California have a suspect in custody accused of deliberately setting that monster wildfire east of sacramento. Its known as the king fire.
