Tonight, we ask her about donald trump, and the fbi investigation into her email, the vp list, and her late mother. I just want to show you this. This is the crowd thats waiting for you. Oh, my gosh. Look at that. Oh so, this is eight years ago to the day you conceded. Tonigh very different reason. Thats right. Its almost hard to it really is. Is it sinking in . This is sinking it in. I can tell you that. Its an overwhelming feeling, david. Really. Ive heard you were editing a speech until 30 seconds ago. Reporter she tells me she will embrace the history. Im trying to capture the history without being overcome by the emotion of it. Reporter theyre chanting your name. Will you talk about your mother tonight . I will. That was one of the choices that i made. Its hard often for me, as you remember from our interview, to talk about her without getting really teary. But i couldnt really think of how to give the speech without talking about her. Reporter before she steps out on to that stage, she sits down with us. Madam secretary, thank you. Thank you, david. Reporter youre about to walk out onto that stage as the first female presumptive nominee for a major party for president. And im curious, personally, what this moment means to you. Well, i think its going to take some real time to absorb and reflect on what it means to me personally, what it means to our country. But just as i look at this night, and feel the joy and the sense of both possibility and responsibility. It means a great deal to have the faith and trust of so many people. The first time in our nations history that a woman will be a major partys nominee. [ cheers and applause ] reporter this country has watched you as first lady, then elected to the senate, then a Bruising Campaign for president eight years ago. Right. Reporter but now youre back. Right. Reporter what is that moment for you . Well, i didnt really believe back in 2008 that i would ever try this again. And so when i conceded and then went to work immediately for then senator obama, thats where i saw my future. We were supposed to talk tonight, but we havent yet tonight. Reporter and after her speech, that phone call with the president. Has he signaled to you that hes ready to fight the fight for you . Well, i think he has signaled that hes ready to fight the fight against donald trump. Reporter House Speaker paul ryan was asked about donald trump in his comments on the judge born in indiana of mexican heritage. And speaker ryan said, claiming a person cant do their job because of race is the textbook definition of a racist comment. Do you think that donald trump is a racist . Well, i dont know whats in his heart, but i know that that comment about the very accomplished federal judge who was born in indiana to parents from mexico was a racist attack. Reporter in the last 24 hours senator tester, a key democratic leader, was asked about the idea of a clintonwarren ticket. Elizabeth warren, of course. He answered, is the country ready for two women . I dont know. Well, im not going to get into Vice President ial choices, but i have the highest regard for senator warren. Reporter lets put her name aside, though. Do you think the country would i think at some point. Maybe this time. Maybe in the future. Reporter is Bernie Sanders would he be Vice President . Were gonna be looking at everybody who has something to contribute. Reporter how short is the short list, secretary . Well, we dont have a short list yet. Reporter do you think its time for a meeting with senator sanders . Well, im certainly reaching out. Our campaigns are talking to one another. I want to unify the party. Reporter you have said that donald trump does not have the right temperament to be president. He said of you that you lack judgment. He points to your emails. The last time we sat down, you apologized. Youve said it was mistake. But trump says fbi investigation aside, that what Hillary Clinton is guilty of is, quote, stupidity and bad judgment. And he asks, how can a person with this kind of judgment become the president . Well, again, im not responding to any of the personal attacks that come from donald trump. Reporter he did bring up the emails, though, again tonight. Hes going to in this general election. You know that. Uhhuh. Reporter can you assure the american people, and the Bernie Sanders supporters who you now have to court, that there isnt anything coming from this fbi investigation thats going to change the course of your campaign . Absolutely. Reporter youre confident . Absolutely. Yes. Reporter are you ready for that debate stage against donald trump . Obviously. Reporter she tells me it will be a singular moment in american history. You told me in september that you still hear your mothers voice. Uhhuh. Right. I do. Reporter what would she say to you as you walk on the stage tonight . Well, she would be really excited and proud. She would be like i am, overwhelmed by this historic moment. She taught me so much in my life, including how to stand up to bullies, which apparently is going to be very much in demand in the upcoming campaign. And she would just give me that unconditional love and support. President obama revealing he did watch the speech last night, and the white house was moved by the history of the moment. And president obama called Hillary Clinton as well as senator sanders. Weve learned he will visit the white house tomorrow to talk to the president. And cecilia vega, is this part of the democrats battle plan against donald trump . Reporter it seems to be. The meeting tomorrow comes at the senators request. And donald trump, speaking out as well with his wife and family, with teleprompters. And promising republican supporters he wont let them down. Tom llamas on the trump campaign. We are the champions reporter tonight, Top Republicans hoping this is the donald trump who leads them into the general election. I understand the responsibility of carrying the mantle, and i will never, ever let you down. Reporter with two teleprompters, his family in perfect formation, and little room for error, trump focused on substance rather than schtick. Were going to rebuild our inner cities, which are absolutely a shame and so sad. Reporter trump trying to defuse the firestorm he created by attacking federal judge Gonzalo Curiel because of his mexican heritage, even though the judge was born in indiana. Claiming a person cant do their job because of their race is sort of like the textbook definition of a racist comment. Reporter but today, Speaker Paul Ryan telling House Republicans he is confident trump would support their agenda. Not everyone is convinced. Scott walker, the governor of wisconsin, a battleground state, hinting he may not be able to support trump. I want to make sure he renounces what he says, at least in regards to this judge. Reporter now with trump trying to play nice with republicans, a promise hell take it to bill and Hillary Clinton. I am going to give a major speech on probably monday of next week, and were going to be discussing all of the things that have taken place with the clintons. I think youre going to find it very informative, and very, very interesting. [ cheers and applause ] donald trump, overnight. Tom, thanks.
