And a good evening to you on this holiday, honoring dr. Martin luther king jr. And we begin this week together with a new and urgent warning about security at the olympics. 17 days away. And sochi, russia, authorities now on the hunt for these eyes, this face. A young woman thought to be what they call a black widow terrorist, on a suicide mission. And the fear, tonight, she is already on the ground, where american athletes and fans from around the world will descend. We have the latest right now, tonight, from abcs chief investigative correspondent, brian ross. Reporter authorities believe the young woman arrived in the sochi area about a week ago. Somehow making it past the ring of security set up to protect the olympic games. Over the weekend, police distributed this wanted poster to hotels and at the airport, for a socalled black widow terrorist. She was identified as 22yearold ruzanna ibragemova, of dagestan, whose husband was killed in a shootout with police last year. The young woman was described as having a fourinch facial scar, a pronounced limp and a left arm that would not bend at the elbow. And Security Experts say, she is not likely to be traveling alone. When its women, they tend to operate in teams of two. And its very unlikely they would just send one of these teams into sochi. Reporter some 80,000 security personnel have been sent to sochi to create what russian president putin calls a ring of steel, about 60 miles long and 25 miles wide. Putin told george stephanopoulos, that will keep the winter games safe. Translator we will do whatever it takes. Reporter over the weekend, the group that took credit for the two recent bomb attacks in the russian city of volgograd, 400 miles from sochi, released this video purporting to show the two suicide bombers responsible, building their bombs, wiring themselves up and then traveling to their targets. Dressed in casual street clothes, the two men said their group had more of what they called surprise packages for sochi and for the tourists who will attend. Now, one u. S. Senator says, its just too dangerous to go. I would not go. And i dont think i would send my family. Reporter the threats to the olympics can be traced back to a decadeslong and bloody conflict, between russia and islamist militants in chechnya and dagestan, who seem to break away from russias rule. The people we see are the suicide bombers we see in the news now, these are the people who have grown up over the last 20 years with nothing but the legacy of that war. Reporter and the black widow attacks have been especially deadly. Almost 200 People Killed by them in suicide attacks in the last dozen years or so, diane. Tell me more about what the u. S. Is doing with these warnings coming in . Reporter there will be small teams of armed u. S. Personnel assigned to watch over athletes. As well, the pentagon said today, they made contingency plans to get americans out of there in a hurry, if they have to, including two u. S. Navy ships that will be on scheduled deployment on the nearby black sea. Thank you, brian. And our next big story in the news tonight, it is back. The brandnew polar plunge about to hit the midwest and the northeast with snow, ice, and bonechilling temperatures again. Abcs meteorologist, ginger zee, now, with the icy rescues already under way. Reporter a suspenseful rescue on a lake in missouri. Firefighters making their way to a man trapped in the frigid waters. All that drama on the ice after the recent bout of mild air. And it all comes to an end tonight. In roanoke, virginia, they are getting ready for a plowable snowstorm. Winter storm warnings in place from Western North carolina to parts of connecticut. And behind it . A surge frigid air. And, no, this is not the polar vortex. The polar vortex is a real thing. Its a circulation way up in the atmosphere above the poles. It is always there. Pieces of it break off in the winter. The chunk we got in early january was a doozy. It brought some of the coldest air in decades. From that guy letting in the cold air in chicago to the frozen fountains in atlanta. This time it will not be as cold. Its more the typical january air circulating around the polar vortex that is still far to the north. Simply put, a push of bitter cold with dangerous windchills and advisories for at least 11 states. And the difference this time is going to be how long the cold air sticks around. Ill show you that in just a moment. But first, the snowstorm we have to talk about it because places like washington, d. C. , have not seen as much snow as theyre going to get tomorrow through tomorrow night, in almost three years. Yes, were talking some four to eight inches in pink. And that could be conservative in some places. Could see even more. Thats why weve got winter storm warnings in place. And now, that cold air, i promised you. Lets look at it. We have 20s, 30s, in some places. But, boy, that freezing mark would be nice because were going to feel like we are sub zero for much of new england, parts of the northeast. And again, this lasts all the way through, in waves, until the end of the weekend. Diane . And we just thawed out. Thank you so much, ginger zee. And think of our next big political story, tonight, in the case of she said she said. And the question a new allegation of rough tactics by the team surrounding new jersey governor Chris Christie. This time, in the aftermath of hurricane sandy. Heres Senior National correspondent, jim avila. Thank you. Reporter january in jersey, designed to be a Chris Christie festival. Gop fundraisers in florida. And at home, the crowning of the favorite son. The state of the state address. And then, tomorrows inaugural. All capped off by the runup to the christiehosted super bowl. The super bowl is in new jersey. Reporter instead, its scandal whackamole. Today, christies lieutenant governor, denying she tried to bully the smalltown mayor of hoboken, into supporting a project the governor liked, by tying it to sandy relief funds. Any suggestion that sandy funds were tied to the approval of any project in new jersey is completely false. Its stunning. Its outrageous. But itstrue. And i stand by my word. Reporter Christies Office insists the 340,000 hoboken has received directly is no worse than other towns. Since most of the sandy relief went directly to individuals, not local governments. Ironically, hobokens mayor actually supported christie for reelection. Once tweeting, to be clear, im very glad governor christie has been our gov. I couldnt believe they were doing this. Reporter no comment from the governor, who saw new poll numbers today, showing his unfavorable rating doubling. With a majority not believing he was blindsided by scandal. Jim avila, abc news, new york. And overseas, now, to the major negotiations trying to bring peace to syria. There is a squabble over the guest list. The u. N. Withdrew its invitation to iran to join the talks, after strong objections from the united states. Syrias Opposition Group threatened to boycott the meetings if iran attended. And the peace talks are scheduled to begin in geneva on wednesday. And now, to north korea, and the american kenneth bae, the longestheld american hostage in that secretive nation. The former missionary appeared before cameras, dressed in a prison uniform, pleading with the u. S. Government, to do more to secure his freedom. And admitting to, quote, serious crimes against north korea. Obviously, being taped and with duress. Bae has been jailed in north korea for more than a year. And next here, tonight, were tempted to begin this story like a childrens book. 500 million miles from earth, a tiny warrior just woke up from a long sleep and sent a message to earth today, saying, in effect, im ready for mission impossible. The little satellite named rosetta, ready to risk it all to unlock the secrets of the universe. How . Heres abcs clayton sandell. Reporter today, tiny rosetta woke from its long slumber. And phoned home. Its the little craft that could. Soaring 500 million miles from earth, into the dark reaches of space. Its been resting for more than two years, saving its energy until today. Its destination . An icy comet orbiting deep in our solar system, an almost impossible target to hit. Think of it like firing a cannonball from los angeles, all the way to new york, trying to hit a specific horse on a spinning merrygoround. If it works, rosettas robotic sidekick will then land on the comet surface in november. In their soil, could be the origins of life. We hope to learn how life on earth came to be. And so, its a completely unique opportunity to dig back into t past. Reporter rosetta is now wide awake, and hoping its comet rendezvous will make history. Clayton sandell, abc news, denver. Go, rosetta. And we have word tonight that 50 million of us watched the 2 championship Football Games yesterday. 50 million. Seahawks broncos, on their way to the super bowl. And for quarterback Peyton Manning, a real triumph after neck surgery. You can still see the scar running down the back of his neck right there. And coaches worried he would never play again. Abcs ryan smith, now, says, last night, he showed us how wrong they were. Reporter a triumphant day for Peyton Manning and the denver broncos. Not just for the win against tom bradys new england patriots. But grace under pressure. Like this a bad snap, a bobble. Turns into another lacer beam pass from the fourtime mvp, just two years after a neck injury nearly ended his career. After all ive been through. Reporter four surgeries later, his vertebrae fused together. Surgeries like his limit mobility by 10 , making plays like this, all the more amazing. Is it shocking to think hes here . Yeah, it is shocking to think two years ago he wasnt even Strong Enough to play in that season. Reporter theyre facing a young, hungry seattle seahawks. Their quarterback, russell wilson, is just 25, already a force. But its their topranked defense thats really making waves. Leading the way with punishing hits and a brash cornerback, richard sherman, who made the gamewinning play last night. And then im the best corner in the game. Dont you ever talk about me. Reporter manning will have more tests on his neck after the big game. If theres more risk of injury, he may have to retire. But for now, with a comeback kid on one side, and a toughtalking defense on the other, this could be a super bowl for the ages. Ryan smith, abc news, new york. And on this dr. Martin luther king day, we want to take you live, now, to the memorial for dr. King. And tonight, we have a new tape to play for you of dr. Kings voice. And we owe it, it turns out, to an intern at a museum in new york, who was so serious about an assignment to look through boxes, he found dr. King on a tape, a year before he told the world he had a dream. Listen to him, on the way to the moment. Negroes north and south, still live in segregation, housed in slums. Reporter on this new tape, the voice of dr. Martin luther king striking the themes that would echo around the world, at that famous march on washington. Like this one. He is starting to counsel against despair. And with this faith, we will be able to adjourn the counsels of despair. Reporter just as he would do, at the foot of the capitol. We will dig out of the mountain of despair, a stone of hope. Reporter and on this newlydiscovered tape, dr. King cites an old slave preacher, giving this message to anyone who would listen for years to come. Lord, we aint what we ought to be. We aint what we want to be. We aint what we gonna be. But thank god, we aint what we was. Dr. Martin luther king. And coming up, next right here, real money. You told us, this is your number one goal in 2014, getting a raise. Im writing the check.
