WJLA ABC World News With Diane Sawyer July 18, 2014

World news begins now. Good evening. In for diane, great to have you here on this friday night. We begin with the investigation into the jet shot down. 298 lives lost, and tonight, the stunning images. One man standing there, rescuers overcome with what they saw at the scene all day. And tonight, reminders everywhere of the lives lost. A deck of cards, a childs drawing. And heres what we know. One american victim, and president obama saying hes confident the plane was brought down by a surfacetoair missile. We begin with terry moran, and the new clues coming in tonight. Reporter the grim work of recovery in ukraine. A disney backpack, a baseball cap. Testifying silently to the unspeakable loss here. They look for bodies in a field of sunflowers and found some. A local described the terrible sight. There was an explosion, and then people started falling from the sky. Late today, an International Team of investigators arrived, but they were stopped before they got to the crash site. It is believed to be the work of separatists. And president obama noted the rebels have already shot down other planes. A group of separatists cant shoot down military planes without sophisticated training and equipment. And thats coming from russia. Our reporter made it to the crash site today, where a rebel scoffed at the claim that they were responsible. And 80 children, their bodies now marked like all the others with white flags, waiting to be collected and brought home. And this is where the bodies will be brought and where the loved ones will come to claim them, trying to fathom what happened and who is responsible. And the focus turning to the rebels. This evening, we go to the evidence. An intercepted phone call, and images in days and weeks leading up to the incident, including this wedding video. Brian ross has this story. Reporter until now, the prorussian rebels had welcomed all the attention they could get. Get. Even putting up billboards to support their claim. At this recent wedding of one of the fighters, the guest of honor was their top military commander, a russian, not a ukranian, who now uses the name igor strelkov, which means igor the rifleman. We know hes had a longstanding relationship with the russian intelligence services. Reporter under strelkovs command, the separatist militia fighting in ukraine has been known as a ruthless gang of thugs. Wellarmed and trained by the russians, according to u. S. Intelligence officials. The russian government is seeking deniability by employing covertly russian exsoldiers. Rambotypes. Reporter today, ukraine released this footage it claims shows the actual sa11 missile launcher near the scene right before the strike. U. S. Officials believe they made a mistake because they were not able to use the system. They made a mistake and shot down what they thought was another ukranian cargo plane. Reporter in phone intercepts made public by ukraine, one rebel thought it was a military plane that had been shot down. Ukraine Officials Say the rebel commanders realized their mistake, selling russian officials it was a civilian aircraft, not military. Are there any weapons, one person asks. Nothing at all. Civilian belongings, medical scraps. Towels. Toilet paper. Told that the wreckage made clear it was a malaysian airliner. Another person answers, well, then, it was bringing spies. Why were they flying . Theres a war going on. Today, ukraine officials released this video showing what they said was a surfacetoair missile battery in the same area as the crash being returned to russia, with only two of its four missiles still onboard. Ukraine says that means the coverup is under way. And igor the rifleman is nowhere to be found. I want to bring in Martha Raddatz and colonel steven this animation of this missile, sources saying it took just 30 seconds to reach the jet . It travels 2 1 2 times the speed of sound. So, it was about 30 seconds before it hit the airliner. Much faster than a shouldermounted missile can go. And the sa11 is not a heatseeking missile. The operator picks a target and it sees the reflection of the energy off of the skin of the airliner, and locks on. And steve, a lot of questions on whether the black boxes were recovered. But you made the point, investigators looking for something that may be even more telling. Well, its important to note that the black box will only tell us it was a perfectly good airplane right up until the point of impact. We need to get investigators to the crash scene, looking for clues like explosive residue or fragments. Were looking for who should be accountable. Tonight, we turn to the faces of the families onboard. And to the american, a young man on the way to a family vacation. And three children saying goodbye to their parents with their grandfather. Lama hasan with the stories behind the pictures tonight. Reporter emerging tonight, the faces and stories of those 298 souls lost onboard flight mh17. We now know there was at least one american onboard. Quinn lucas schansman. A dual dutch citizen seen here with his girlfriend. He was on his way to meet his family for a vacation in malaysia. An avid soccer player, his former team reeling today. We can barely comprehend the news. And 25yearold dutch citizen karlijn keijzer, from indiana university. She was a varsity rower there. Her classmate, remembering her smile she was always smiling. Reporter we now know there were 80 children onboard that doomed plane. Including evie, otis and mo maslin, traveling home with their grandfather to start school in australia. Their parents still on vacation in holland. Their aunt writing on facebook, i will miss you so very much. At least dad is looking out for you. And on social media today, haunting last glimpses of the victims. Dutchman regis crolla posting this image of his boarding pass moments before takeoff. The caption, bali. Im so excited adios, amigos. And this photo of the plane. Posted by another passenger, cory schildren. Along with that now eerie message, should it disappear, in australia, one family hit by an unimaginable double tragedy. A son and his wife lost when the other Malaysia Airlines plane disappeared in march. Now learning their stepgranddaughter was onboard flight 17. And some stunning nearmisses. Barry sim and his wife got bumped from that packed flight, too few seats available. Dutchman gert jansen. His wife and their 12yearold son, bumped too. Shocked today when they learned of their narrow escape. I was completely shocked, because that was our plane that we booked three months ago. Reporter they set up this makeshift memorial. People trying to pay their respects, trying to deal with this tragedy. Thank you. And it was last night here, we asked the question, why was this jet allowed to fly in this airspace . How many planes are flying above dangerous hot spots every day . Reporter when you board a plane, you know where you are going. But how are you getting there . You might be flying over Something Like this. Thats what Malaysia Flight 17 did. Flying right over the fighting in eastern ukraine. Why . Malaysia Airlines Says its route, like a highway, wasnt closed down. It was just told to stay above 32,000 feet. It doesnt matter if someone says, well, youre okay above 32,000 feet, maybe you want to be a little bit more conservative. Reporter as russia took over crimea, that airspace was closed to commercial jetliners in april. But International Aviation officials did not close the airspace over eastern ukraine. Even as tensions escalated, and even after a warning two weeks ago from nato that separatists were training on longer range antiaircraft missiles. It is very hard to understand why the information from a war zone where a war is getting hotter and people are now saying that there are medium and long range missiles being used, why wasnt that cut off as a flight route . Reporter it is tonight. After the crash, the restricted area expanded to eastern ukraine. So now jetliners will have to fly around, over the north, or a southern route. Each detour could mean about ten extra minutes and an additional fuel cost of up to 1,500, as well as paying the countries they fly over. It all adds up, which is why Many Airlines still choose to fly over other hotspots around the world. Even ones the u. S. Warns about. Including the middle east and afghanistan. Changing all those International Flight routes would be chaos. An example, the area mh17 flew through. 16 other airlines used that same exact corridor. Thank you. And we move the Israeli Ground incursion in gaza. Plumes of smoke filling the air. And look, this is what the israelis say theyre trying to destroy. Tunnels theyre saying were built and used by hamas. Alex marquardt is there. Reporter in just a few hours, the fighting has intensified. Drones and fighter jets dropping missiles. And flares leading the way to this ground assault. Tonight, this deafening boom. Under the cover of darkness, Israeli Forces pushing forward and pushing palestinians back. As we saw today, driving through desserted streets. This entire neighborhood empty. Everyone has fled. As we can hear the sounds of fighting nearby. Their main goal, uncovering hamas vast network of underground tunnels. This video boasting of using the tunnels to infiltrate israel. We visited this house, hit this morning by an israeli tank shell. This man told me his brother and son were killed. He wants hamas to keep fighting. And leaders expressing support, but all signs here point to the battle only growing. Alex, thank you. And still much more ahead on a friday night. The major story back here at home, the wildfires. The hospital evacuated, and the major highway pileup. And well return to our top story on this special edition of world news. Ve flat feet. I found this out at the free dr. Scholls foot mapping center.
