Kimberly we are joined by tom ferguson, from the diocese of arlington. Welcome. We were at mass today in washington and everyone was talking about this. A lot of catholics we talk to were surprised that you could be excommunicated for having an abortion. They hadnt seen that. What has the tradition been . The church says abortion is a great sin and because its a matter, it not only wounds a persons relationship with god but with the community of the church. So there are two things we are talking about here. A and said a penalty of excommunication a sin and a penalty of excommunication. What you found when you talk to people is what i expect. That most people think of abortion and think of sin because of the wound with god but most dont think excommunication is a consequence as well. Its not as commonly known. Jonathan a huge move from the pope but not a surprising one. He is sort of the pope of the people. When you grow up as a catholic and say if you get divorced or have abortion, those are the sins you dont come back from, from the church. Pope is making it clear not so fast. We need to forgive. Are you surprised . Im not surprised. There is a lot of misunderstanding and misperception. We think of someone excommunicating for an abortion. You cant be excommunicated unless you realize its attached to the action. You dont inkir incur it unless you are unaware that it will bring the consequence. Its rare a person is excommunicated because of having an abortion. What people realize is the nature of thes ago as a sin and it ruins the relationship with god. At times its a great deal of guilty and shame attached to that, what pope francis is doing is already in motion in the life of the church. The movement of the spirit to focus on a message of mercy. Reconciliation. Kimberly that is the year of mercy from 2015 to 2016. So is it just for this year . What happens after the year of mercy is up . Its not a sensation. The ability to forgive the sin of abortion has always been there for the priests. What pope francis is doing is not changing the churchs policy or teaching. He is talking to two groups of people. First he is talking to priests and say being who you are. You know you have an ability and the sacrament of concession and people will approach with a contrite and a sorrowful heart. He says priests are already are the face of the fathers mearssy. Be who you are and be it well. And with people laboring with a sense of guilt or shame know when you come to confession you will find the priests who are encouraged more than ever to be the face of god the fathers mercy for you.
