Passing through the snow there, this is just at around 2 00. Its like whiteout conditions. Alison you couldnt see the capitol dome from the view from pennsylvania avenue. As the storm clears out, we are monitoring a frigid finish. Michelle abc7 continues storm watch coverage from crews around the d. M. V. Jonathan from the cleanup to conditions on the roads as they improve today, lets start off with the temperatures. They are falling. Stormwatch7s doug hill is tracking all of it. If they didnt shovel they will have ice to contend with. Doug the problem now is the snow is on the ground, its done. We have a couple of snowshowers that wont amount to anything. We have had melting and slash, standing water from the rain, the melted sleet. The temperatures now in the 30s and the 40s. Tonight the temperatures will drop like a rock so everything is that is wet is going to freeze. So we have the potential of very hazardous driving puddles along roads where the water melts and the streams and comes down over the roadways because the temperatures will be in the upper teens to low 20s by morning. That cold enough to negate effect of the brine or the salt on the road. Still comfortable now relatively knowing that the average temperature should be 55 degrees. We are far from that. That is the numbers around the area here. The chills are dropping into the teens and the 20. It will be like early january tomorrow morning. Well be in the 20s by midnight. Chills in the teens by that time. In the morning we are forecasting low temperatures, the air temperatures. 19 to 23 around the area. The slush and the water and the mush, well, that is going to create problems around the area for certain. We are going to see the wind chills make it feel like its in the teens. All the snow we had here, even with the temperatures in the 30s are starting to melt away. It hasnt melted yesterday. Happened in one of the towns, frederick, maryland, where they had about eight inches of snow. Thats where we find brad bell. Brad . Brad you mentioned snowshowers. We are getting one now. Its a flurry. Its pretty out here. If town of frederick is coming back to life. Market and church. Most of the sidewalks have been shuffled and cleared off. You can look to Market Street itself and you can see there is slush but mostly the pavement is wet. That is a big improvement from what we saw early this morning. At daybreak even i270 was treacherous. As we traveled south this morning we found the road snowcovered and also seemingly covered with plows working to clear the snow. Across maryland, the state Police Reported more than 200 incidents on roadways since 8 00 p. M. Last night. We spot two cars in strip. The driver telling us he slid off the roadway. By midmorning the salt and the plows had the upper hand with every road we travel down to wed pavement. The highest snow total was in the town of therma. Seven inches. The chore for rob and his son dylan and robin. When i woke up there were eight or nine inches. Throughout the day it has slowly gotten smaller. Brad his complaint is the snow is heavy to shovel. Doug is talking about the falling temperatures. Look at all this water. It is everywhere. It is going to freeze up as the temperatures drop. That will be a problem not just on the roads but people Walking Around here as well. So tomorrow morning we will talk about black ice. In frederick, brad bell, abc7 news. The issue of black ice is a concern across northern virginia. Vdot will be retreating a lot of the roads. They dont want the refreeze to be a huge problem tonight. This is snowtrak7. Visibility here in the vehicle last night and this morning was not good. Today things are doing just fine. In leesburg, they got four to six inches of snow and like what brad talked about, the heavy wet stuff. Earlier this morning the dugout was happening all over leesburg. We saw the snow shovels, the snowplows, the tractors. They were everywhere. It didnt seem like it at times. There were more snowplows on roads than the cars and truck. People were hard at work getting things cleared out. Loudoun county schools were closed so kids were home. But driving there were difficult conditions early in morning. People were sliding out here part the roads were clear and the people we spoke to were pleased with the condition of the roads this morning. The roads are good. Just got to be careful with the slush in the middle but otherwise its good. Freeways were clear. My neighborhood was clear. Cant complain. Im worried that the water will freeze up at night and turn to ice. That is the concern. The refreeze. You are looking at the puddle. This is as the temperatures drop to turn into a situation later tonight. Coming down a small hill. You dont think it is much. But you can slide out easily. Vdot has 4,000 pieces of equipment and they will retreat the roads to reduce possibility of the refreeze or and reduce dangerous conditions on the roads. Jeff goldberg, abc7 news. Alison as you know, this has been a monster storm. From the blanketing streets in pennsylvania overnight and this morning to upstate new york. It was a big one. Check out this shot. We have one from central park. It was quiet as the snow fell. We have a look at the impact in the northeast. We are in new york city pelted by the freezing rains and the high rain. We got less snow than predicted here but its still a mess. Even with the mess, the sleet on top of snow. The mayor just announcing he still wants everyone off the roads. Only essential workers should be on the roads. They want to get it cleaned up. There will be school in new york tomorrow after they have everything cleaned. Boston announced they still wont have school. They are getting the brunt of the storm right now as it continues to barrel up the coast. The since the storm moved a little to the west but its still a mess here and will be the rest of the day. The snow is still falling. We will have the Winds Continuing tonight. Alison you mentioned boston. They are not strangers to noreasters but they are getting hit hard. What else are you hearing about how they are handling the storm . You know, as you mentioned, boston is prepared for the storm. Six days away for spring. But it doesnt mean much in the northeast. They had 5,000 vehicles on the road throughout massachusetts getting ready, putting salt out on the roads. They are taking a proactive stance say due to the heavy snow and the high wind gusts as well. Up to 50, 60mileperhour on the coast. They are canceling school for tomorrow to make sure everyone stays safe. Alison thank you so much. Jonathan some schools did cancel and the kids were happy. Maybe you saw them out today building snowmen were open on a delay. Suzanne kennedy was at Lafayette Elementary School in northwestern where mayor bowser dropped by to say hi. She had a reminder, too, for folks. Mayor bowser make sure the sidewalks are clare in front of the homes or businesses. That is within eight hours of daylight, correct . Mayor bowser correct. When the storm event ends. We are asking them to get out as soon as possible and clear the sidewalks. Jonathan that is a reminder for all. Be careful when you do that. Stephen tschida, abc7 news. Jonathan california man blocked iy4n traffic and savagely beaten. This is dash cam video from san francisco. You can see the bikers performing tricks on road and acting like idiots. Alex was trying to get through them. He tried to exit the road and he made contact with one of the riders. Then a black car steps in and cuts him off. Then the bikers surround him. He gets out of the car and that is when he is attacked. If there werent so many people that videotaping the video they could have gotten away with killing me on the side of the road. Legs, broken nose and abrasions and the attackers are still out there. Alison ivanka trump getting out of the fine jewelry business. The president of the brand says they will focus on affordable fashion yulery. Jewelry. The higher end collection had items for thousands of dollars. Michelle now a real head scratcher from nordstrom. These are the clear knee jeans. Nordstrom says they have a futuristic feel. There is nothing but screen on the screen. The travel lane is open. We have back to better in the d. C. Area. We have a couple incidents but its been quiet for the past few hours. If you make your way out, we have report of a stall off to the right shoulder of the ramp from the inner loop to i95 and springfield at the interchange. Cant see anything. This may be to the top left side of the screen if its any activity we may see. For the most part you can see that everyone else is good through the area. Look at the beltway. Nice and quiet and life. Usually on tuesday we have bumper to bumper traffic. But today with the folks at home and the school out for the day, volume is light. 95 southbound. No report of issues from the mixing bowl. 66, no reported issues east or westbound between centreville and the beltway. Michelle thank you. Because d. C. Schools are open, that means children are out walking home from school. That is why the sidewalks have to be clear. So nobody is forced to the streets. D. C. Bureau chief sam ford continues Team Coverage from northwest. Is it a slippery walk home . Sam in some areas. This is the sidewalk be front of walker jones the sidewalk is cleared. But the next box its not School Property but i dont think a child would have trouble moving through that. Walker jones and the other schools in d. C. Had classes as normal today. Across the d. C. , children made their way to schools and only twohour delay while the neighboring jurisdictions all shut the doors. In d. C. , the accumulation of the snow between one and two inches. At most were three in some area. City crews had the streets clear early while some students and the parents are miffed that d. C. Did not shut down today. A number of parents supported mayor bowsers decision not to close. It makes it easier for the parents. You can go to work, right . In that sense its good. I dont think eva was happy today. She wanted a snow day. It dont matter. As soon as you are going to school i dont care what it is doing outside. Im not mad a nothing. Make them go to school. Thats where they need to be. Sam coming up at abc7 news at 5 00, we will hear from the mayor and her reason for keeping the school open today. Reporting live from northwest washington, im sam ford, abc7 news. Michelle thank you. Talking about tomorrow and what will happen. Delays or cancellation . Doug the areas that had significant snow melting and slushy, some areas got very little snow at all and they had ice. Freezing rain that has melted off. But it will probably get so cold it will refreeze. Standing water or puddles there will be ice. There will be delays because of that. Its an issue. Same story tomorrow and thursday morning as it stays cold. Focused on rockville. The air temperature is the parking lots are in fine shapes. But the puddles will freeze solidly unless they are treated with salt or chemicals. The air temperature in the 40s. 37 at washington, d. C. 42 in warrenton. 37 at joint base andrews. Dealing with the wids speeds that are consistent now. The winds will dry a little bit but not that much. The second thing is dry wind chills low. There is colder air tonight. At the moment the temperatures are well above freezing and feels like 20s in most spot. But tonight with the combination of lower temperatures and the strong northwesterly winds it will feel colder. Satellite and radar now and a few areas of the snowshowers. There and hagerstown and frederick. No significant accumulations. We will get into the air circulating around the storm center. Long island, new york, still getting heavy. The history of the storm is too close to the coast. It brought in so much warm air we had a rain snow line farther east than we thought. Hence the snow amount lower in the area but no stop to the havoc. We will be in the low teens for most areas tonight the way it feels. Tomorrow morning it will feel like 2 in winchester. 1 below in luray. 6 at manassas. 10 downtown. It wont the day. Tomorrow night a cold one again. The wind chills by thursday morning. Very, very chilly. The next 48 hour we will see some improvement. Tomorrow is 35. Maybe a flurry or two. Gusty winds. Sunshine and 40 on thursday. Well finish up with a look at the next ten days.
