U. S. Led attacks targeting the terror group. Last year, we introduced you to dmitry. When his teenage son joined a terror group and disappeared in syria, he began the dangerous and incredible measure to bring him home. Scott has his story of the great escape. Scott if you did not go to syria to get your son, would he be alive today . No he would have paid the ultimate highpriced. Dimitri faced was an almost impossible and certainly frightening challenge for any father to save his son from a terror Training Camp inside syria. Even the lead up to the moment was baffling. Was hardly the ideal foreign fighter. Born in belgium and raised catholic, he seemed an average teen, even visiting washington, d. C. , and speaking admiring the admiringly the american dream. But he met a girl and began to change. Soon after under the lie he was going with friends to amsterdam, he soon went to syria to join islamic extremists. I was shocked of course, what do you think . We are not muslims. Scott dmitri began planning his sons rescue. I dont speak arabic. I dont have any friends or connections in the middle east. Scott the first trip with a journalist turned up nothing. On his second trip, a solo attempt, he found the Group Holding his son. They took all my close clothes. They put a cap on my head, handcuffed me, and then took me because they suspected me to be a spy. They are beating you, torturing you, questioning you, and the whole time, youre just trying to find your son. Son. It was really hard. Scott after forming a seemingly odd but necessary relationship with the group, dmitry and his son were reunited and allowed to leave. Got him out of syria and across the border and you are in safety, what is the feeling . The first moment when i know him like a, i hold small baby, like a child, you know . We were both crying. Such an emotional moment. Scott while that story alone seems like a script written for hollywood, the sequel may be even bigger. I thought i had my son back and this nightmare was over. Just started after that. Meant hope for other parents of radicalized teenagers turned g hotties turned jihadis. He was soon flooded with requests. There was something i could wish, that all these western youngsters go home where they belong. But its not only a wish. You actually go. How many times . Total, 36 times. Scott how successful are you at getting children back . I got five back scott he says there have and failures. For example, an unnamed American Family in which the sun refused to return, and reasoning with the terror group is an often upside down world of backwards logic. Then theres what dimitri calls government interference. They are advising the parents scott while dimitri boasts himself as a modernday mother theresa, he is a no longer working for free. The dangers, he says, are two great. You risk your life every time . I risk my life every time. They know when they see me why im there, what im coming to do. They know i am trying to take kids out. Scott but his calling is too loud. As he puts it, he wakes up syria. He goes to bed syria and could not stop even if he wanted to. Dmitri says his son was also held with james foley, the american journalist who was killed, and the british photographer who is still being held by isis. Ahead, republicans have cleared out of cleveland. We have reports on the ow. Are you okay . Yeah, i just got charged for my credit monitoring. Now you can go on creditkarma. Com and check it out there. Its completely free. Really . Yeah oh, that didnt hurt at all. Yeah, completely painless. Credit karma. Give yourself some credit. The Republican National convention is over in cleveland, and now the party moves toward the main event the final months of the fall and president ial campaign. Our correspondent wraps at the convention and looks ahead at the campaign. Donald trump friends, delegates, fellow americans, i humbly and gratefully accept your nomination for the presidency of the united states. It is a night just one year ago very few ever predicted donald trump officially the gop nominee and his success in many ways a product of all that tough talk. Donald trump i have a message for all of you the crime and violence that today afflicts our nation will soon and i mean very soon come to an end. We are in uncharted territory. I have come with many commissions and never seen one group so thrilled with what has just happened and another group so confused at what is going on and another group at home. Is a writermurphy for roll call and the daily beast. A really unusual convention. Republicans will either win big or lose big. Were certainly watching history. The overwhelming dealing is that history is being made. Very difficult to predict what direction it will go in. The real estate mogul was a onetime democrat was no hope of going serious, but that escalator ride to his announcement donald trump i am officially running for president of the united states. Seemed to carry over into the campaign. Unorthodox and unfiltered, he pulled in more than 13 million primary votes, more than any other republican candidate in history. Donald trump i could stand in the middle of 5th avenue and shoot somebody and i would not lose any voters. Many attribute that to truck themes. Zing on he says mexicans will pay for or advocating more guns, he politics. Ed caution disintere as them. At worst, violence like at this chicago rally and march. Criticizing trump comes at a cost, and reporters have been banned from his offense. But love him or loathe him, there was no denying he is retention. Rick perry says just because he is seen as fresh air to the fed up does not mean he is an easy sell to all. This is a Different Party now. Is that true . Im more interested in are we different from the democrat party, and the answer is you Better Believe it. When an avowed socialist is in party,t for the democrat right down to the last moments, and they changed their platform greatly to satisfy that, then these two parties are really different. Another candidate, another campaign skeptic, and doubters, much of the media all but wrote off the candidate who would come to define a modern republican party. Ronald reagan had plenty of skeptics, didnt he never but he also had a lot of experience. Hes an outsir to the washington process at the time. He was not an outsider to the concept of governing and being an executive. Even Ronald Reagan was not the kind of outsider that we are dealing with in donald trump, the First Major Party candidate who has never held office before except george washington. You have to really go back to start to understand how different this is. Many people say this is a party going through an identity crisis. Is it, or has donald trump tapped into the real identity that maybe had been ignored . What is the truth . I think donald trump understands the Republican Voters more than the Republican Leadership does, it is easy in washington to focus on your legislation, focus on your next house and senate, and you get really distracted from what is happening in the country and getting really connected to voters around the country, and donald trump is plugged right in. Donald trump to all americans tonight in all of our cities and in all of our towns, i make this promise we will make america strong again. We will make america proud again. We will make america safe again. And we will make America Great again. God bless you and good night. I love you. Theow team trump will put first half of this race in the Rearview Mirror as it pushes forward on that long road to november. Next, the spent billions of your tax dollars to put one millio green now we turn to energy and taxpayer waste. The recovery act of a socalled stimulus plan devoted more than 36 billion tax dollars to Clean Energy Ideas including electric vehicles. Last years Global Climate change summit in paris, president obama said all that money did a lot of good. I came into office. I prioritized clean energy. I said we would double our Clean Energy Production through the recovery act, so we made a big investment, and it turned out that we met our goals a lot quicker than we expected. It turns out not all the president s goals were met. Bke the vehicles on the road right 2015. A loan ofesla got nearly 500 million to help make this possible. S, the worldsl first premium allelectric sedan. The model s electric vehicle equipped with what tesla calls ludicrous mode, it can shoot from zero to 60 in 2. 8 seconds. Strong sales helped tesla pay back its government loan early. That is exactly how the Obama Administration hoped things would turn out when it announced plans to jumpstart an electric car revolution in 2011. President obama we can break our dependence on oil with biofuels and become the first country to have one million electric vehicles on the road by 2015. But success hinged on spending lots of your tax money 7. 5 billion over 10 years. Some went to sweeten the deal for consumers buying electric cars like the volkswagen for a test drive in boston. If i wanted to buy this vehicle, what kind of benefits could i get . Theres a 7,500 federal tax incentive and also, the state of massachusetts has a 25 million 25,000 tax incentive. Sharyl i could essentially get the cost of the car. The president hoped to get over one million vehicles on the road by the end of this year. Why were they so confident this could be done . I think that they hoped that the very, very large incentives would start a movement, but it did not happen. If you have a car that only gets 80 miles on a charge and takes many hours to charge that car, it ends up costing more than a regular car those get to one million electric cars, the white house relied on sales of new models. Projections turned out to be wildly optimistic. In 2010, fisk or got a taxpayer loan. Vice President Joe Biden joined a big celebration at the old plant in delaware where fisk or was supposed to start production and provide a bonanza of new jobs. Were going to make sure the middle class has their piece of the economy. Or made the announcement, everybody was excited. Director of communications in new castle county, where the plant is located. It did not turn out the way everybody wanted it to. How it did turn out was a prime example of technology not yet ready for prime time, as illustrated by the disastrous consumer pride and joy, the karma. It costs over 100,000. It is low, sleek, sensuous. It is also broken, right here in the middle of our driveway. The company blamed a faulty lithiumion battery, which only served to highlight another lesson of the. Overnments misplaced faith the builder of the battery also had gotten a taxpayer loan. Companies soon went bankrupt and were bought by the same chinese firm, and the delaware plant remained idle. It was about a year and a half, maybe two years after the announcement was made that people started asking questions like when is this going to happen . Today, it is just a 3. 2 million square foot host factory with weeds growing through the cracks in the pavement. All those jobs never materialized. The top official struggling middleclass for disappointing electric vehicle sales. It costs more money to drive an electric car. They will be more worried about having to feed their families. In the end, fisk or build a tiny fraction of the electric cars the Obama Administration counted on before going out of business. Two years after obamas announcement, six of the 11 relied upon vehicles had already stopped reduction or gone belly to meetng it impossible the goal. The goal was to put one million electric cars on the road by 2015. They met about 1 3 of that goal. There are Promising Development on the horizon. Tesla and panasonic are joining to develop a better battery and the concept remains hot, even if sales are not. It is a great no question. The problem is it definitely got ahead of itself the government got ahead of itself by giving multibillion incentives to buy cars, but the cars they were kind of coercing them into buying really were not practical. The Obama Administration declined our interview request, but a spokesperson told us the u. S. Will still be the first country in the world to have one million vehicles one million electric vehicles on the road. Still ahead, the marine corps war memorial that takes one of the most historic battles of world war ii, but there is a historical inaccuracy wwell you dont want to live with mom and dad forever, do you . Then she says. Bazang ok, good one. laughs bazang. Remember . Bazang. You get it . Bazang . Yeah uh, how do i check my credit score . Credit karma, dont worry bud its free. Ohhhh. Credit karma. Give yourself some credit. Sharyl today, we take an unusual look at one of the bestknown images of world war ii u. S. Marines planting an American Flag on the island of iwo jima after capturing key ground from the japanese. 7000 u. S. Marines died in that battle. 20,000 were wounded. Iwo jima and the memorial and blood andonies of bronze of courage and sacrifice, but odds are few have looked at the image the way one veteran has. Morgan steinbeck saw something perhaps nobody else has what he found is a testament to the power of observation. I live in pensacola florida, and i was in the army after the korean war. Thatis the actual picture the photographer shot on february 23 on iwo jima. It is iconic and central to the meaning of the marine corps. Visitors to the monument at Arlington National cemetery in virginia know the image, too. Network tv stations would go off at midnight when we were growing up and this was the last image you saw, the actual movie clip of the flag at iwo jima going up. It was very touching to be here to see that and to see that event being memorialized in the way that it has been here. Was able to get it almost identical to this photo really says a lot. I actually believe it is very accurate. Sharyl or is it . Morgan noticed something perhaps nobody else had seen. In the photo, the marine in the back has no weapon on his shoulder, but in the sculpture, he does. Morgan noticed it is a rifle that did not exist taken. Fter the photo was when i looked at these, i thought wait a minute. This is out of place and time. Cokeuld be like having a bottle in the painting of the last supper. It doesnt hit. Sharyl morgan wondered why the artist added the rifle. I did not have the answers, and i thought someone in the marine corps probably would. In thle ask simply how it got added in the statue when it was not one in the photo. It took a long time, but finally, he got an answer from the marine corps commandant. He wrote back and said to me that the artist who did the work had some artistic latitude. Sharyl it was not much of an answer, but it was the best the marines could do. The secret died with the sculptor in 2003. That is actually a very interesting fact, something i never would have pondered on. Yeah. I guess i never really looked at the picture. I just kind of trust the statue to be a complete replica of it. I never would have noticed anything like that. Sharyl most visitors will never noticed the knows, and after years of wondering, the confirmation of his observation is enough to put it to rest. Does it need to be changed . Absolutely not. It is what it is. Its reality, and there are reasons it was done that way. I can live with that. Sharyl this year marks the 50th anniversary of the day the marines took that phil and raise that flag. And bills have been raised to stop Illegal Immigrants coming to the u. S. , but what about the ones already here . Do you think the problem of Illegal Immigrants committing crimes in this country is greater than what we know . Sharyl a look at Illegal Immigrants, the crimes they are committing, and sanctuary cities next week. Thanks for watching. m Sharyl Atkisson until next time, we will be searching for stories that hold powers accountable. [captioning pe Government Matters with francis rose.
