He looks just like his mom. He does. That was an adorable scene. Lets look at the pictures again. A huge honor. The huge trademark grin from our gma colleague michael strahan. Infectious smile. Theres robin roberts. Michael one inducted into the pro football hall of fame. Really kelly ripa. Cheered on by our own robin roberts. And kelly ripa. His cohost. Well show you his moving, heart felt induction speech. Hes fantastic. The big story. The first known ebola patient in america. Dr. Kent brantly surprising everybody by walking on his own two feet when he arrived. You can see him getting out of the ambulance there. He was infected while treating ebola patients in africa. Dr. Richard besser is covering the story from Emory University hospital in atlanta. Good morning, rich. Reporter good morning, dan. Given what we heard about his condition when he was in africa, i was as surprised as anybody to see him walk out of that ambulance. It is a really positive sign. Stepping out. Dr. Kent brantley, seen here on the right, walking into this georgia hospital in a biohazard suit. He arrived on saturday, touching down here in Dobbins Air Reserve base. He stayed in a capsule like this one. He was then transported to Emory University hospital. Seen here walking in under his own power. Shocking friends and family. To see him walk, which hadnt occurred to me, was just unbelievable. Reporter brantly now getting treatment in an isolation room like this one. Seen here in the university of Nebraska Medical Center demonstration video. A lot of it is the really important sportive care. Frequent vital signs. Iv fluids if necessary. Blood transfusions if necessary. Reporter the ebola virus is only contracted by contact with contaminated body fluids. The hospital is taking precautions above and beyond what is necessary. Doctors are gowned, gloved, and masked. Family members, like his wife, amber, visiting through a glass partition. Saying shes thankful for his strength. Watching a along with the rest of america, brantleys family remaining grateful to those working to save their loved ones life. It takes a lot of worry and care about other people to put your own life at risk for people you dont know. Thats what it takes to make this world a better place. Reporter the plane that delivered dr. Brantley has left atlanta on the journey back to liberia for the other patient. No word on when shell arrive. Rich, i have to ask you. We keep hearing confidence from medical professionals about the decision to bring him back. They say its safe. Are you sure there is no overconfidence here . Couldnt something go wrong . Well, you know, i understand the fear. This is a deadly disease. But, these are two americans, they have a right to come home and receive the best care possible. And its being done safely. Its what i would want for my colleague or loved one. Its the right thing to do. Dan . Reassuring words from dr. Richard besser, who used to be in charge of the cdc. So an authoritative voice. Rich, thank you. Were going to stay on this topic. Theres clearly great concern about the pred of this virus. The cdc operates quarantine stations around the country, with people trained to spot the virus. Bazi kanaan any has more from Dulles International airport. Reporter dell gragss from the west african countries dealing with ebola are arriving here for the u. S. Africa leaders summit. The president says theyll be screened to make sure theyre healthy. Doctor with handheld thermometers and thermal imaging screeners like these. These are the efforts at the airports in west africa to try to keep ebola from catching a flight. A nonstop trip from the affected countries to more than 35 countries around the world. Folks coming from these places that have an infinitesimal risk of being exposed, were making sure were doing screening as they leave the country. Reporter on this end, more screenings. At airports in the u. S. , immigration officers are trained to look for sick passengers. Anyone with worrisome symptoms would be rushed to a room like this. The cdc has 20 quarantine stations at ports of entry around the country with Trained Medical officers on hand to assess and assist. We would work with the airlines and the Health Departments to work to identify people that are exposed. Reporter but ebola has an incubation period of 21 days. People like this come down with symptoms only after they come home, hospitals across the country are on alert. Health experts say ebola is not contagious unless a person is showing symptoms. Its not airborne. Not as easily spread as the cold or flu. The highest risk is Health Care Workers handling bodily fluids. And not to fellow passengers. Dan . And Health Care Officials say theyre ready for surprises and can handle them. Thank you, bazi. We want to move on to another major Health Threat this morning. This one in toledo, ohio. Where everybody in the entire city has been told not the drink the water. Theres a mad dash to stock up on supplies and to fix the problem. Linzie janis is in toledo. Good morning. Reporter good morning, dan. Were here at a supermarket in toledo. You can see the shelves empty where water once was. This store sold more than 40,000 bottles yesterday. This water crisis now in day two. People having to be careful once again while theyre brushing teeth and showering not to swallow the water. This morning, nearly 500,000 toledo residents are waking up for the second day not able to drink from the tap. We just need to go home. Reporter ohios governor declaring a state of emergency after routine testing friday morning showed the citys water supply was contaminated by microsystins. They can cause nervous system damage. They can trigger symptoms from vomiting to numbness. Theyre believed to be produced from this algae bloom. The National Guard delivering bottled water from across the state. Its awful. Its been horrible. Reporter as Grocery Store shelves cleared out by early morning, some residents faced price gougers, charging up to 15 for a case of water. Weve been at target since 8 00 this morning. Looking for water. There was no water on the north side of toledo. Reporter schools and restaurants closed. Unable to wash dishes or produce. This man who lives outside the affected zone paying it forward. This is all well water. We heard everyone was in trouble. We thought we would help out. Reporter overnight, city officials reassuring residents the problem will be solved. It is my hope that we dont need fema and we go back in. Im not going to give anyone a false hope. This is not going to be our new normal. Were going to fix this. Reporter scientists have been working to neutralize the toxins by adding carbons to the water. Theyve sent out new samples for testing across the state. Those results due back later today. In the meantime, this crisis prompting the city of chicago to order additional testing on its water supply. Bianna . Its unfortunate to hear about the price gouging, too. Linzie, thank you. Now to the wild weather out west. Tinderbox conditions in parts of california. Fires sweeping through parched forests. Nearby residents told the get out. The southwest deals with the flip side, flooding. Abcs brandi hitt is in los angeles with more. Good morning, brandi. Reporter good morning, bianna. Parts of the southwest are getting hit with recordbreaking rainfall. Two inches in just two hours. None of that rain is falling in the wildfire hot spots that need it most. Overnight, five states are battling extreme weather out west. California wildfires sparked by lightning causing governor jerry brown to declare a state of emergency after already issuing mandatory evacuations. And raging fires in washington and oregon continuing to tear through dry forests and brush, threatening to destroy more homes. Across the southwest, the concern is flooding. Torrential rains turning the streets in albuquerque into rushing rivers. Drivers abandoning vehicles. Some needing rescue. In phoenix, more flooding. Strong winds also wreaked havoc. Uprooting several trees in spokane, washington. Some coming dangerously close to home. Others crushing cars. In one terrifying moment, this seattle man says he was struck by lightning. Oh, wow reporter lightning struck this tree in washington starting another fire. More lightning spotted across arizona overnight. Adding to grows fears that more wildfires could soon spark. Unfortunately, hot and dry weather is expected to continue in the northwest, keeping the fire danger high. Add in the threat of more lightning, you can understand why fire crews are so nervous. Dan and bianna . Brandi, thank you. Lots of action in the american west. But this morning, there are crickets on capitol hill. Congress has left for Summer Vacation without addressing a whole host of issues. Thats friday night before they took off. They failed to cover a whole host of issues including the problem on the southern border. Why this dysfunction . Lets bring in george stephanopoulos. Why in about 7,000 words or less. I have a twopart question. Not multiple choice. The president is blaming republicans for the dysfunction. Is that fair . And is there any chance of anything getting done in the three months leading up to the midterm elections . A little bit did get done this week. They were able to pass some fix for the veterans problems and also a highway bill. But the big issue, on immigration, which ended in collapse this week. The republicans in the house, i think its fair to say, have blocked what the president and Senate Democrats and some republicans have tried to pass. This could provoke a different kind of constitutional confrontation. The president is saying hes going to act on his own to extend some kind of legal status or defer prosecution for up to 5 million undocumented immigrants in the country right now. Getting pushed hard to do that by many in the latino community. If he does that, that could help fuel the arguments of republicans who say hes gone outside his authority. One of the things the republicans passed this week was suing the president for that. The recipe for more gridlock . I think its safe to say. At least through the midterms. Thank you, george. Before i go, i want to say goodbye to bianna. Please do. You have done such a great job here. We have loved every minute having you. Well keep on watching. Im excited. I have loved working with you and learning from the master. Smartest guy in television. And hardest working. Going to miss you. See you, guys. George will go one on one with white house Senior Adviser dan pfeiffer. And now, wow, i think this is the second to last time im going to be saying this. Lets turn to ron with the headlines. Good morning, everyone. A frightening scene in a casino in arizona. Gun fire. A man with an Assault Rifle began firing outside the honda casino, about 200 miles from phoenix. The man allegedly called his mother before the shooting and said he was going to shoot people. He was shot and killed by police. And now the breaking news overseas. U. N. Officials say theres been an air strikes near a United Nations school in southern gaza. 10 people killed, 35 others injured. No word on where the rocket was fired from. Earlier, Israeli Military officials said one of its soldiers who they previously said was captured by hamas fighters, was, in fact, killed in battle. An innocent man is shot and killed in his own home by a Los Angeles County sheriffs deputy during a shootout with a gunman that police were trying to arrest. S. W. A. T. Teams were aimed to arrest the man, an armed parolee, who broke into the home of Frank Mendoza and was holding mendozas wife hostage. Mendoza ran from the house and was mistakenly shot. The armed parolee was killed, too. And a pair of boxing gloves are making a big punch. Is making a big punch, in someones wallet, that is. They were worn by muhammad ali. The gloves he wore in the fight of the century, the fight with joe frazier. There have been other fights of the century since then. Back in 1971. They were sold at auction for a whopping 400,000 bucks. Robert kennedy jr. And curb your enthusiasm star cheryl hines, my own pop news here, tied the knot on saturday at the kennedy compound. I want a compound, by the way. Hes the son of the late senator robert f. Kennedy. This is his third marriage. And foonl finally, great story here. They say cats have nine lives. This aging labrador retriever, lady, might argue that dogs do, too. After living with a succession of owners, she once walked back to her family that gave her away, 30 miles. She has found a permanent home finally with an heiress. Shes been adopted by helen rich, heiress to the wrigley gum company. Wow. Witch rich saw the dogs sad story on facebook. Unclear how a dog got on facebook. She sent her assistant and a private jet to bring lady to her home in florida. Happy ending. Shes a real lady now. Amazing. What a happy ending. Excellent. Thank you, ron. You may remember the story about the most outrageous closet in the country. Three stories high. 3,000 square feet. Filled with the many possessions of a wealthy socialite. She calls it her female man cave, which sounds like a contradiction. Now its a crime scene. Our Gloria Riviera is on the story. Welcome to my closet. Reporter a temple to house the treasures of a texas millionaire fashionista. Capturing the attention of newspapers and tv cameras. But its what teresa romer says surveillance cameras captured that has shaken her to the core. Its unexplainable. Unexplainable. Reporter the Surveillance Video shows a solo burglar entering the threestory megacloset entering the closet from the first floor. While she and her husband were having dinner at a local country club. To watch someone on film take everything out of your house that means so much to you. Reporter the couple told police that the burglar made off with a mother lode of luxury items. Diamond jewelry, rolex watches, fur, and birken bags. She spoke about her collection of bags with Melissa Rycroft a few weeks ago. When i started falling in love with these, i fell in love with this one right off the bat. Reporter the former texas beauty queen says she uses the room and her collection for charity functions. And that many of the items stolen were passed down to her. Some of that stuff youll probably never see again. Its just sad. Reporter the investigation remains ongoing. As detectives say the designer bag bandit was probably a professional, covered head to toe in a jumpsuit and gloves. Using a glass cutter to break in. Leaving no trace behind. And no trace yet of her things. It was so smooth, authorities dont think it was an inside job. Teresa says it doesnt matter how much money you have. The feeling of violation after a robbery is just awful. She says she and her husband apparently forgot to set the alarm. I bet that wont happen again. Just one time, showing the dark side of fame. So many people walking into her world. But we loved that story. Thats unfortunate. Lets hope they have insurance. Now to what we have been covering. One of the biggest moments in our gma colleague Michael Strahans life. Taking his place among footballs greatest players in the nfl hall of fame. Looki ining smooth up there always. The speech was quite moving. I predicted tears. I was wrong. The 34minute speech was upbeat. Full of memories, thank yous, and a lot of laughter. Michaelel strahan [ cheers and applause ] reporter a phenomenal player. Now officially a living legend. Our very own michael strahan. This is not tv michael. This is football michael. Reporter dubbed the best allaround defender of his generation. Joining the immortals of americas number one sport. The super bowl champ, sharing his moment with the family and coach who inspired him. Hes the most amazing, amazing man. And more so than any of that, one hell of a father. I think its no secret that tom coughlin and i did not see eye to eye. But we finally realized we both had the same goal. And that was to win. Reporter and his teammate who he learned to inspire. With you, eli, i learned, you dont have to be outwardly excited to go out there and whip some people on the football field, my friend. Reporter not shying away from the woman who will always be his mvp. Mama, you know your baby loves you. Im not ashamed to say that im a mamas boy. Reporter and revealing he was a fan of jane fonda. And her famous fitness videos. I aint lying, marcus allen. I have jane fonda tapes. I was highkicking and sidekicking. Reporter even giving a shoutout to his newest teammate. To my abc family. I want to thank them for coming out to support me. My tv wife, kelly ripa, thank you, baby. To the one and only robin roberts. Robin, thank you for coming out here to support me. I appreciate you. I love you. Reporter and from all the folks here at gma, michael, you have done us proud. Anything is absolutely possible. So its not surprising that he spent the time on the stage giving back the gratitude and entertaining everyone along the way. I love that the bust of michael shows him with the famous gaptoothed grin. They had to do that. It would have been a false one if they didnt. My favorite part is the jane fonda video. I want those tapes. I would pay for a tape of him working out. You know kelly ripa is working on that right now. Meantime, lets say good morning to meteorologist erika martin, from wtnh in new haven. Good morning. Good morning. Were going to focus on the flash flood threat for parts of the southwest. Extreme conditions there. A lot of heavy rainfall across arizona. Southern california getting a lot of rain as well. Were expecting between one to three inches locally. So we, of course, see the potential for some flooding. Keep in mind, lots of rainfall for the southwest, as well as southern california. North, were seeing, northwestern in the state here, were seeing lots of lightning and the threat of dryer conditions. Temperatures in the 90s. And low 100s. So, of course, the conditions there are really rough and dry. Tropical storm bertha staying well out to sea. Not an issue. All due to the frontal boundary i talked about yesterday. Stationa
