You tell us the price you want to pay, and we give you a range of options to choose from. Careful, though that kind of power can go to your head. That explains a lot. Yo, buddy i got this. Gimme one, gimme one, gimme one the power of the name your price tool. Only from progressive. Has oats that can help lower cholesterol . And it tastes good . Sure does wow. Its the honey, it makes it taste so. Well, would you look at the time. Whats the rush . Be happy. Be healthy. Probation officer for juveniles in manhattan. Just a guess, but it probably wont match the treadmarks on her chest. Oh, god. By my count, shes been run over at least three times. That accounts for all the abrasions. The doors ajar on the drivers side. These bruises on her front. She was standing right by the door. She heard, she turned. Wham, she didnt have time to get out of the way. Or she didnt try. Maybe she recognized the car. Or she was drunk. No, i dont smell any alcohol or food. Uh, hot peppers. Blue cheese. Buffalo wings . Well. Someone who ate buffalo wings held her hand. Her left hand, actually. Wasnt a handshake. No. It was someone who knew her well. Sure, were famous for them. Best wings south of buffalo. You see her in here last night, with somebody who ordered your famous wings . Yeah, booth 17. Back here. She was with an older guy. He got here before she did, though. Did all the eating and drinking. Did she seem anxious or nervous to you . Yeah, all of that. She didnt even take off her coat. Sounds like older guy was getting the brushoff. How did it end . She left after half an hour. He did a couple minutes after that. I guess he thought he could still change her mind. Is that what he looked like he was doing outside with her . Trying to change her mind . Well, he came back 20 minutes later, and he looked upset. Then he asked for directions to the e train and took off. If he came here by the subway, why would he need directions back to the subway . Unless he took a cab. Or drove and had car trouble. No, he would have had to have a tow. No, maybe his car trouble was that his car disappeared. Maybe he filed a report. Eames you said your car was parked across the street from bensons. Yes, as a matter of fact, i was there last night. Well, as a matter of fact, we knew that. What were you doing there . I was meeting a friend. Whats this . To daddy, love paul. Thats adorable. Your son . Yes, hes, hes very adorable. So youre married . Uh, divorced. This friend with no name is just a friend . Uh, her names ann. Ann lawson. Uh, we had a date. Very casual. I dont see what this has to do with my car. How did your paths cross in the first place . We met at, uh, a conference on juvenile delinquency. Its, uh, an interest of mine and, uh, shes a probation officer. Youre an anthropologist, arent you . Well, ive, uh, ph. D. S in anthropology and sociology. Fearsome gods. Thats a south american tribe. Wasnt this a bestseller . Ah, yes, for nonfiction. Years ago. You participated in blood rituals and warfare . laughs i didnt participate. I observed. Uh, the jukes. Another bestseller . Oh, well, it was in 1877. Uh, im getting the feeling youre really not interested in my car. No, see, were very interested. Your casual date was run over last night in a parking lot near bensons. My god, i di. Were especially interested in the fact that your car was stolen just around the time ms. Lawson was killed. And you think. Uh. Iiid better, uh. Talk to a lawyer. Make sure he has our card. Deakins the woman dumps him. He runs her over. Reports his car stolen, then ditches it. Its not much of a plan. Hes not much of a liar, either. This interest in juvenile delinquency . No, he has no background in criminology. Deakins then maybe its about her work. One of her probationers. She had 43 open cases. She hadnt violated anyone in over three months. All right, uh. The dmv record on bryces car it shows an accident three months ago. Driver was paul bryce. The adorable kid was driving . Bryce was happy to let us believe that he was still a little kid. Lets see if he has an adorable record. Hes got a sealed juvy record. He might be one of her probationers. Maybe bryce met lawson through his kid. Or maybe not. The kid isnt one of her current cases. phone rings deakins. Wait, wait, wait, wait. Which exit . Thanks. Bryces car just turned up off of whitestone expressway. Ann lawson was paul bryces probation officer for over a year. Six weeks ago, she transferred his case to another probation officer. Theres no explanation. Where are you going . To moms. Look, paul, i heard about ann. Do you want, you want to talk . Talk . i know where you were last night. You just couldnt leave her alone, could you . You just couldnt. door slams hotwired . Well, thats what they wanted it to look like. But these wires are for the wipers. wry laugh this was definitely an amateur. I mean, first, he. Reports the car stolen, then gets it washed. Then goes back to the cartheft scenario, ditches the car, and pulls the wrong wires. How tall you think Malcolm Bryce is . Sixfive, give or take. Last person to sit in this car was. Fiveten, at the most. Fiveten. What an adorable height. Olive gardens never ending pasta bowl is back. Unlimited breadsticks and salad, plus never ending combinations of pasta and sauce just 9. 99. And even unlimited meatballs, sausage or chicken for 2. 99. Its all unlimited when you go olive garden. Starts with freshlymade pasta, and 100 real cheddar cheese. But what makes Stouffers Mac n cheese best of all. That moment you enjoy it at home. Stouffers. Made with care for you or your family. I dont do any cleaning. I make dirt. Very, very heavy. Im not big enough or Strong Enough for this. There should be some way to make it easier. [ doorbell rings ] [ morty ] heres a box, babe. Open it up. Oh my goodness what is a wetjet . Some kind of a mopping device. Theres a lot of dirt on here. Morty, look at how easy it is. Its almost like dancing. [ both humming ] this is called the swiffer dance. Sabra hummus is really delicious so you might be tempted to dip more than once. Ahh. Dont be afraid, flip it around, go back in. Yup. Oooo, this is a dilemma. Oh, go ahead, were family. Oh, really . Come on youre lucky youre so cute. Sabra hummus. Dip life to the fullest. To lighten her caseload. Howd paul end up on probation . Uh, when he was 15, he stole a car with another kid. There was a firearm found in the vehicle. It was pauls first offense. He got 18 months probation. Here, this is hers. Did he get along with ms. Lawson . She never said otherwise. Theres nothing in the file. The file do you mind if i have a look . Its locked. She didnt like people poking in her things. Ann was very private. These kids, they often form attachments to their pos, isnt that right . We intervene before things get out of hand. In any event, we dont arbitrarily reassign kids. Did ms. Lawson ever talk to you about pauls mother . No. Her phone logs show only one phone call from mrs. Bryce the day before ms. Lawson had paul transferred. It was about something paul told me. He said ann was taking him to an exhibit at the whitney on a saturday. Goren it was Wishful Thinking on his part. Yes. I called ann. Apparently, she had no idea. He had a crush on her. Is that why she transferred him . She said that he would do better with a male probation officer. How did paul take it . I think he suspected that i had something to do with it, because a few days later, he moved in with his father. Uh, your, your exhusband he told us that he had an interest in juvenile delinquency. Is that because of what happened to paul . Thats how malcolm deals with personal problems. He studies them. There would have had to have been some kind of sociological force at work. Yes. By the way, do you know where your son was the night ann lawson was killed . He was at malcolms. First the good news. We found your car. Oh, good. Was there anything in it . Well get to that. And now the bad news. About your casual date with ann lawson. We were told it would have been inappropriate for her to date you. Well, she did. I met her at this bar, and we. It wasnt a date. It was about work. Your work. What are you talking about . Your study of criminal behavior among juveniles. Ann was helping you. She. Maybe she gave you sealed records. Eames you didnt want to get her in trouble, so you lied to us. That was before you found out she was killed. With all your sneaking around, its no wonder we got the wrong impression about you and ann. Anybody would. Especially someone with a juicy adolescent crush on their probation officer. Oh, i get it. Paul ran her over. With his, with his skateboard . No. With your car. You see this damage . Anns blood and hair were found in the radiator. And then theres the Rearview Mirror and the seat. Which was adjusted for someone roughly around fiveten. Paul didnt do this. I had the car, i drove it to the bar. But he knew you were meeting with her. Seeing how smitten he was over her, once he saw the two of you together, he just had to vent; he had to. He had the extra set of keys. He took your car, and wham. Paul is not a criminal. His rap sheet says otherwise. He made one mistake. Theres, theres a big difference between one bad judgment and a criminal mindset. Paul does not have the predisposition for antisocial behavior. Thats learned over years and years through generations. I went out and i got my own copy. The jukes family of new york state. The true story of a genetically linked clan of paupers, harlots, misfits and petty criminals. Its inspired a whole generation of behaviorists. Maybe it inspired you. Look, professor, maybe its just hit home now that your son was in. Paul didnt do it. I did. I did. I was in love with ann, and i begged her not to break it off, but she wouldnt listen. She walked away. She just walked away. And i killed her. He just took the rap for his kid. What a good dad. What it did is it gave us an open invitation to search his place. Make sure the warrant covers the kids room. Other than a pair of moldy shoes in the kids closet, its slim pickins. Well, this is, uh, a family tree that bryce has been putting together. It, its very rough. I mean, hes got his own shorthand. But theres, theres one name here. L. Devlin. Now, theres a devlin on the list of anns open cases. Yeah devlin, lane. This docket number its a criminal case, but. Not a delinquency file. Well, this might be why. If l. Devlin is the same person, he or she was born in 1975. One of her old probationers . Back for an encore . sighs aunt trina will be claiming her this afternoon. Dad wants the viewing tomorrow night. The last time i saw her, we fought. I shouldnt have; she didnt deserve it. Oh, now. You didnt know. Dad, he wants to know on account she was run over. Open casket . Daddy . We need to see her to say goodbye. Listen to me, cousin. Ann was a sister. Shell have pride of place, so everyone can see her. Now, youll have to use your skills on the left side of her face, but you will make her pretty. Now, you can do that, cant you, cousin . Maisel lane devlin was picked up for shoplifting. Her and her 12yearold. They tagteamed the store . It was cute. Kids up front, spilling her slurpee, making a diversion, while moms, uh, stuffing battery packs into her purse. Kids got a hell of a role model. Her moms got priors for bad checks. What we cant figure, is why her file was with a juvenile probation officer in manhattan. You mean ann lawson. Shes lane devlins aunt. Lane called her when she and the kid got popped. And she came and bailed them out . Yeah, apparently, it wasnt her first time. The little girl, whered she end up . Back with her mom. Lawson told us she was going to seek custody. Her and the mom had a real squabble about it. Lane devlins other relatives uh, you wouldnt have happened to have run across any of them . I had dealings with two of her brothers for possession of stolen property, and shes got a cousin doing time for a shortdollar scheme. I got to get back in. This clan of misfits and petty criminals professor bryce was studying was ann lawsons. A study that he was afraid to tell us about. Maybe one of these criminals isnt so petty. Lane i didnt talk all that much to her her being down in the city, busy with her job. Eames she was in law enforcement. That must have made for some tense moments at family dinners. She got along with everybody. She was all for the family. Eames the family she never mentioned to her coworkers. Why would she . What do you people want from me . Id like a glass of water. Is that okay . No, no, its okay. I can get it myself. Eames i need to run some names by you, starting with your brother evan. Hi. Youre fiona, right . Im bobby. Im sorry about your aunt annie. What are you reading . Schoolbook . Atlantic County School district. Thats south new jersey. Went to school there . Just for a semester. Bucks county, pennsylvania. Went to school there, too . Last year. Last year. Is that why your, your aunt wanted you to move in with her, cause you move around so much . Would you have liked that to live with your aunt . I wouldnt have liked living away from the family. Well, wasnt your aunt family . She didnt live with the family. She went to live outside. With them. Oh, you mean outsiders. Like me. Being an outsiders not such a hot thing. Theyre suckers. Outsiders are suckers. I cant imagine ann being killed over a custody battle. Even with her criminal record, lane had nothing to worry about from ann. Unless you factor in the familys criminal record. You see them all checking us out . Ill bet you that every one of them, either by blood or marriage, is related to the devlins. Rvs, campers, trailers. This is their winter camping ground. Come spring, theyll hit the road. Theyre travelers. [ horn honks ] kevin toaster strudel, yah . Warm, flaky, gooey toaster strudel. You know, from our 4,000 television commercials. Yep, there i am with flo. Hoohoo watch it [chuckles] anyhoo, 3 Million People switched to me last year, saving an average of 475. [sigh] it feels good to help people save. With great discounts like safe driver, multicar, and multipolicy. So call me today. Youll be glad you did. Cannonbox [splash ] [ microwave beeps ] [ music stops ] [ man ] chef dont judge. [ male announcer ] chef boyardee microwavable cups. Its your time and your chef because. [ man ] chef dont judge. Travelers. Uh, i cant say that i know that much about them. Thats how they like it very insular. They have their own language shelta. Theyre like a tribe scattered across the country in family groups maintaining a nomadic lifestyle. With the rep of being scam artists. Roof and driveway repair fraud, that sort of thing. They also do seasonal work. Anything to support life on the road. And one of them used professor bryces car to kill her over the custody of this. This little girl. Well, one thing the travelers are not known for is violence. Well, depends on how far ann would go to get custody. I mean, she was telling bryce everything. Not just names and birth dates, but, uh. Financial arrangements, their frauds, their travels, the kids neglected education. Its a powerful piece of evidence in a custody fight. Goren that might be what she intended to use it for when it was finished. But it could also link the devlins to hundreds of crimes across the country from here to missouri. If someone wanted to stop ms. Lawson from talking, can you tell who would have the authority to order such a thing . Well, this symbol here. Here it indicates a tribute being paid to a k. Devlin by other members of the family. It means he could be the alpha dog. Anns older brother kyle. Bryce likes to get up close to his subjects. I mean, he lived with this south american tribe. He would have insisted on meeting anns tribe. Kyle for a pair of cops investigating a murder all the way down in the city, youre spending a lot of time bothering the very people who loved my sister. She was a part of our family, too, mr. Devlin, her being a probation officer. If you have any ideas, like about this boyfriend of hers, Malcolm Bryce . Dont know much about him. He drove up here with ann, didnt he . He charged some gas about three weeks. Ago last saturday, right at a station about a mile from here. Yeah, ann brought him around for a cup of coffee. Seemed a decent sort. Whatd ann tell you about him . Just a guy she fancied. High school teacher. Why . You suspect him . Well, lets just say were not not suspecting him. This your truck . Its my sons. Yeah, it looks like theres a little mixup here. These packages say 50year warranty shingles. Yeah. They look a little thin to me. Thats, thats he using a new amalgam. More like 20 years. Thats a spun glass core and the like. And the like . This roofing tar . Huh, is that new, too . cause, i dont know, feels like crankcase oil. Ill mention that to my son. Goren hey, you know, its kind of odd that, uh, you called bryce a high school teacher. Thats what he said he was. Really . cause hes a college professor. Teaches anthropology. Goren they study social groups, tribes, clans. Even extended families. How tall are you . Whats that to you . Dont make us look it up on your drivers license. Fiveeleven. Youre all legs. Thats why he sits so low in the seat. You dont mind, do you, getting out of my truck . You know, it might interest you to know that Malcolm Bryce wrote a book a few years ago. About a tribe of fierce warriors. Hes writing a new book about a new tribe. Yeah . Its no matter to me. He started drawing a family tree. It looks like a clan of modern day nomads. You know, itinerant tradesmen. Roofers, and the like. This isnt your tribe, is it, here, you think . You know, cause, look, it says, kd. Thatd be you. And then pd, ed that must be your sons. Then theres these little squiggles next to the names. You know, i think thats bryces shorthand for criminal records. Eames professor bryce was putting you and your kin under the microscop
