WKYC Our World With Black Enterprise August 14, 2016

Pioneers for their exceptional contribution towards diversifying the Tech Industry. I think the value represents the future, not only for america, or for black people, for the world. Its very, very rewarding in that i really do feel like i can help to mentor people who are coming along. People of color, especially. And women. I started my role at hp among a group of doing software, hardware, peripherals. And finally, we shine a spotlight on the next generation of tech stars, in our slice of life. We serve 16 to 24yearolds in lowincome communities, were headquartered in the bronx, we mostly serve bronx youth and mostly some are coming from colleges, or theyre in school, juniors and seniors, thinking about their next step after our world, up . . . . . . Only those who dare drive the world forward. . . . . Welcome back to our world black enterprise. Sacramento, california ranks among the top tech cities in the united states. And its first africanamerican mayor and former nba threetime allstar Kevin Johnson played a role in its transformation, he talked about it with o earl butch graves junior. Take a look. You were extraordinary, not just because as a basketball player, but you began to think about what life after sports was going to be. While were you playing. Talk to us about why you even, you launched saint hope while were you still playing with the sun. My story is similar probably to a lot of young people in the audience today. I grew up in sacramento. But a poor part of sacramento. And in my neighborhood you had gang activities, all the things that weve all experienced. And i was always told that nothing good came out of the part of sacramento i grew up in. It was called oak park, thats my community. Nothing good comes out of oak park and that used to drive me crazy. My mom had me at 16 years old. My father died when i was three years old. So single parent, no dad. My grandparents stepped in and helped raise me. My grandfather was a sheet worker. When i graduate from high school, i go to college, it looks like im going to get drafted to the nba. He said you got to come up with your exit strategy. I said what does that mean. He said you have to think about before you get to the nba, what do you want to do when youre done . He got me to think about what my exit strategy was, what i was going to do after sports. And the vision is to revitalize inner city communities through public education, economic development, civic leadership my rookie season, im back in sacramento, and none of my friends that i grew up with went to college. They were on drugs, in jail, or dead. And then after a couple of years im back in sacramento during the offseason, and im seeing my friends are now having kids. And those kids are going to repeat the same cycle. And i said, i got to try to do something to disrupt that cycle. I got to try to do something that of young kids who look like me in poor neighborhoods. What stirred you to say you know what, im going to run for mayor in sacramento, where i grew up in 2008. I wish i had a really cool fancy reason for why i ran for mayor. But when i retired in 2000 from phoenix, i moved back to sacramento. And sacramento is the capital of california. Sacramento was going to lose its nba franchise. Which is such a backbone of almost any city. If an nfl franchise, nba franchise walks out of your city, what theyre basically telling you is leave the keys, because theres nothing left. Take us through that timeframe. That must have been a harrowing timeframe. Was it close to the election time . Or just post the election time . The saga started in 2011 and got resolved in 2014. So it was like a fouryear kind of saga. We prevailed, thank goodness. We started a campaign called here we stay. And our fans just went crazy and they raised money and they wrote the nba and they wrote the board of governors and everybody who made decisions. It wouldnt have been cool for the mayor of sacramento who played in the nba to lose the nba team on his watch. That wouldnt have helped my political career. Im going to move this conversation towards technology now. And you started initiative to cities 1. 0, cities 2. 0, and now theres initiative on cities 3. 0. Talk about what the role of cities is now. I started talking about a new era of american cities. And that new era is called 3. Or cities 3. 0. What is 1. 0 . A 1. 0 city is whencies were built around ports and cities and freight rail. Kind of the agricultural revolution. A 2. 0era were built kind of this industrial revolution. A 3. 0 era is where we are today, thats where cities have to be a hub of innovation, of entrepreneurship, and technology. Cities are paperless, theyre cashless, and theyre wireless. Thats a new era of a 3. 0 city. Thats what were doing in sacramento. At some point youre not going to be mayor for life. At some point youre going to want to go to do something else. My term is up in november 2016. Got to get into space. Wealth creation, we need more of us in this space station for wealth creation. We need our young people to know that theyre going to get it here. Theyre going to get folks that have capital that are going to invest that we have board seats that are diverse, which is something you push. You have all of these Great Companies in Silicon Valley and they lack diversity. And thats been exposed and we have to do something about it. And ive been lot of areas. But until we can become successful like you and many others in this space, i dont feel like im doing my part. Ladies and gentlemen, please join me in thanking mayor Kevin Johnson. We appreciate your time. [ applause ] thank you, bill. After the break, we honor three individuals who blazed a trail in Silicon Valley. Stay with us. Folding the laundry can you . No. Cleaning the windows well, the living rooms a disaster you should see the bathroom vo most Insurance Companies give you every reason to avoid them. Im looking for my keys plants need planting well the leaves arent going to rake themselves vo nationwide is different. Hon, did you call nationwide to check on our claim . vo we put members first. Actually, they called me. Gold bond . Powder spray with a manly scent. New gold bond . Mens powder spray controls odor, wetness. Smells irresistible. Stay cool. Welcome back. The first black enterprise tech and summit trailblazers award, recognize three pioneers in the tech space. Two are Silicon Valley power couple ken and Theresa Coleman who used their position to open the doors for other africanamericans. Heres more, theyre known as one the of the top couples in Silicon Valley. Ken and theresa coal man have been innovating in the Tech Industry for the last 40 years. She in hewlettpackard, Software Publishing kormgs and now chairman of dignity health. He with hewlettpackard, activision, Silicon Graphics and now chair of smpbl oma technologies. I was a captain in the air force and i decided to resign my civilian life. Roy clay had been an employee and executive at hp. So roy gave hp my resum . I was called in for the interview, and that entered my started my life in technology. His life with caretha also began at hp. He always said he was going to ask me for lunch. But he never would. And the last time he played that game, and said we lunch sometime, i was ready with my calendar. We had our first date and the rest is history. The colemans are seen by many people as mentors and role models in all their endeavors. I think ken and kreetha have not only made lasting krigss to the Tech Industry in terms of real business outcomes, but to me theyve also made lasting contributions in terms of the idea of diversity and inclusion in Silicon Valley. Ken has been you know a hes been a pioneer in developing mentorship. And importantly, think hes been a pioneer in developing a strong and growing culture of minorities in teck comincogy. But even with their efforts to create opportunities for minorities, they note that Industry Diversity is still a problem. I dont think we have enough senior consecutives, enough people on board. But we sure are way more than we had four decades ago when i ed im very hopeful. I think the valley represents the future, not only for america, or for black people, for the world. They truly are a couple that cares about making sure that the leadership and employees in the tech field represents the diversity not only of california, but the diversity of are of great importance in life, where we pretty much see the world the same way. When i think of kreetha and her leadership style. The first word that comes to mind is authentic. Highly trustworthy. Wise. Courageous. And with the unique ability to marry the purpose of the organization with the purpose of the world at large. Ken colemans impact in the tech world has been monumental in many ways. Having been not only a driving force of many of the household names at Silicon Valley. But he has also helped those companies in turn spawn others. For the colemans, taking companies and colleague does the next level in tech is as much a matter of changing attitudes as it is achieving innovation. Its very, very rewarding. In that i really do feel likeky help to mentor people who are coming along. Important to me. I think that the world right now needs more human kindness in it. I want to be a role model, especially for young africanamericans. Especially for young males. You can achieve if you believe. If you work hard. And you challenge the status quo. In ken and kreetha coleman werent the only recipient is. . . . . . . Only those who dare drive the world forward. Mary buys a little lamb. One of millions of orders on this companys servers. Accessible by thousands of suppliers and employees globally. But with Cyber Threats on the rise, marys data could be under attack. With the help of at t, and security that senses and mitigates Cyber Threats, their Critical Data is safer than ever. Giving them the agility to be roy clay senior is the first africanamerican to start a tech company in Silicon Valley. His extraordinary career spans more than half a century. Roy clay senior is also a black this is his inspiring story. Hes known as the godfather of Silicon Valley. The first africanamerican to work with the areas first computer company. Roy clay senior was drawn to the developing Tech Industry, but at the start the industry was anything but welcoming. When i graduated from university in 1951, i sought a job at mcdonalds. Invited me for an interview. After seeing my resum . And when i got there, they didnt know i was black. And they were very polite. They said, were sorry, but we have no job for professional negroes. But clay would not be denied. Within the year he was working for the company. In the following decade, he would make his move to the computer firm that gave birth to Silicon Valley, hewlettpackard. I started my role at hp among out of that group would come the first mini computer, a device that would lead the way to the tablets and smart phones we have today. My contributions to developing technology is twofold. My hands on was to design computer software. To make the computer more userfriendly. I then worked with sta staff and Computer Science gro the first graduates of Computer Science. Clay would become an adviser to a Venture Capital firm that would fun the likes of tandem computers, compaq and intel. His focus was to find top talent. I had the opportunity to meet roy clay when he took my resum . And introduced me to hp. He was a very supportive and wise person. Ken coleman would follow in hp. As clay moved on to make new inroads. In addition to being the first black executive on hp, on the first black man on the city council of palo alto, he also was the first black technical founder in the valley. He founded rydell electronics. Not only did roy start rydell electronics, but he made certain that to the extent possible there were other otu opportunities for other africanamericans. Harry bremen goes way back with roy clay. Hes known him for 40 years. Hes seen his friend inducted into the Silicon Valley Engineering Hall of fame and excel as inventor, entrepreneur and mentor. I think roys legacy as he goes on will be one of service. And guidance, leadership. Africanamerican community have gone. And not allowing artificial obstacles to hold you back. I think roy is a great mentor to any member of young and old people in technology in Silicon Valley. Across all industries, not Just Technology industry. And hes viewed as an icon by all of us. After the break, we highlight a program that recruits tech at a young age. Stay with us. In a world held back by compromise, businesses need the agility to do one thing another. Only at t has the network, people, and partners to help companies be. Local global. Open secure. If you cant shut down at bedtime. Youre not alone. Get nonhabit forming unisom to fall asleep fast. Smells irresistible. Welcome back to our world black enterprise. Theres an innovative prak in the bronx, new york, introducing young people to a career in technology and entrepreneurship. Its called the knowledge house and its our slice of life. The knowledge house is a nonprofit social enterprise, with a mission of building an educationtojobs pipeline in lowincome communities. Theres a huge amount of opportunity in the Tech Industry. 2020. About 30 of those are going to be filled with the talent that exists right now. And only about 50 of those jobs require any type of secondary degree. So theres huge opportunity for people to get into the industry and make a real good living. The fact that learning how to code for example, is free online, makes it really accessible for our children. And then also theyre on Technology Every day. I joined the knowledge hub help students within my borough. How to help their access to jobs and using technology to do that. The community is rich with talent. Its always rich with talent. The only difference is theyre used to being consumers versus producers. Its changing that mindset, so the talent to foster so they can get certain jobs accumulating within the tech sector. The students come here ready to work. They love everyone likes being on websites, applications. So our program not only has gone through our programs, the students, and lenard how to build a website. They have their own video games in the play store which is great. The reason that we started this program or how the program came to be, with jeralyns background in education and my background in entrepreneurship and technology, we started shooting ideas back and forth and realized that theres a huge and the technology and apply it to alternative education process. To empower people in our communities to either break into the industry, as an employee, or start their own tech startup. We serve 1624yearolds in lowincome communities. Were headquartered in the bronx. We mostly serve bronx youth. And most of them are coming from junior colleges or theyre in school, juniors and seniors thinking about their next step. Ive been sort of growing as a create my own business to be sort of an entrepreneur. And this has given me like the great tools to complete that. Currently, most of our traction in terms of partnerships have come through just word of mouth. But really it was just us going out, finding cbos and education at institutions we could run our program out of and working with them to deliver the program. Thats helped us expand to a number of different locations throughout the city. Weve been very lean in terms but i think our grassroots approach has really helped a lot of people want to bring the knowledge house to them. Unfortunately because of our lack of capacity, we cant serve everyone. So we would really like to become sustainable to the point where we can serve about 1,000 students each year. And that does it for this edition of our world black enterprise. Be sure to visit us on the web at black enterprise ourwod. Me on twitter. Me on twitter.
