Trying to drum up support leading up to this saturdays primary. All hoping to win all important delegates. Because delegates are what win you the nomination. 3 it all starts with the word delegates. You see each state is alloted delegates both republican and democrat. Delegates are usually party activists, Party Leaders or early supporters of a candidate. Come primary or caucus day, depending on your state, after the popular vote is tallied. The delgates are divide up between the candidates. Then. Those delegates go on to the National Convention and vote for your candidate on your behalf. Heres where it gets weird. Democrats and republicans do it differently. This year a republican candidate will need 1,237 out of 2,472 delegates to secure the partys nomination. Trump is ahead with 17 delegates after iowa and New Hampshire. But the Democratic Candidates will need 2,382 out of 4,763 delegates to become the party nominee. So youre probably thinking Bernie Sanders is ahead after his landslide victory in New Hampshire and the tie in iowa. Not so. Check it out. Hilary clinton is crushing the delegate game. Excuse me . Yeah, so this is the part where it gets complex. Democrats have something called a super delegate. Those fancy delegates are not bound by the popular vote. They can vote for whichever candidate they want. Lets show you New Hampshire to explain. Bernie sanders crushed it with 60 to clintons 38. New hampshire has 24 democratic delegates. Sanders got 15 based on the popular vote and clinton racked up 9. But New Hampshire also has 8 super delegates. Six of whom have already pledged their support to clinton. Bumping her number to 15. So New Hampshire is basically a tie. If youre still keeping countthe other two super delegates havent announced who they will support yet. But so many super delegates in states that havent even voted yet have come out backing hillary clinton. That it makes it virtually impossible for sanders to lock up the nomination even if he keeps grabbing the popular vote. But again. Those fancy delegates 3 in South Carolina there are 50 delegates for the Republican Party and 59 for the democratic party. 3 those delegates will be chosen after the republican and democratic primaries, which are february 20th and 27th. While we dont know who all of those delegates will be, we do know at least two that will be casting their vote. We spoke with the chairman of the state Republican Party, matt moore. As well as don fowler, the former chairman of the Democratic National committee. In a skype interview. Moore says they are looking forward to this important weekend. 3 weve had a statewide primary years that has very much determined the future of our party. We believe our party is the party that can reverse the policies from the last seven years and get the country working and back on track again. So were all excited. The state chairman and the National Committee members in rock hill are e also automatic delegates, but we are bound to the winners of the primary, just like all of the other delegates in South Carolina. We are a party that believes in the power of the voters to make that choice and not in the power of super delegates. 3 fowler says the democrats have had super delegates since the 1980s after years of being divided amongst the party. 3 the notion of super delegates came up specifically in light of what we went through in the 60 so thatatf we as a party every got so unorornized, faction ridden or disagreeable, that there would be some adults there to say ok just take it easy, well work this out. That was the rational for the super delegates. It was never ever to give some special privilege to a small group of people to throw the nomination one way 3 3 be sure to follow us on air, through social media and online at wltx dot com for updates as we continue into this primary and election season. 3 3 heres a look at some event happening in the midlands today. But this is more than just an eyesore, it could lead to more flooding. News 19 daniel bonds explains. 3 cars going bypiles of debris from the october flood still litters parts of gills creek near devine street and rosewood drive. The floods introduced a tremendous amount of material to the streams in this area. Dr. Allen james is a professor of geography at usc he says there is a lot of concern about Water Quality issues after the flood, but he is also worried about another post flood danger. There should be a big concern over the trees and debris and sediment that has been deposited in these streams, and the implications that has to future flooding. James says even though the 2015 flood was a rare event, there is always a chance for another one. Its like rolling the dice, the probabilities dont change. He warns with the amount of debris in the waterways, it may not take as much water to produce even more flooding. We dont need a 1000year flood to have severe flood damage, we could simply have a fairly large rainfall event, something on the order of a 20year rainfall, and that could cause much higher water than it has in the past. James says in some cases, it is obvious debris needs to be removed, when it is near bridges and residential areas clearlrl other cases need to be studied closer. Somebody experienced in recognizing roughness and hydraulics of local channel flow, could ascertain whether if this particular reach of channel needs to be snagged, but that sort of reconnaissance needs to be done. James says urban streams are sometimes overlooked, he hopes that will change. These streams are potential assets to a community, they can be made beautiful, to green spaces, walkways, and transportation corridors, but they certainly should not be a liability. In 3 3 the city of columbia says it is aware of this debris issue, and due to the heavy equipment needed to move it, it has reached out to the army corps of engineers to help fix the problems. 3 storm warning the tool that could save your life.
