The cdc presented South Carolina Birth Defects Prevention Program with a grant and they followed 1100 families with a birth defect and they found that folic prevents these birth defects. Folic acid works in the developmental system. Were not sure how but it takes 3 months, to get into a habit of getting to do something new and then it is in the pathway of the reproductive system. And what happens is when conception happens and the cells divide, our bodies start out as a flat plate and then about day 18, our bodies fold into a tube. And now, as it folds up, it starts to close along the spine area. And where it doesnt close, it is where we get these defects. Like i said, you know, by the time at 28 days, its when everything is closed, so the baby is the size of a coin and mom dont know shes pregnant and defect have happened and they cant be undone. Well adele dixon joins us to you know firsthand the benefits of taking folic acid. Thanks for having me. Tell me about your son and about your daughter. My son barry was born with a neural tube defect when he was born we were told that he may not have any functionality within the first 5 years of life. He had brain surgery at 2 weeks old and i took prenatal vitamins and we did the genetic study and she said, my body didnt take in enough folic acid and they provided us with vitamins so i took four times the amount and they provide that, so we participated in that and we have a healthy 7 week old named baylor. Talk about the difference in did you know when you were pregnant that he would have this birth defect . No, we didnt know, we didnt know that we were going to have a birth defect. The day that he was born, after he was delivered, the doctor just kept looking at his head and rubbing it and we knew something wasnt wrong and they started running tests and its where the skull doesnt fuse together so the brain tissue grows on the outside. Its shocking. It had to be incredibly scary to hear when your baby was born that he may have developmental delays up to 5 yearsold. But hes a healthy 8yearold now. And i know, come on out barry. We hear your baby sister is crying, the interesting thing and you can give the baby to mommy. Talking to jane, was that she said, you have to have this folic in your diet prior to giving birth. To becoming pregnant. With this pregnancy, i took the prescription folic acid for 6 months before we tried to have a baby. So for 9 months told i had it and i had four times the normal amount to prevent the birth defect. Its a powerful vitamin. I want everyone to walk away with, this is the one thing that can be prevented by taking folic acid and the numbers have increased so if youre of an age, you need it in your diet.
