Next he sniffs out the drugs near the steering wheel, again sitting down to alert his handler that contraband is right here. The more dogs we have, the more areas we could search, the more stuff we could find. It makes it safer for the officers and the inmates also. Reporter corrections commissioner has made the rikers canine unit a major plank to stem the tide of contraband behind bars. Hes already added nine dogs bringing the current number of canines to 22. He plans to add 13 more. There are dogs dedicated to finding banned items bought in by the corrections staff.
