Theres about 2,000 to 3,000 varieties of pears. One thing about pears, though, is you cannot allow a pear to ripen on the tree and eat it. Because if you did, what would happen is there would be these grit cells inside. Peaches, plums, nectarines, anything you take off of a tree when its ripe, its terrific. Pears cannot. Pears have to be picked green. So like i said theres over 2,000 varieties of pears. So what i like to do with pears is, instead of getting them home and putting them right in the refrigerator because they are picked green, during the holidays you take a little basket, take a napkin and you just put it down and leave it on the counter. And what happens . The pears ripen. When do you know its good to eat . The first pear were going to this is probably the best pear you ever wanted to eat. Nobody buys them for run reason. Because the pear is not really that good looking. Its squatty. Youre going to see see the bottom of this . See the markings and everything . What happens with that is people pass them by. But people that know these pears, its the best eating pear. You want to let the pear sit out for a little while. Its real simple. By the stem end you push with gentle pressure. These are a little hard. What happens with these pears is because they have maturity in them, you leave them out two or three days on the counter they get nice. Some people like the pear hard like a rock when they eat it. The next pear is a red anju pear. The aim thing same thing holds true with these pears. Bring home, leave it on the counter, do not refrigerate it. Or if you want to join the holidays like this, you add them in a little basket like i said. Its something instead of putting flowers out, we put this out and then the pears are out there, they ripen and theyre really good. You want to look for a shiny pear. You want to make sure the pear has the stem on it and has a little softness in it. The top is the most important thing. If its got a little give at the top thats the most important thing. Are you going to cut something . I like to use this little gadget. What i did is i like to cut you push it right down and open them up. They look a little more festive. Theyre good, theyre out there, theyre available. Just remember that pears cannot be ripened on the tree.
