Reporter she fought the fine but lost. The argument was a faulty metro card was not an excuse and the bus driver had no authority to tell me to get on the bus and ride it. Reporter she researched the mtas website and found these frequently asked questions. What do i do if i cant get a receipt . The answer was board the bus, tell the bus driver. Reporter so sharon asked for an appeals hearing which she again lost. She paid the 100 fine, but then took her complaint to news 4. We asked the mta to investigate what customers should do if the sbs fare collection machine is out of service. The answer . They can board the bus, but they cant stay on. They need to ride to the next stop to get a ticket. Im not guilty of fare evasion. In my opinion, the bus driver was the mta employee, he was the only one on the bus. I did what he told me to do. Reporter a Media Liaison looked into sharons case and they say the fare collection devices on 3rd avenue and 34th street were working on the day sharon tried to use them. They also reviewed her metro card transaction history and they say the card wasnt used that day. They also pointed out that Bus Operators have no authority to tell customers to board without a receipt. So, sharons fine stands, but they will give her back the 5 fee for an audio recording of her appeal which she had requested but never received. In the newsroom, lynda baquero, news 4 new york. Oh. Angela davis is a patient herself and she knows the impact this has on her life. People like her. Reporter this scenario is routine for nearly 500,000 americans undergoing regular dialysis treatments to clean their blood of toxins. Machines doing the work their kidneys can no longer do. Many of them talk about loneliness, sadness. Many of them are depressed. Older generation who are very set in their ways and used to doing things. Its often difficult for them. They suffer from a lot of isolation. Reporter angela davis has been a dialysis patient since 2008 when her kidneys suddenly failed. My whole life suddenly changed once i started dialysis. It was a blessing. It taught me so many things about myself starting with the ability to fight. Reporter and not just for herself but for other patients undergoing what is a grueling and debilitating treatment. Three years ago angela founded the nonprofit for kidneys sake to enhance the lives of dialysis patients and help them live fuller lives. I have Kidney Disease, but Kidney Disease does not have me. My life does not stop because i have Kidney Disease and because im on dialysis. It just changes. Reporter with the help of corporate sponsors, shes taken patients on trips, even hosted a zumba party. They felt so exhilarated, many of them said i cant believe i did that what they mainly learned is they dont have to stop and they can do. And that bag around other people and being social makes a world of difference in your life. Emotional state, everything improves. It just gives people more hope. You know, again to go on and do what you need to do. Reporter life doesnt stop. No t does not stop. Reporter theres a Community Education component. Board member dawn loudry spent seven years on dialysis before getting a transplant. I wanted to be an inspiration. I wanted to show you can do it. You can get three it where three days a week for four hours at a time, angela comes here to the Dialysis Center for treatment. But its the work she does outside of here that prompted administrators to nominate her for the American Kidney Funds hero of hope award. Astonished, amazed, humbled. Reporter the Fund President said she inspires others by giving back despite the challenges of living with kidney failure and lang says shes not fin angela says shes not finished. Were coming to a town near you. Thats my goal. She will get there. I have no question. Angela is on her way to washington at the end of the month. The American Kidney Fund is honoring her as the hero of hope for the year. Its a big gala. What the American Kidney Fund, gus, they literally provide Financial Support for people going through dialysis so they can continue treatment, help with insurance premiums. Excite an organization. Traditional catholics, typically older, are often at odds with the pope with his progressive views. But those views get the attention of younger catholics. The day pope francis was elected as the new pope was one of the happiest days of my life. Reporter his young life. Hes only starting high school but hes quite comfortable with his catholic faith. I deeply admire pope francis. It made me emotional to think about how special this was. Reporter most catholics his favorable rating among all catholics is a strong 71 . Thats down from 89 last year. In that time among conservative catholics, the drop was deep, from 72 to 45 . The generational thing happens every day. And there are people that are going to be angry and people not going to be happy or theyre going to disagree. Reporter this man knew pope francis. They worked together at the cathedral in buenos aires. So he wasnt surprised to hear what pope had to say on gay marriage nor that it caught his sons attention. When he said who am i to judge that brought attention to everyone, especially the teenagers who are sometimes confused and ask difficult questions and to know what direction to take.
