WNBC Sunday Today In New York November 22, 2015

Its sticking around in some places. Raphael miranda gets us started with that this morning. Good morning. Not a great weekend shaping up across long island. At least your sunday. The rain continues to fall there. You can see in our weather headlines, light rain lingers to the east of town, also to the south later on today. For the rest of us, its dry and breezy through the afternoon. We have a cold monday coming. Get ready for a big change in terms of those temperatures. Its mild outside right now. We have some sunshine for you in the Hudson Valley. A mix of sunshine and clouds closer to the city. The rain has moved back across eastern long island. Now tracking showers in places like montauk and the hamptons. As youre planning your day, 51 degrees outside right now. Low 50s throughout the day. Some sunshine, yes, but some showers may get close to the city. That shower threat lingers into the evening hours as well. It turns breezy, especially later on today. Temperatures begin to drop through the 40s, 30s. Were talking about windchills in the 20s by tomorrow morning. Well take a look at all those chilly details coming up. Over to you. 20s, oh. New york First Responders just wrapped up an active Shooter Drill on the loufr wer east side. The drill was planned before the terror paris attacks but were ramped up afterwards. Reporter we just heard from the mayor, the Police Commissioner, and Homeland Security secretary jeh johnson, who says there is no specific threat here, that this was a drill that was planned more than a year ago. This was an active shooter situation here. It was an exercise that was carried out this morning inside of a closed subway station here on the lower east side. You can see fake victims, theyre bleeding on stretchers. The nypd there with weapons that were not real. This exercise here, a coordinated effort between all of the citys Emergency Responders to neutralize the shooters as quick as possible if this was a reallife situation. While this was planned before the terror attacks in paris, there was a new scenario here. This one including a shooter with a suicide vest. Homeland security secretary jeh johnson saying one of the big concerns now is a copy cat attack. We know of no specific credible threat of a parislike attack directed against the u. S. Homeland. We are and we continue to be and have been concerned about copycatlike attacks. One of a series of drills that are regularly undertaken by our First Responders to ensure that they are ready and are constantly using the best and reporter and commissioner bratton saying the two drills successful. He says they plan to go back now and analyze what happened here and share their findings with cities around the country. Pat and gus, back to you. Lori bordonaro on the lower thank you. No explosives were found aboard a Turkish Airline flight out of jfk that had to be diverted to canada. The flight carrying 256 people was en route to turkey. Authorities got information about the threat around 11 00 after the plane was already in the air. It landed safely in nova scotia. Nobody was hurt. This is videofrom inside the plane as authorities had to evacuate the passengers. Then canadian investigators searched the plane with trained dogs. No explosives were found, but the threat remains under investigation. That flight is now back on track, headed to istanbul. Authorities and airlines have been on alert since the terror attacks in paris and that crash of a russian metro jet passenger plane in egypt. The terror group isis has claimed responsibility for both of those attacks. This morning, authorities are investigating new threats from isis. The militant group has released a propaganda video threatening new attacks on france and other targets. Meanwhile, three men with alleged links to isis remain behind bars in turkey. Police believe one of them scouted the locations of the paris massacres. French president Francois Hollande will meet tomorrow with david cameron. The two will travel to washington on tuesday where the two leaders will meet with president obama to discuss plans to fight isis. This morning, only police are on the streets of brussels as that city is under its highest threat following that morning of a parisstyle attack. The Prime Minister has urged people to avoid gathering in large numbers, and mass transit is shut down until at least this afternoon. President obama is heading back to our Nations Capital after a summit in malaysian. At a press conference there, obama defended his strategy to combat isis and said the u. S. And its allies will not relent in the fight against that terror group. He said the world wont accept the attacks on civilians in places like paris as the new normal. Nypd Police Commissioner bill bratton helped organize that active Shooter Drill we mentioned at the top of the newscast. Hell also be part of a panel on meet the press. Chuck todd is live in washington with a preview. Good morning, chuck. Good morning, gus. Busy show. Absolutely. In terms of the president , who is talking about this whole strategy, hes also spending a lot of time dealing with political flak here at home. Is that kind of keeping him away from dealing with actual strategy . Well, look, i think you could make that argument that maybe hes allowing himself to maybe hes reading too much criticism from the president ial trail, a little too focused on that. I noticed a change in tone from how he handled things this morning versus when he first started talking overseas about a week ago. So i think he realizes that there is an anxiety here at home that he needs to sort of channel and speak to. So i do think he got the message, and thats why it was a little different. This has been look, ill be perfectly blunt. If this week is an example of how american Political Leadership will respond to a terrorist attack in paris, im very concerned about how our american political system will handle an attack here. We seem to be more divided than ever. I dont know well respond as well as we did politically post9 11. In terms of political response of the refugee crisis, we saw a lot of movement on that this week, including that vote in congress. We did. And in fact, im going to show that actually maybe congress, if theyre concerned about this, they may have misplaced their priority. If youre worried about isis operatives getting in here, our bigger security gap is on our Visa Waiver Program and frankly how easy it is to get a student visa or work visa or tourist visa. A little reminder here, all the 9 11 hijackers were in this country on some form of a visa. The refugee process is actually the hardest way to get into this country. Getting in, in other ways, there are plenty of security gaps. Youre going to hear the secretary of Homeland Security taonlk about that specific issue, and we have our own math to show you. We interview exhibitioner bratton an awful lot. When you interview him on a national stage, what are you looking for from him in terms of his role as part of the National Scene . Well, i think when you see when it comes to sort of who leads by example, the most force is new york citys. It is a target. Washington, d. C. , is a target. You know that. When those Police Commissioners speak, the methods they implement, the ones that work, theyre going to be all of the sudden implemented in every other major city around the country. I think the fact of the matter is bill bratton is at the tip of the spear. Down here in washington, d. C. , we have a our Police Commissioner, theyre at the tips of the spear on this stuff because theyre dealing in local Law Enforcement and international terrorism. It is a concern that is on the front lines in a way that its not in other cities. So what bill bratton says resonates with every Police Commissioner in this country. Okay, chuck. As you said, a busy morning. See you in a little bit. Thank you for the preview. You got it, gus. Stick around for meet the press with chuck todd at 10 30.
