On sunday, divers recovered a handgun that they say is consistent with the weapon used to kill the officer during a foot chase in east harlem last week. It was under about 20 feet of water, and Authorities Say the nypds scuba team searched for it on their stomachs and really recovered it by hand. A whale watching tour boat capsized with more than two dozen people on board. It happened off the coast of tofino in british columbia. Kerry barrett is monitoring the situation from the newsroom. Darlene, we know at least five people are dead, one person is still missing. There were 18 people taken to the hospital. We know some of them have been released. Still hospitalized. Exactly how many and what their conditions are, canadian authorities havent said just yet. As we take a look at some of the new video just into the newsroom a couple minutes ago, this is video of that boat actually sinking. As you mentioned, a whale watching tour boat sank off vancouver. We understand the coast guard searched through the night for that person that is still missing. So far, though, no luck. Meanwhile, several rescue vehicles were sent to the pier after the boat sent out a distress signal. That was at about 8 00 p. M. Eastern yesterday. The Canadian Military sent in a helicopter and plane to search for passengers and crew. The witnesses there say about 15 to 20 local fishermen joined in that rescue effort as well. They also say that the boat was in an area of this sound that can get pretty rough, but as you take a look at this video, it wasnt rough yesterday. In fact, they say it was very quiet. The company that operates the whale watching boat issued this statement on their website. It has been a tragic day. Our entire team is heartbroken over this incident, and our hearts go out to the families, friends, and loved ones of everybody involved. They also said theyre fully cooperating with the investigation into what happened. It is worth noting, however, that this same Whale Watching Company had another fatal accident back in 1998. After shooting the 29yearold victim, the police also shot in the direction of the second victim, but bullets missed him. The victim who was shot was transported to a hospital. He was shot in the stomach, also in the leg. Police describe the suspects as 19 to 25 years old, and they were both wearing hoodies at the time of the attempted robbery and shooting. Back to you. Police say the suspects also shot in the direction of a second victim, a man the first victim was with, but bullets missed him. The victim who was shot was transported to the hospital. He was hit in the stomach and the leg. Police describe the suspects as 19 to 25 years old, both of them wearing hoodies at the time of the attempted robbery. And we will have more weather and traffic coming up. Now we want to get to that breaking news out of afghanistan, where a massive earthquake has shook the region. We want to get to Kerry Barrett<\/a> with what we know. Impacting several different countries. It is. In fact, were getting a look at the first pictures. First, updated information about where this hit specifically. It was a 7. 7magnitude quake that hit about an hour ago. President usgs says the epicenter was in northern afghanistan. Very mountainous. It was felt all across south asia, including islamabad, pakistan. In fact, those first pictures are out of new delhi. You dont see a lot of damage, but you can see throngs of people who have run out of the buildings and are waiting people say the walls were swaying back and forth. People were running out of these buildings in sheer panic. Also, there was an nbc producer in kabul who felt the earthquake and just reported to us that the earthquake itself seemed to last forever. It was very long. Also, were just getting reports that some of the buildings in northern pakistan where it was also felt have collapsed. There are unconfirmed reports of fatalities. Again, i need to stress unconfirmed, but were working on getting additional information. Something to note as well, this quake came just a couple days after some really heavy rain fell in a lot of afghanistan. Authorities tell us that those divers are actually on their stomachs several feet under water when they recovered it by hand. They say that 40caliber glock is consistent with the one that claimed officer holders life. It was a very intensive search yesterday along the fdr and under water as well. Part of the fdr was actually shut down for a short time sunday as roughly 100 Police Officers<\/a>, some who volunteered, conducted a ground search aimed at finding bullets fired at officer holder. Around 3 00 a. M. , divers recovered that handgun they say was consistent with the one used to kill the officer during a foot chase in east harlem last week. As they prepare to lay him to rest this week, officer holders loved ones paid tribute to his memory on sunday. I told this to his father. I said, we will always be here for you. You have an extended family that will never forget you. Makes me feel relaxed until the feelings hit again. But im trying to cope the best i can. Reporter after randolph holder was shot in the head last week, the gunman apparently threw his weapon into the east river. 30yearold tyrone holder has been charged with murder as well as robbery. A 2yearold boy and a College Student<\/a> from out of town were also killed in this accident. At least 46 others were hurt. Four of them critically. At least five people are dead, one person is missing in a tour boat tragedy in canada. The scene show the submerged vessel that sank near vancouver island. The whale watching boat capsized with 27 people on board. Several rescued vehicles were sent to an area pier after the boat sent out a mayday call last night. 21 people were pulled from the water and taken to area hospitals. Officials are trying to determine what caused the boat to capsize. Police in North Carolina<\/a> are looking for the gunman who wounded a College Student<\/a>. It happened on the durham campus of North Carolina<\/a>s Central University<\/a> around 11 15 last night. The school notified students about the shooting through twitter, urging them to seek shelter away from gunfire. Police gave the all clear about 45 minutes later. Michael, were getting some updates on the casualties now. At least 11 people dead, but that is just in pakistan, in a certain region there. That number will likely rise because of all the build thags have collapsed. 55 people have been taken to the hospital. The injured are continuing to arrive. All the hospitals there are on stand by. It was in northern afghanistan, but it was felt hundreds of miles away. It hit about an hour and a half ago at the tail end of lunchtime in that region. Some first pictures coming into the newsroom as well. An nbc producer in that region said the earthquake felt very strong and seemed to last forever. The walls were shaking. People were pouring out of buildings. Another nbc producer in lah er in r in lahore, pakistan, described it as being on a new york city subway, a rough ride, just up and down for a long time. His lunch on the table literally popping up anticipate d down. It was severe enough he wasnt able to hold on to his phone to snap a picture. So far, no aftershocks. They usually come in about 30 to 40minute sbher intervals. People there are being told to stay out of the buildings. The government is pretty much shut down at this point, not doing any work. We also need to mention that the quake came a couple days after really heavy rain fell in a lot of afghanistan. So those kind of mudbuilt homes and huts are very vulnerable at this point. And you may remember there was a massive earthquake that hit in that region back in 2013. In that particular earthquake, 515 people died. Happening now, investigators trying to confirm whether a gun found in the east river is the officer. Tracie strahan joins us from east harlem with the latest. Good morning, tracie. Reporter darlene, good morning to you. This was recovered under several feet of water and during a very intense search. Efforts to find dna and fingerprints on this 40caliber glock would be just one part of testing to be done this week. It was all found during a search of nearly 100 officers on the fdr yesterday. Many of them in hazmat suits lined up side by side, searching for any evidence that could direction of prosecuting the suspect in this case. Thats 30yearold tyrone howard. The scuba team from the nypds harbor unit recovered that firearm yesterday that authorities believe howard used to shoot officer holder in the head last week. He came face to face with a gunman believed to be howard who was on a bike. Authorities say the fire arm recovered early sunday has the same characteristics as the ones theyre looking for. It was down in 20 feet of water. He recovered it. The conditions down there, its dark. They can maybe only see 12 to 24 inches out in front of them. And theyre out on their bellies looking for this. He ended up finding it. And its a good find. Reporter meanwhile, a day of prayer last night. Officer holders loved ones honored him with prayers and songs and performances. The 33yearold will be laid to rest on wednesday of this week. As we bring you back live, were showing you the growing tribute to officer holder at psa5 here in harlem. The previous fire we reported at in New Brunswick<\/a> was on delafield. This is a third alarm. It appears the fire is out now, although significant damage unfortunately to the interior of this home. New this morning, the search for the gunman caught on chasm ra shooting another man at pointblank range. Katherine creag joins us from queens with what led up to the shooting. Reporter it was over a piece of jewelry, darlene. It happened on this street right here, right about this time when those two suspects ganged up on one victim. They wanted to steal the gold change he was wearing. There was a violent struggle the victim you see there. This happened 6 20 yesterday morning after shooting the 29yearold victim in the leg and stomach, the victim and suspect struggling with a gold chain around victims neck. The suspect also shot in the direction of another victim, but bullets missed that second person. The victim was transported to a hospital. Police describe the systems as 19 to 25 years old, both wearing hoodies. Police tell us this was an attempted robbery. They got away with nothing. As you saw, they clearly hurt that victim, put him in the back to you. Katherine creag, thank you. A fifth person now has been arrested in the hazing death of albany. All charged with firstdegree hazing, a misdemeanor, in the death of trevor duffy. He and other pledges were encouraged to drink a 1. 75liter bottle of liquor last november. Duffy was found unconscious with a blood alcohol level more than seven times the legal limit. Police are searching for the gunman who opened fire at a house party in queens. Two men were shot while leaving that party in bayside early sundays. The victims were hospitalized. One of them is a serious injury. Neighbors say there were hundreds of people at that party on a normally quiet street. Police say the home had been rented out for the event. The homeowners daughter was taken into custody. Theres no word as to any charges. Comedian amy schumer and her cousin senator Chuck Schumer<\/a> took their fight against guns to the steps of city hall. They stood side by side promoting their new social Media Campaign<\/a> aiming for change. It urges people to contact their senators to pass a gun bill. In a statement, black lives matter says it only targets policing that allows unchecked violence against black people.
