WNCN WNCN News At 6 February 24, 2016

So theres the big picture now. I can kind of slice the area into three sections. The i95 corridor, and east of there, about to get it. Many of you along i95 and west, are getting it now. That clues up to franklin county, on into the virginia area. The western part of our viewing area has been through a lot already. They are kind of in the all clear now. Lets first of all pop in the current Tornado Warnings. Those are the boxes you see here in red. Well start up to the north, and i want to just kind of go down the line of storms and well go in close and talk about what we have. First, parts of franklin and vance county, that is leaving wake county. It extends into Warren County as well. Thats a Tornado Warning in effect until 6 30. Thats this storm down here at the bottom of your screen, it its very quickly moving into parts of, there you can see, franklin, vance, and Warren County. That includes roseville, and wake forest. Its a big cluster of storms, but only a small portion of that could be producing a tornado. Thats right now on top of you guys in the roseville area. As we kind of go to split screen now, what youre seeing here on the left of me is our news tracker. That is currently here in raleigh, keeping an eye on the roads, which by the way, i just checked the traffic all over wake and Durham County. It is green most everywhere, so i think the warning that weve been giving the last few days, a lot of kids got out of school early. Has taken a lot of traffic off the roads. I think people are being smart. You can see a shot of traffic. As we continue kind of taking you through this long line of storms. Thats just one of the Tornado Warnings moving from franklin up to warden county. Weve got a second one thats 95 in johnston county. Parts of wayne. That includes areas like brogdon, stoney creek. In addition to the possibility of a tornado, which right now, kind of cutting through the area south of i95, and north, and northeast of i40, so its that area south of smithfield that could be seeing a tornado now in addition to heavy rain. Almost 2 inches of rain an hour. These storms arent staying around for an hour, but theyre producing really heavy rain. Thats our second Tornado Warning, theres a third one as well, as we go a little farther to the south. That one is impacting parts of cumberland, and Sampson County. That, as you can see, is just east of the fayetteville area. That is moving into parts of Sampson County right now. So its the tail end, right there, that has produced a Tornado Warning for cumberland, and Sampson County until 6 30 that goes for the towns of clinton, grays creek. Severe thunderstorm warning continues for parts of wake county, because as you can see, a second line, and well zoom into that wake county area. That second line may not be producing a tornado in parts of wake county, but it stretches down into parts of harnett county. As you can see, moving quickly, about ready to hit you guys in wake forest. Moving into carrie, and the western spots of raleigh. Thats a severe thunderstorm warning, that goes until 6 15, and those will bring with, strong winds, and possibility another round of hail. So its a very busy radar. As i just said, i have not seen it this busy, with this many weve had the outbreak in 2011. There were 30 tornadoes across the state that day. We do not have that many, but it hasnt been that busy since. From here, i want to switch over to a couple of things. Lets vance past the radar if we could, and i want to talk about the other aspects, including, i want to take a look outside, with whats going on with our tower cameras. Thats kind of whats going on with the radar right now. If you can click straight to, i believe what we have first up. There is our tower camera. Hoo is here in North Raleigh, this is downtown looking south, and you can see a little bit of everybody, weve got a little bit of bright sky sunshine trying to peek through. Theres a rain shaft off in the distance. Of course these ominous clouds have been hitting both of us. Look at our temperature, its still 66 degrees, so now we where usually, wed see the sun setting. Look at i440, west and eastbound. Heres out at the airport, weve got some clearing skies out there. They just got hit with a downpour. Theyve had a lot of problems out there with delays, temperatures are still incredibly warm for this time of the year, in the 60s and 70s. Remember, a cold front comes through overnight, and thats going to wipe away any of this warm weather. Our wind gusts continue to be incredibly high. This is outside of any talk of tornadoes and damaging wind. So as we put a wrap on our radar tour, i want to remind everyone, its very important to stay weather aware. Even if you dont use our app, i want you to utilize the technology to keep you safe. Not only keeping an eye on radar, but also, the iphones and newer androids have a newer setting, that our national that you can get emergency alerts. Ours does it too. Just search wncnwx. That is what weve had in the weather. Weve had a lot of news created unfortunately for today, with that, we turn it back to sharon and sean. I want to take you outside to wncns mario boone, hes at the orange Durham County line. We talked to you earlier, and you were at 15501 south. You were at a downed tree. What are you seeing where youre at now . Reporter look over there, someone has been dropped the top on their beamer. That gives you a sense how the weather is wet one minute and the next minute, perfectly dry. But this is 15501. You add in the mix of that, going southbound in that direction, what we were just talking about. That downed tree, and that is making matters even worse out here. And i can show you better than i can tell you, we just told you a moment ago, you can see exactly what im talking about, within the past half an hour. We were going northbound and we passed that, and saw that the tree had come down there, and some Good Samaritans actually stopped in the roadway. This is at 15501 and east town road, they got out of their vehicles and tried to move the tree themselves, and unfortunately, the tree was just too large, so the cops came in, and shut the roadway down and began to help turn traffic around, and clear that traffic up. This tree, is still down right now. When we left, the police were over there, trying to get it cleared. It does look like traffic has started to, it looks like traffic has started to ease a little bit. We talked to one of those Good Samaritans trying to get that off the roadway. Going to come right here. Think i can move, but just too heavy. Reporter back live here along u. S. 15501, again traffic moving a little better right now, but you can tell you guys, if youre coming this way, you can expect gridlock. You can expect some serious backups. Because again, that tree is still down at this time. We will continue to monitor things here with chapel hill police, and try to get an update for you guys as quickly as we can. Reporting live in the durham, Orange County line. Good to see things are looking so much better out there in durham. We dont see this typically in central north carolina, the sheer number of storms and Tornado Warnings. We have Team Coverage today and all night. Bo, you were at the site in lake ridge center, where a tree is down. You also have video you have uploaded for us. Tell us about the situation there. Reporter you guys should be able to take a look now at that video. Were at lake ridge center, which is on lake wing drive. Church road, so thats in a northern part of raleigh, and if youre able to see that video, you can see, theres a big part of this tree that came crashing down onto this building. The office it looks like it crashed into, is called the World Cultural Center. There was somebody who left there just a short time ago, and had to leave pretty quickly. Only told us that everything inside was damaged, and that there was a lot of artwork, and right now, people are trying to figure out exactly how to put a cover on the roof for the temporary time here. To obviously keep even more damage from coming in. We certainly just saw about 15 or 20 minutes ago, the storm passed by, wes, you heard talking about the impact to northern raleigh. When it came by, it came by quick. It was through us probably in about a minutes time, but there was even some hail that was mixed in with it. It was hitting our vehicle here, and it just sounds like, almost, if youre driving on the highway, and you have a pedal that would kick up and hit your windshield. That loud out here. Certainly, it was a tense moment out here, and obviously, your heart goes out to the folks that were at this lake ridge center. The World Cultural Center with the tree that just came down on top of the building, obviously, unexpected this afternoon. All right, bo minik out there live. Sharon, just an hour ago, here in North Raleigh in our studios, we had the tremendous force of that storm coming through here. We could hear the hail hitting. Right, it was probably about a half hour ago. Probably about that time we got the alert to say take cover because of the warning here in wake county. You know, a lot of people are closely keeping their eyes on the storm. Also the state is monitoring this as well. We have pictures from inside the office here in raleigh. Were taking a look at these now. The director is holding regular Conference Calls with fema. Theyre also watching the weather closely. Theyre deciding what resources need to be deployed. You might remember the governor activated the urban search and rescue teams on tuesday. Then theres also the d. O. T. s command center. They too, are keeping an eye on the road. So a very busy situation and the storm is still very far from over. Its been going on for a couple hours for now. And we still have several counties under those Tornado Warnings as we speak. Continuing our coverage, steve youre in our mobile news tracker, what do you see, and where are you . Reporter were seeing a lot of lightning right now. Let me show you the outside picture. When you say im driving a passenger, and the driver is photographer dan west. We have been in and out of situations throughout the afternoon. Were on live with our meteorologists when we literally drove into the heart of the tornado. They told us to take cover. We bailed out of the automobile, and knocked on a random door of a lovely family in chapel hill, they took us in, and we sheltered until that part of the storm passed. Then we pulled over on new bern avenue, and saw clouds that looked interesting. Interesting was kind of an understatement, as it turn os ut, wees was about to go on live, talking about, they were getting doppler inldz kateed rotation. But at the same time, dan west was saying to me, what are those clouds doing over there. I said, theyre moving one way. What about those clouds over there . Theyre moving the other way. We realized we had some rotation. We were parked for a short were driving into more heavy precipitation. I did, before we went on the air, i took some video, and did a 360 at that intersection of raleigh boulevard, and westinghouse boulevard. Pointing in one direction, you could see nothing but beautiful sunset, then you made the pan around, and youve got ugly looking clouds and some rain, and a lot of lightning. Even if the tornadic part of the storm is over, at least the one that passed through wake county, part of downtown raleigh, the heavy rain, and the lightning is still happening, and thats a really serious situation. Just about the time i got back in the automobile to begin talking live with you guys was when the lightning happened. We started seeing, boom, boom, boom, boom, 5, 6, 7, 8 in succession. Cloud to cloud, is serious enough. This is an angry system that everybody else has been talking its not quite through with us yet. If youre thinking of venturing out, my advice would be dont do it. We think thats probably enough for one day, were hoping our luck continues on until the system passes out. Im taking a look up capital belched and boulevard, and i can see a lot of black, icky clouds. Obviously, well keep an eye on it from our location, and you keep us safe. Steve, right now, were on the left side of the viewers tv at home. Youre seeing what looks like 440, our tower cam and that rain that you see in the now. Reporter its certainly an intention storm, its very tropical in nature right now. Thats the best thing i can say not a lot of people still on 440, excuse me, i should say on capital boulevard. Hoping folks are still taking the advice of people, and staying in their office until all of this stuff passes. As wees has indicated by 7 00 this evening, most of this stuff should be out of downtown area. Folks can venture home more safely than right now. Steve, as you said, this is a very angry storm. Be safe out there, well check with you a little later. Lets check in with wes hohenstein. Something that just occurred to me, weve compared this outbreak, its probably our biggest since what happened in april of 2011. Remember, that was april. We normally get Severe Weather kind of stuff, but this is february. Snow and ice. Weekend. In the sevenday forecast. So this is a very unusual event for us here in central north carolina. Its unusual anytime of year to have this tornado outbreak, but especially unusual that this is happening in february. We get 30 of our yearly snow in february. We dont get 30 of our Severe Weather. Heres what we have right now, the worst of the weather is still in a semi singular line that stretches up mecklenburg, it comes town through, mainly the i95 corridor, and wraps up, as it cuts over just south of cumberland county. Behind that, so for you guys in roxboro, and chapel hill, and Orange County, and durham, and siler city and down in hoke county. Even most of harnett county. I know youve had a rough go of it. Pretty much able to sound the all clear for that area. Not so for a lot of us. We continue to look at traffic on 440 east and on the west side of your screen. I want to take a tour, we still have several active Tornado Warnings. Our most recent one, it is just here right around the state border. Thats northwest of roanoke rapids. West of i85. That is for this one a Tornado Warning that continues for 6 45. That has mainly left northampton county, and that has moved into virginia. Youre going to see that box, but thats not really impacting anyone able to watch wncn at this point. Our second Tornado Warning is still in effect for parts of franklin, and Warren County, algoes until 6 30. Thats for areas of franklinton, lewisberg, that also comes with a severe thunderstorm warning. In some parts of our area, is doing just as much, if not more damage. Tornado warnings, they always steal the headlines, but severe thunderstorm warnings produce the more frequently, and widespread damage. We just talked to bo. It is likely the tree that got knocked down was because of a thunderstorm wind. That second Tornado Warning north of lewisberg now, north of 541, right east of 401. The possible rotation of that one, kind of tough to see here. Would you say thats up in Warren County . Still not very well defined. Not very well defined. Im kind of analyzing this with you together. We dont have a confirmed tornado with this one. Rotation that weve spotted up in the clouds. So again, lets switch back to our normal radar, and as you can see, thats a giant yellow box. That yellow box is one of those severe thunderstorm warnings weve talked about, thats producing torrential rain, along with damaging winds. We had some hail at the station a few minutes ago. Lets continue down south. Ill mention that while not under a Tornado Warning, there is plenty of rain into wilson county. Thats just good Old Fashioned rain. As for the other Tornado Warning we have, that is impacting johnston and wayne county. This is south. Theres i95, theres i40. The first up with for johnston moving into wayneston county, the other one for Sampson County, goes until 6 30 as well. As it stands right now, we have kind of, technically 4, but really only 3 when it comes to Tornado Warnings. These all still have to march to our friends on the coat, and theyre going to have to deal with this in darkness. Many of us out to the west are in the clear. But these storms, probably have another one to two hours before they completely clear our area. I want to finish with our tornado watch, because earlier in the day, that was in effect for all of central north carolina. For those of you who ive talked about are in the clear, that includes our western counties, the tornado watch has been dropped. The rain has now moved out. So you guys can sit back and breathe a sigh of relief. But for everyone else, we still have another couple of hours. The tornado watch technically right now, its 6 22. That is kind of a snapshot of whats going on with what has weather day. I promise, we have an improved forecast as we head into tomorrow. Well hold you to that wes today. We have Team Coverage right now. We want to send it down it to wayne county with one of our reporters. Reporter sharon, and sean, as wes just mentioned, were under a Tornado Warning right now. This is really the Second System that has come through the area. The first system made quite an impact. Caused a bit of damage to homes in the area. Heavy winds. Some hail, a lot of rain as well. We spoke with a family who has a ridge off of their mobile they did tell me, it was just a terrifying experience, there was 60, 70 mileperhour winds, rain coming down, and the roof just coming off their home. We spoke to a neighbor as well, t
