These defendants were brokers, recruiters, and employers who unlawfully and fraudulently attempts to obtain visas for a thousand foreign nationals from approximately 26 different countries. Prosecutors tell us there was no shortage of shady recruiting companies and brokers who allegedly lured foreign students, many from india and china, with the promise of education and jobs. Vetted them and the students for any potential threats. Dari the controversial exams have been redesigned from last year, but that is not enough for some parents and students. Steve Jodi Goldberg caught up with kids who decided to skip todays test. Reporter out of a class of 25 or so students at one Elementary School in rockville center, these are the few who are taking the common core for english. The others who opted out filled the auditorium. This parent decided abbey and t. J. Were better off not taking the test. 60 percent of students opted out. Last spring 20 percent of students in the state refused to take the test. That number this go around is expected to be even higher. If it was done to assess their performance, id have them unfortunately, its not. Reporter Officials Say the tests are an important yardstick to measure student abilities and wont be used for assessment for four years. Fewer questions and no time limits are among the improvements theyve made. Some parents we spoke with say the change theyre looking for is to get rid of the test altogether. The kids are tested so much throughout the year already, its unfair to put that pressure on them. Reporter others say its good practice. My children dont get the picture of why theyre not taking the test. They would only think theyre just getting out of a test. For the next 15 years, theyll be taking tests. Not a big deal.
