She was fiesty and on point, and she was still writing and this is our memory of jackie on good day just a few weeks ago. And jackie is back on good day new york. We love having you here. And it took a lot for her to get back on her feet again. Well, you know, they told us she would never be able to walk again and no more kids. And my daughter wrote the new song for the new play. So sometimes, you know, we went through such a hard time this is life, and, you know, its when you leave cuba and, you know, i knew when i said goodbye to my family, i would never see them again. A lot of people identify with the community, and its going to be great reviews, and were looking forward to opening in new york. Break a leg. Beautiful, the carol king story beautiful. Kind of like that in terms of the life story. It is similar, but i think youre going to find a lot of the beginning of our career was a lot of rejection about having a latino last name. Now, i feel like this is a little political motivation. A little bit. Its very much about hispanic heritage. I hear a lot of the things being negative about the whole latino community, and i wanted to expose the American Dream and how positive we are and allow lucky how lucky we are to live in the united states. We know we have a problem with immigration that we need to fix, and i just feel people need to know whoever we bring to the white house needs to reunite people, not divide people. We have somebody who could with person because i think were doing in the wrong direction. So you left cuba when you were 17 years old 14, 17 . I was 14. You were a teenager. Ive heard a few minutes ago that youve not been back. The pope has been there, my mother has been there. Why dont you go back . Were not allowed to go. Weve been very open with the human rights situation. Do you think this was a mistake . No. I think going the pope, this pope has done so many great things. Hes changing the but the overall normalization somewhat of the relations between u. S. And cuba, i know not everybody in south florida was thrilled by that. Its five different generations. To me, im in the middle. I always think that theyre going to bring some hope to the cuban people. I still think nothing will change when we still have two dictators there. Thats the kind of thick people need to know thing people need to know. But i think the pope going there is fantastic, its great, and were looking forward for the cuban people to have a better life. You were telling us in the commercial break about what it was like. You try today rescue your family from cuba, and tell us about that boat trip. You know, when they opened, it was the only way theyd release some of the families. We went on a 24inch, i mean, a really small boat, and we got lost without gas for 18 days. 18 days. No gas, no food. Little food, little water, and when i got there, they denied my family, i wasnt allowed to wring them to the state to bring them to the united states. My niece who is a very famous host on univision, she come back to the states, and she had a beautiful career, and im very proud of her. Wow. Is this all part of the musical . No. The musical is youre going to have a surprise because the whole thing is about my motherinlaw and me. So get ready. [laughter] do you get along with her . Now, but when i started dating gloria,. No. How did you meet gloria . I used to have a well known band, and i went to see her. I saw her performing, and i love her their voice. And three months later i was playing a wedding by the way, you only loved her voice . She was really young. She was only 17 years old. [laughter] but shes beautiful. Shes beautiful. Im sorry. Then, wait, what happened . [laughter] i was playing a wedding, she came into the wedding, i saw her, and i said come sing a song, and i love her voice and, her. I was glorias only boyfriend. Fantastic. Never know. You were her first boyfriend . They say is, youre great the age difference is not seismic. Its not that much. Were only five years apart. [laughter] did she. Absolutely. Song .
