This happened at 8 30 this fatality. Looking at the New York Post web site right now, theyre saying that one of the people put a blanket over a mans body that may have been a worker at the scene who worked for the construction company. Were also hearing that this crane stood 1518 stories high. Thats really, really high. There are other people who were tweeting us from that area that area. All right. Want to bring in stacy dell cath at this Stacey Delikat at this point, she is just down the greg and rosanna, thats right, were about two blocks down where police have moved us, because theyre trying to clear the area around worth street. We, again, know at least two people are seriously injured, and its unclear if others who may have been walking down the block were hit by any debris and injured as well, but we know two people were taken to Bellevue Hospital to be treated for injuries and, of course, one person was killed. Now, it did happen around 8 30. And its part of tribeca that has become more and more residential. Angela, you know, move over to the side. Weve got more Police Coming through here. As you can imagine, a lot of police, a lot of members of the fire department, ems, Buildings Department, emergency services, everyone trying to get over here for this investigation. This area has become a lot more residential over the years, and its also near all the the municipal and government buildings, so a lot of people were headed out and about to and we know there were probably a lot of people around when this happened. The fact that the Fire Departments telling us right now there are only two serious injuries is pretty good news considering it could have been a lot worse. Again, that crane came down on two several parked cars, really damaging those cars there. And were still waiting to find out some details from the Buildings Department on what building this crane was actually working on. I mentioned that new building under construction right behind 40 worth, but im told by several people in this area the crane was not here for that. It was actually stationed on worth street. Unclear whether the building weve been talking about, 60 hutchins street, had anything to do with this or not. As is always the case when these cranes collapse, especially when theres a fatality, its a very, very thorough investigation that usually takes a long time for the Buildings Department to get to the bottom of. So i dont expect theyll tell this was but, again, we do know the weather was really bad earlier this morning. The snow has slowed a little, but it was really windy. That may have played a factor. And we know that several buildings in the area were under construction. So were waiting to get some more information. First responders continue to arrive on scene. Were hoping to, actually, get some of them to give us some updated information in the next few minutes so we can bring that to you guys. Thank you so much. You know, the New York Post is reporting that this crane was carrying a wrecking ball. I got a tip that this crane was preparing to lift some kind of equipment. Obviously, information is very, very sketchy at this point. But its a familiar ritual, this breaking news situation with a collapsed crane in manhattan. This city undergoing heavy construction and renovation, and you can look back over the past year. In november a construction worker killed in what they called a freak new york city going back to may, at least ten hurt after a crane smashed into a building in midtown. Six weeks prior another crane accident. And in years past weve seen them in this neighborhood. We want to bring in Ben Simmoneau be, hes monitoring social media and other sources what do you have . We actually have a new video from this instagram user. Here it is, shows a different perspective, but it kind of gives you a sense. That crane is almost two blocks long. It goes all the way through the intersection, spans the one whole block of worth and then the other whole block. Theres a joint there and then a second whole arm of that boom right there. Lets go forward. This is the other video that was posted, a closer look at the upside down cab, again, looking down worth street. And you can see the snow really coming down. Some still pictures coming in. Again, this one thats actually a great view. I dont know how close todd, if you can zoom in here you i mean, this crane, the cab is basically at one corner of worth, it extends all the way to the intersection and goes another whole block down worth. So really incredible size. Youve got to wonder, that large a machine out with the winds and the snow, they perhaps thought they could handle whatever they were doing. Theres another crushed car right there, and you can see it looks to be a triangular shaped boom and one of the long beams came down right on the center of that car. That, again, from the fdnc, confirming the fatality with two in serious condition. Look at the size of it, guys, and you can see the tractors just up in the air. I want to switch gears, the subway tweeting out one trains bypassing franklin and chambers due to that train collapse. You have to wonder also if theres people that are in that a lot of people down there tweeting, posting this stuff on facebook and instagram, and well bring it to you. Those are extraordinary images, and thats the first time ive seen really the full scope of it. Right. Much forth further than it initially looked. Once again, my source is telling me about what the crane was carrying, claims that they were bringing some kind of data equipment, lifting equipment to the 24th floor for a Data Center Project on hudson, near hudson street. And thats, thats when it went down. You see ben just showed us the tractor itself upside down. And look at that from that per spiskt. Look at perspective. Look how massive and long that crane is. Again, we are i think were fortunate just one fatality. This could have been much, much worse. Yeah. Meanwhile, there are lots of businesses in that area. I told you about the Innocence Project, other Legal Services apparently, theyre telling their people to go home now. Its 9 37. Morning. Were also hearing reports of people smell gas in the vicinity. We heard con you wouldson is around there con edison is around there. Theyre trying to close those area. So its still a very, very active scene. Well be right back. Out of its shell. Weve got breaking news from Lower Manhattan in the tribeca area. For some reason this morning a huge crane collapsed. They said its about 1518 stories high when it just suddenly broke apart and came crashing down on the street. People, some people were pinned inside their cars, some were just on the street. This is 40 worth street, about four or five blocks northwest of city hall. One fatality confirmed at this point. Want to bring in Stacey Delikat, our reporter. Shes been moved. Shes close to the scene, a safe distance away by orders of the fire department. Good morning again. Hi, greg and rosanna, good morning to you. Coming back from Lower Manhattan here, what were hearing now is of those two people who were injured, one of them may have actually been in one of those parks cars on the scene that from the daily news is one of the people was pulled from the vehicles. Again, pretty good situation right now in that only one fatality and two seriously injured. Of course, it is tragic for those people, but considering this was 8 30 in the morning, a lot of people headed to work, taking their kids to school, its a really busy area with the municipal buildings down here, so its fortunate considering the scale, the scope of this huge crane that there were not more injuries. Let me step out so we can show you more here. Again, youre seeing a lot of First Responders, department of Environmental Protection now on scene, office of emergency services, nypd, fdny, Buildings Department, so on and so forth. Literally hundreds of First Responders and investigators from the city down here at the scene as it continues to snow, trying to investigate this and secure the area to make sure it is safe. If you go on my twitter page, i did get some new video from someone who was on the street just moments after the accident. On the air soon too. He told me, he was actually a block or two away. He really didnt hear anything out of the ordinary, because it can be kind of noisy down here anyway with the truckings. He was on the block right away. He saw a person being rushed away on a stretcher, and he was able to take video of this crane kind of walking up and down the street, and it kind of gives you a sense of just how massive it is. Again, still waiting to get clarity on what building the crane was working on, what exactly it was doing, whether it did, in fact, have a wrecking ball attached as some initial reports have suggested. But right now we know that the First Responders are continuing to secure the scene and that a large chunk of the area down here in tribeca is shut off to traffic. You can see one car was able to turn around and get out the other way, otherwise he would be trapped. Pretty much between duane and at least a block north of worth, Church Street is shut down and, of worth a two block stretch shut down too. So that is causing some heavy traffic delays on a day where traffic would already be bad because its a friday morning around rush hour, and its snowing pretty hard. Again, waiting to get some more details with the latest still that two people seriously injured, taken to bellevue, one person killed when this crane basically appears to have snapped in half and fallen onto worth street. Thank you so much for that report. Weve got more reporters going to that area. Well have more information for cough if you can hear me. I took mucinex dm for my phlegmy cough. Yeah. But what about mike . Cough it works on his cough too. Coughs for 12 hours. Lets end this. Was a lot faster a hassle to switch, turns out it wasnt. A major crane collapse, at least one fatality. We have with us perhaps the first witness on the scene. Yeah. Vincent is an official with the sergeants benevolent association, the police union. Im told also he is an active duty member of the force. Are you there, sir . Yes. Good morning. Good morning. Rosanna and greg with you. What did you see . Well, coming in in the morning as soon as i walked through the door, i mean, the crane came down and rocked the whole building, so myself where were you, vincent . What were you . I was right where the crane came down. Worth street, our building is 35 worth street. It came down right in front of our building. Whatd you do, by the way . Crane comes down, you dont see that every day. Myself and other members of the building searched all the cars to see if there was anyone trapped. There was one individual trapped and, unfortunately, there was an individual in the street that took the full force of the crane. Was that person on the street someone in the construction field . At the time i couldnt tell, and to be honest with you, i dont have any identification. Gotcha. Okay. Obviously, you have to be shaken up. I mean, youre talking about moments, it could have been a life or death situation for you. Its like everything else, and i know its cliche, but its adrenaline. You look to help everybody else out. Youre not thinking about yourself. There was one individual that was trapped. So were hearing all kinds of reports about where the crane was actually operating, what was it doing. Was it renovating an old one and what address specifically was being worked on . It was on worth street where the crane was. I know it was doing work on the building that is about half a block away from where my building is, and i believe they might have been transporting heavy equipment up into one of the top floors. Yeah. Because im hearing, and i dont know if youve heard this too, that they were lifting equipment to bring it to 60 hudson street for a tenant called data grid. Its on the 24th floor of 60 hudson street. Cant get that confirmed, but thats what im hearing from a source. Anythings possible, but there was nothing on that crane when it came down. From what we were told, they were trying to move the crane because of the wind. I believe they were trying to get it in a better direction because of the force of the wind. So, sergeant, it was pretty windy then around that time. Absolutely. Huh. Okay. Vincent and because of the weather, a crane that size falling down on that street, you work there, youre there every day busy every morning. Seems like were almost lucky we only have one fatality and a absolutely. Sergeant, also you can probably tell me about this, but im hearing that area has so many security cameras all over that area because a lot of Traffic Court judges park around there, the new York Law School is right around there, the Innocence Project is there, there. Yes. I know theres cameras on a lot of the poles up around this area. And nyus top of the building was damaged because of the crane. Well, vincent, we thank you very much for joining us. Were glad youre safe. Thank you for sharing your observations with us, and good luck to you. Thank you very much. Well, in this crane collapse were hearing that some people smelled gas, there was some concern about that. We have with us on the phone alfonso joins us from con ed. Are you there, sir . Yes, i am, im here. Hello. We did have initial reports about gas, people smelling gas in the area. Anything on that . Yes. We are working to excavate or cut a few low pressure gas main at west broadway and worth street at this point right now. Okay. And so is everything completely secure right now . Youre sill in the process of doing it . Obviously, were still in the process of doing it. When a large incident like this happens, we will always send some of our crews out there. We have gas mains there, we have steam pipes and, obviously, we have electric customers there. And what will happen is that when a large event like this happens, we will send crews out there just in case if they need us. And in this case, obviously, one of our, one of our facilities were getting reports of gas odor. So what we did is we sent a crew out there, we located where the damage was at, and we turned the gas main off so at least the gas flow will stop. And then what well do is we work with the First Responders to make sure that everyone is safe. Were probably going to be having some customers out there without gas, and then we will look to make the repairs as needed. Thank you very much, sir. You know, for a while, rosanna, it seemed like every couple of weeks we would have another massive crane mishap, some resulting in fatalities. Last year was a difficult year. As recently as novemb
