WNYW Good Day New York Street Talk November 28, 2015

I see your eyes. I know your eyes. All right. Lets talk about it, journalist and film critic joe new meyer is here. Before we begin, everybody in the studio when that clip was playing was glued right to a monitor. Danny, everybody. Look at joe. [laughter] he hasnt moved yet. Hes still sitting there looking at it. Every eye was turn today a monitor trying to see this. This thing is going to be huge. It gives you shivers, it really does. I really hi the movie of the year, because while theres a lot of great films we have seen already, this is going to be the one that a lot of people are going to remember, 2015 was the return of star wars. And it looks like j. J. Abrams is doing it exactly right. It looks like the first movie in a lot of ways, but it also has the sophistication we have come to expect. The cast looks terrific. You mentioned shivers, app twang, absolutely. That music comes on, you see those images, it is the movie to see. I have to tell you having grown up as a kid in the 70s, the only one i saw in the theater was Empire Strikes back. I was 6 years old, but the rest ive seen at home. Sure. Having said all of that, the minute you hear the music it really does. It hits you, you know . The first trailer was released where han solo said, chewie, were home, my friend greg said he got tears in his eyes. It feels like youre back in your childhood in some ways whether it was 1977, 1980, 198 be, i remember hopping fences to see the films when i was the kid. Those are types of things, you hop fences to get ahead of the line. What a terrific thing. In an era now where people can watch movies on their phones, when theyre so accessible that people are still so excited about this movie in theaters. The only question is why isnt luke on the poster . Theres a mystery to that. Okay. You know something. [laughter] ive only heard rumors like everybody else. I think theres going to be more to lukes story than i think were anticipating. Hes going to be hes grow canning his beard, apparently growing his beard, apparently, for the second film theyre filming. Theres some sense whether hell be on the dark side, is he the father of one of these new characters, either oscar isaac or daisy ridley . Who knows . Twists. The other one thats opening this weekend, creed. A lot of buzz about that. Another return of a character from the 70s, this is rocky balboa, this is the son of apollo creed, the Carl Weathers character who was rockys rival and mentor and became his friend. And, really, its really terrific. In a lot of ways the first half is like an indie film that rocky balboa is lumbering through, and then it becomes a fullon rocky movie. The director did fruit vail station a couple of years ago, the star is michael b. Jordan who also did that movie. Its really entertaining, and stallones good. Hes always good not always, but hes better when hes directed by other people. The original rocky, the first blood, the first rambo movie, theres buzz he could get an oscar nomination for best supporting actor being one of the few to ever get two nominations two separate years for the same character. He got an oscar nomination for the first rocky 1975, yeah. All right. Lets talk about the good dinosaur. The good dinosaur is pixars new movie. They replaced the voice cast and now its coming out this weekend, and its about a boy that presupposes a world where the dinosaurs were not destroyed by the meteors, so they have evolved a little bit with some prehistoric humans, a dinosaur and a young boy go on a journey. Pixars already done their part this year with inside out. They have contributed to the art form so beautifully. So i think itll be a Good Opportunity for parents and kids to go out after thanksgiving. Well see if it makes the money, i dont think it will. Its going to be a hit but not a huge hit like inside out. Now, the danish girl, i didnt know about that one before our interview today. It stars eddie redmayne, he plays the recipient of the worlds first sex change operation, male to female in the early 1930s, an artist from copenhagen. Hes also very good in the movie, also the actress who plays his wife, the movies, its going to be an oscar contender. Theyre bringing out mcbeth. Thats right. Really gritty, violent mcbeth, michael fassbender, he plays a scottish general turned king. Its a gritty, moody movie, i would say. Its a really intense take on shakespeare, but its this falls shakespeare adaptation. I think everyone who likes shakespeare will get everything they want out of it. Cotillard, is she lady mcbeth . She has got all the great scenes. Its a showcase for those two. Shes an oscar winner. She is, thats right. In the heart of the sea. In the heart of the sea, ron howard directing this nautical adventure. It takes place in the 1820s, and its about the seafaring expedition that inspired herman melvilleing to write moby dick. It stars chris hemsworth, and i like ron howard, and i think hes good in big scope movies like this. Apollo 13 was one of the best movies of the 90s, i think. Well see if this draws people in. Tell me about sister. This one im unfamiliar with. Amy poehler and tina fey who are costarring for the First Time Since 2008 when they did baby mama. This is only their second movie together . Right. Everybody thinks of them as a female version of bob hope and bing crosby. They did snl together, of course, and a couple of golden globe hosting gigs, so this is mama. They play sisters, amy is the uptight one, and they decide to have one last big bash in their parents house before they move out of it, james bro lin and looks good in the gray hair there. Yeah, thats right. And theyre terrific together anytime, so this looks like a good comedy. Now, concussion, thats the will smith one, right . Yeah. Instance bic pa thomas who in 2006 was looking at the cases of about a half dozen nfl players, a lot of them from the pittsburgh steelers, who had died or committed suicide under mysterious circumstances. And he came up with a new disease called cte which was head. And the nfl, of course, rejected this, and he became sort of a pariah. But its a really terrific movie. Its a lot like the insider. Its a great whistleblower movie, and it really its something that were watching on our screens every week on sunday and monday watching these guys slam into each other. This is a terrific look behind the scenes and a fascinating all right. And joy, lets talk about joy. Jennifer lawrence who, of course, is on screens right now for the hunger games. She plays a reallife character named joy magnago, and she was a long island housewife who in the 90s invented something called the miracle mop. And she was a single mom, and she made this, carved out this niche for herself, and she became a millionaire. I know that name. This is her story. David o. Russell directed the movie that got her a best actress oscar. Silver linings playbook. Together. Well see if she can round out nomination. I saw this trailer the other day, hateful eight. Yeah. The Quentin Tarantino movie. Its a lot of fun in some ways. Its a western suspension thriller. Its shot in 70 millimeter. Oh. Yeah. Its oldfashioned down to the moustache these guys wear. Its got an intermission, it has a prelude you walk into, you know, its got the score playing. This is his stagecoach. An homage to john ford. Thats right. It looks terrific on the big screen, and its shot on film. Its playing on film in a lot of these locations. Kurt russell plays a bounty hunter, Jennifer Jason leigh hes a good actor. Hes really good. Jennifer jason leigh is his oh, wow. And sam jackson, tim roth, a lot of people who have worked with Quentin Tarantino better. Its unlike django unchained, its an oldfashioned suspense thriller western. Dare we compare it to high noonish . Certainly, it is like some of those great 50s action yeah. A lot of great actionadventure westerns are in its blood, and its the modern twist that Quentin Tarantino is known for. Lets quickly get to the rev significant. I heard its interesting. It is interesting. Last year for birdman and stars leonardoty cap pri owe in the 1820s who is left for dead by some of his fellow fur trappers, and he survives and has to fight his way back. Its very intense, and its got a lot going on. But in some ways its also like a western actionadventure thrill ride. He dose over a mountain at one point. Its got a lot of ideas to it, but it also constantly comes at you. And it could be dicaprios oscar. Hes been nominated four times before, once for best supporting actors. I think he should have been nominated for three other films. Hes really terrific in this, so well see what happens. An interesting matchup if black mass andty cap pri owe go head to head again. Yeah, it will be. Johnny depp was an early favorite for black mass, fassbender could still get in. I think that race is going to be very interesting. Before you go, we have to talk about spectre. [laughter] okay. Greg kelly, one of my best friends be, we went to see it. He did not like the movie, greg absolutely hated the movie. I was okay with it, but i have to tell everybody, you cant go expect to see skyfall ii. Thats right. You need to take it as being the next james bond film. It stands on its own. It was really long, for one thing. Greg thought it was 30 minutes too long. I like that. You could fit two roger moores into one. I dont know why everybody was complaining at it. They had a classic villain, a terrific dan yell craig performance, and i think the feel of it felt novelistic and operatic in a lot of ways. I think people were preponderating more of expecting more of skyfall, but i thought it was terrific. The second best daniel craig bond film after casino royal. I liked this better in some ways. Really . I did. Yes. Coming up next, a tribute to legend everything bentley and celebration when we meet the moores were the moore family, and as you can see, we need an internet that can do more. We do more games, and more streaming. So we need more speed. Thats why we switched to Time Warner Cable. Now we can connect more devices, at the same time. Hi grandma and grandpa ha, look at that [laughs] Time Warner Cable even has an internet plan for us. Get 50 meg internet for 39. 99 per month and ask about free installation. Good day street talk, antwan the Arts Community is coming together to acknowledge a century of contributions to the International Theater world. Happy birthday, eric bently, a taking place december 7th at the town hall. Here to tell us about it is mr. Austin pendleton and soprano Karen Leavitt to talk to us all about it. Weve watched you on screens, we know who you are from my cousin vinnie and just such a pleasure to have you here. Thank you. But for those who may not know mr. Bentley, tell us about him. Eric bentley is a great writer. Hes a playwright, for one thing. Hes also a translator of playwrights. He brought us brecht, he made him accessible. He translated him. All the first really Important Productions or three pennyopera right. Were his translations. He forged a path. He opened up those doors. And he wrote a whole lot of books about playwrighting in theater. When i was a kid in ohio and we my mom had been a professional actress, and she was part of a community theater. We had erics books in our living room, in our library. And i was a kid, and i would just devour what he read what he wrote. And he wrote about what he read too. [laughter] and he was so passion nail and so smart passionate and so smart. Those two things dont always go together. Right. Sometimes they do. And they did in him. And he just kicked open a lot of doors to me just reading him. Your mom, does she find him equally influential . Oh, yeah. Yeah. He was argumentative in his writing. I mean, i didnt meet him until after i first came to new york when i studied with berg do have, and they knew him. But at this point in ohio i knew him just as this man who wrote these books and translated these plays. And he just made it seem like to spend a life in the theater would be a very exciting thing. Now, hes well regarded, you know, in terms of that, you know, just the number of people and the research that i was doing before you all came up, you know, just about, you know, the awards that hes won, you know . But when you think about a translator, you absolutely have to have someone to bring the material over to introduce it to a wider medium. Absolutely. His contribution to theater and, actually, to music and to the culture, American Culture in theater and literature at large is gigantic. In addition to everything that austin has said and to amplify on the point of translation because he brought great, great theatrical works to the american stage. Brecht, but also lorkav, he translated all these fantastic playwrights from europe and when they were all but unknown here. Yes. Right. Now these playwrights are part of theyre part of american theater. We owe that to eric bentley. Yes. Totally. And in particular in terms of song repertory, people dont really realize what an extraordinary master poet he is to be able to translate songs from german by, with words by great poets, with music by hans eisler. To translate songs is nothing less than to unlock, unlock a song that was formerly cloistered in another language. In this case, specifically german. And to allow the music to enter into the american stream of music so that it has an influence. So when you think of a song like mack the knife from three penny opera, a lot of people take it for granted, you know, that bobby darrin sang that song, that Ella Fitzgerald made up the words, that thats an american song. In fact, thats a german song in english translation. Yeah. And its hard to wrap your mind around that. Not you, but anybody, you know . When you think about the import of that. Ill tell you why im smiling, its because the album ella in berlin is where she up exactly. Because it was a german song and they were so resent i of it receptive of it, but we had that in our house, you know . Oh, really . Yeah. We had ella in berlin, thats how i knew the story about she forgot the words and just made it up, and it became part of so many things. You tell me about the concert. Tell us about erics concert. Well, you tell them, because youre going to sing im going to save you words. [laughter] first of all, its just amazing to be in the company of austin oh, absolutely. On this occasion, and thank you so much for having us here. So this is a tribute and concert, and we have also other extraordinary theater and literary notable people such as tony kushner, Michael Reidl of the New York Post and others all sharing anecdotes and talking about erics broad and deep influence on American Culture at large. As well as a concert. And i am a span be know, and i soprano, and i will be performing the songs of hans eisler who was a contemporary of brecht whom eric bentley translated. So my pianist and be i will be performing songs of hans eisler who has just recorded an album which is due to be are released in january to be released this january amazon . Everything. Okay. So nice to meet you. You too. Thank you so much for coming karen thank you so much. Stick around for one quick second, because were coming back talking about giving back you can do to making winter plans . Dont let the flu bug get in the way everyone six months and older should get their flu shot now. Its the best protection from the flu. Call your doctor today so stores are now open around the clock, shoppers looking for great deals. We know its the Holiday Season, but its also the time to give back, and here with ways to do so, the director of campaigns and days of service and teacher Aldina Kennedy whos also a joy so nice to meet both of you. Sure. Thank you so much for having us here to talk about giving back. Its a division of points of light, igniting youth to make their mark on the world through volunteering. So our programs support young people in developing empathy and compassion. Is this the season that you find it well, we know we should be giving back throughout the year, you know . But a lot of times do you think it gets eclipsed or overshadowed because of the hustle and bustle of this time of year were in . I do. I think its really hard. We have family coming, presents to buy, but its also most important and easiest, wail, to give actually, to give back. So to help kids and teens give back because thats our focus, weve launched the joy maker challenge which helped kids and teens do volunteer service to country. Kids and teens can sign up and find project ideas and do great community. Aldina, youre a teacher. How has joy maker gone over with your students . I am acting as a mother right now. Im working at the school of my son whos a fourth grader, and its been a big hit at school because it provides easy opportunities to do what kids do best, which is spread joy. And our project, kids are giving out 250 gifts to preschoolers who really need them. Its they get it. They lo gifts. Awesome. They want to help. And for parents and teachers who do need a little extra help explaining to their children, generationon. Org offers reflection materials to help parents teach their kids about some of the issues at the heart of the joy maker challenge like childhood sickness or okay. And so we have projects that can help kids give back and help parents and teachers explain to them why thats important. Example. Go right ahead. One of my favorite projects is called caring cards. Parents can do it at home with their kids, teachers can do it in the classrooms, kids can do it with friends. It involves kids making cards to send to other children in need. You write simple holiday messages that are uplifting and joyful and send them either to Sick Children who might be in the hospital during this season or to kids who might have suffered from the recent tragedy in paris. And its a wonderful way for kids to learn about other children who might not be experiencing joy during the Holiday Season and then for them to take action to help those children through volunteering. So nice to meet you. Well put the information on our web site. Wonderful. And the name of the school again is [inaudible] park school in the bronx. We are really into service. Absolutely.
