WNYW Good Day New York Street Talk December 12, 2015
Of harlem features the first noel. Its playing now through december 31st at the apollo sound stage. Jason michael webb,
Lelund Thompson
are here, joined by ty jones, the artistic director for the classical theater of harlem. Good morning to you. Background d on the first noel, whats it about, jay . About a family who has suffered a great loss around christmas time. Lelund, how did it come about . It came about a couple of years ago. Ty jones said we need to recreate a 21st century dickens, someplace that offers a place for our community to see something that gets us in the
Christmas Spirit
uptown. And he was, like, i think you are the guy to do it, you and
Jason Michael
webb. How long have you two been collaborators . Wow, a few years. This piece was commissioned back in 2012, and weve been working on this since then. Lelund, and now when we think of the holidays, you know, youre talking about loss, you know . Is it a tough theme to try to manage into an uplifting experience . I think we wanted to have something that was authentic to the holiday season. Okay. We wanted to make sure that we move people in profound and measurable ways and pleasurable ways as well too. So i think at the end of the day to be able to have a substantive story that actually brings joy to folks during the season. Most difficult part when you get this idea, walk us through the process, jason. Whats the first thing you do, you start thinking music . You get the book together or whats the first part . The most difficult and also the most rewarding part of doing this is getting to know these characters, because this is a story that seemed to write itself and these characters when they were speaking. The hardest part was suffering the heartbreak of hearing these characters go through what theyre going through and the joy was seeing them overcome. We know we want people to go something, anything any snippet you can tease us with a little bit . Tys smiling. [laughter] i think, i mean, even though it deals with loss, it deals are are with recovery from loss. And i think that people will walk out even though were dealing with loss smiling, humming the songs and feeling just like theyre ready to celebrate the holiday. We cant escape it, we know that loss has to happen, so, you know, and it doesnt always happen in nonholiday seasons. So we understand that it can happen. You know, during this time. But when youre talking about weaving in pop, jazz and gospel, how tough of a thread was that to needle . Well, the beauty of the culture whose lens this story is being told through is theres so many different parts of it. Each type of music deals with the joy, deals with the loss, deals with the recovery. And so where something thats traditional musical theater might have a little more solemn town, the gospel is the les a lot of uplift theres a lot of uplift and joy in this music. Sort of
Christmas Carol
meets black nativity. Oh, okay. Thats a nice little mix there. Was there an aha moment for you . Were there any sort of personal inspiration when you took this idea to lelund . Yeah, actually is. Lelund and i worked on a piece called emancipation. He did the incidental music for that show and he, essentially, saved that show with what he was able to bring to the to it. And at that point it was like weve got to figure out how to do something together. And he said, well, ive got the perfect formula. Lets bring in
Jason Michael
webb. And jason, hes humble, but his resume speaks for itself. Hes doing double duty now. Hes the musical director on color purple oh, wow. As well as being responsible for the book, music and lyrics on this. So were really lucky to have both of these guys taking on the task of doing the show for us. [laughter] ms. Hudson is now with you. The whole cast is fantastic. When you found out that the apollo, the legendary, his to historic apollo said, yes, we want to help you tell this story, your reaction to that. Im still pinching myself right now. [laughter] the music had been worked on, we had good fortune of being able to showcase some of the music at the red rooster, the supper club. The owner said that was one of their best nights that they had on a thursday night, and we were fortunate enough to have the apollos brass come and see it. They sent an email the next day and said lets talk about this. They had already had dedicated programming in the month of december for 2015, and we werent sure if it was going to be possible. But
Mickey Shepard
and some of the other folks, joe levy cleared the month of december. I was like, okay, lets make so weve had some supporters come behind us to help us with workshops, including folks that arent even in new york city;
North Carolina
a and t has helped us out we love our hbcus. [laughter] without question, you know, hbc us are whats created the current black middle class. So we need to really raise their profile because they have been, without question, an important part of american history. So its great to take this story that is through the lens of the
African Diaspora
and be able to use someone, an hbcu to really tighten up the story to make sure were about to deliver a holiday hit. Lelund, he touches on something that weve explored here on street talk. There are a number of people who feel minority representation, you know, in the neat tar, you know theater, you know, is on the decline. Jason is in a good spot, but there should be ten other jasons other tyes. Your thoughts on that. I think there are some incredible writers in the industry, and i think that ty is in the classical theater of harlem is setting the example for what other producers need to do. We have some
Amazing Stories
that need to be heard. Give us the web site. The apollo theater. Org or ct of hnyc. Org. And, again, the dates are december 11th31st. Okay. My mom will be in town. Jason, lelund, ty. Thank you very much. Thes when we return toys other wireless carriers make families share data switch to tmobile now and get 4 lines with up 6gb each. Just 30 bucks a line and no sharing. Plus get the

Sergeant Joshua
wallace. Started back in 1947. Did you everty you would be carrying this torch when you first signed up . Not at all. This is a unique experience for me, and i enjoy it. How did it come about, josh . In 1947, a marine named major bill hendrix, reservist in los angeles, california, his wife gave him a doll wanting him to deliver it to a child in need. In doing so, he felt the joy and brought that back to his unit, and the marine corps adopted it the next year. Thats so awesome. We love you all, and we thank you so much for the service that you do every day, but just knowing this tradition even when i was a kid, you know, we would get excited, you know, just to take something there, because our church, you know, when i was growing up did this in virginia. But for people who may be unfamiliar or need to be reconnected, what types of toys well, right now we tend to have gaps in older boy and girls. Because who knows how to shop for an older girl these days . Theyre difficult. [laughter] yeah, good luck with that. We accept any range. All the way to 14, sir. How does it hit you when you see the child come up and drops the toy off, hands it to you, tell me about the impact. What it does to you. It fills me with joy, being able to receive those toys and speaking to the children, their excitement over whos going to get em and theyre talking to you a about how much they love this g. I. Joe, and they have one of their own, and now they get to share that with somebody else. Let me ask you, juan, were in this age now where everything is, like, digital. Youve got all these electronic, sophisticated toys. Are those types of toys okay to bring, or is that, you know, a little bit tough . You prefer, like, the plush shi and the things . You tell me. Well, we absolutely accept them. We get laptops, tablets, and we my personal preference, i love lincoln logs, but like you said, its a new era. You liked the lincoln logs, really . Absolutely. [laughter] i had a stretch armstrong that me and my cousins tried to go across the living room once, and it ended badly. I dont even know if they make those anymore. If people are interested in participating, where are the displays or the sents, dropoffs . Absolutely. Toys for tots nyc. Org. We have a list of all the public job sites, and their listed by zip code. Stay safe. Thank you, sir. Your service. All right. When we come back, as you decorate your
House Holiday
season, its important to be mindful of your pets. When wer oh no. under his breath hey man hey peter. unenthusiastic oh. Ha ha ha joanne . Is that you . Its me. You dont look a day over 70. Am i right . R jingle jingle. If youre peter pan, you stay young forever. Its what you do. If you want to save fifteen percent or more on car insurance, you switch to geico. You make me feel so young. Its what you do. You make me feel so holiday deck rightses may make your home merry and bright, but you weight to make sure your pets dont find their way into here with us now is dr. Taylor truitt, doctor of veterinary medicine, and you brought noah who, we understand, is a french bulldog. Yep. Its a pretty common breed here in the new york city area. Hes adorable. Yeah. So, and in this area manhattan and brooklyn, we come to your home and office. Lets talk about some holiday tips around the house. Yeah. The three main holiday hazards. I didnt even think about this. First one is food. We all know about the dogs that love to get on the counter, but fatty foods, theres an artificial sweetener called psi la toll, it can kill them. Be very careful about that. Another category is all the decor around the house. Youve got these beautiful poinsettias here. They cause a little gastrointestinal upset. If they eat on the leaves munch on the leaves. Okay. Cats are very drawn to these things. And its something people dont think about. They have these beautiful plants around, the animals are drawn to it, they chew on it, and next thing you know, you got a trip to the e. R so what should the parent do . Raise it up higher . Just be very cognizant about it. Because a cats going to get all over the place. Lilies, i would say if youve got cats that get into things, dont even bring them into the house. With point set thats, just keep them out of reach. You know some pets are going to be getting into things. Some dont. This dog is fabulous, but ive got a cat at home that would get into everything, she knocks it over, so poinsettias are just not an option for my family. I have a question, raisins . Raisins. Yeah, dogs are very allergic. They cant process them, and it can cause kidney failure. Raisins, grapes, macadamia nuts are another one that can cause upset. Treats away. From your critters. Theyre prone to putting on the pounds, so keep the fatty foods, the meats that can cause them to also develop a pancreas condition that can cause hospitalization, so just keep away from it. And then the ornaments. Yeah, lets talk about those. I had a labrador one year, and he decided to eat this
Christmas Ornament
with all these little stuck pins in it, and we had to surgically take out the ornament. To the dog it looks like a toy, a lot of fun. But to us it could perfect rate his perforate his intestines. It can be quite treacherous for them. Cats love all the ribbons and all the strings. Those, they can swallow it and also cause a foreign body, so just be aware of your pet. And if you see your pet plague around with things, take it away. Its like your kids. Certain things, some you cant. If you cant do it, take it away, dont let it be a problem. I would have never thought about that. Also when you were talking about, like, poinsettias and lilies, holly also . Yep. Holly can upset their stomach. Mistletoe. Fortunately, thats usually on the ceiling so you can get a smooch smooch. [laughter] but if there is a fall and they get into it, it could cause vomiting, diarrhea and make them quite ill. All right, now, a situation where you dont have a dog walker, you have to go to work, and were talking about temperatures, you know . Yes. You have to remember to set it to adjust to keep them warm, right . Yeah. Its common sense. If its too cold for you, its probably too cold for your pet. And if its cold outside, for this little guy, he ralphs in a sweater. Hes travels in a sweater. If you think you need a
Little Something
to put on, go ahead and do it. We have got also little dog boots. These are great because it protects their paws yeah, exactly. Running shoes. These are great, too, for older dogs if theyre having problems with arthritis so they dont tile. But slip them over their paw, and it protects them from the snow and the salt that comes with it so they dont get cracked paws and get infections. And is it true the snow burns the little pawses on the small side of it . Next time youre cooking and you get a little cut, put some salt in it. Really good point. I guess what youre saying, taylor, is bottom line a lot of it is just common sense, we think . You know, its common sense. I think its a little overrated these days, but common sense will get you pretty far in things. If you think its going to be a problem, its probably going to be a problem. Weve got a lot of information listed on our web site at vetset. Net, and weve got ways to keep your dog safe, weight management, and you can always just reach out to us. Wed be more than happy to talk to you. All right. One of the other questions that necessarily holiday but just in general, if its just a dog at home and just me, you know, the singlepet parent, are you supposed to leave a tv on or a radio . Whats the policy for that . Yeah. Theres a couple of things i like to have him listen to. Classical musics great for these guys. It doesnt drive them crazy or nothing . Apologies to the
Classical Music
people. I mean, you know . No, i wouldnt go with opera or anything like that, but keep it at a lower level just to have a little music on for them. The other thing is i think they like listening to talk radio. You can decide if you want to do a conservative spin so, you know, one direction or you could do your npr. The good news is talk radio, really . The chatter. Theyre not going to hear something and get all upset . Why the
Brooklyn Nets
are doing so bad . [laughter] no ones going to flip out . I think the talk radios nice for them because it was the human voice, the human chatter, and i just think its a nice background noise on. Television because there can be variations in pitches and sounds fending upon what you listen to so not the pet animal channel or manager like that. My friends in phoenix would put it on the animal channel. Is that good or bad . No, i think thats a nice decision for them, you know . One of my cats really likes watching television. And shell just sit down and hunker down and watch. Watch her head go this way and this way hes not ordering anything on qvc. No. [laughter] thank you so much. You going to give me a kiss before you leave here . No . Hes, like, im not much of a kisser. Youre just smelling me. I use listerine. All right, ill give you one. When we come back, healthy alternatives as you are making your way through those holiday parties and family gatherings. Holiday parties and family gatherings, there are treats but here with healthy alternatives, nutritionist and registered dietician
Keri Glassman
who is the founder of nutritious life as well as being a contributor to
Womens Health
magazine. Nice to meet you. Nice to meet you. Happy holidays. Same to you, my dear. Okay, we do tend to splurge, you know . This wont hurt that much. But thats not alwaysing the right thought process, right . No, because it does hurt. [laughter] now, listen, im all about indulging. Im definitely not one of those nutritionists who says, you know, you can never, ever indulge. I certainly like to indulge myself, and even at
Womens Health
magazine, we encourage indulging. But we want people to indulge in a conscious matter. And throughout this holiday season, you have to be mindful of when you do indulge. The problem with the holidays is that people often just pick and, you know, they pick and they take a bite here, a bite there, and they have an extra drink here. They are versioned out stressed out, lack of sheep. That can be super damaging. So if you just keep a few things in check, you can avoid that holiday weight gain. Tell us what we have here. One thing i always say is before the meal or before the event, its great to fill up on things like vegetables, because i know people are rolling their eyes saying, well, thats not so exciting, but were talking about avoiding the weight gain. And things like vegetables, obviously, loaded with fiber and water volume. If you want to bring a dish, the thing that is killer with most of these is those dips that are so loaded with fat usually. Here i have a dip thats a beet dip, so its basically just beets and yogurt. So not only is it not bad for you beets . Yeah, canned or steamed. Theyve been shown to help prevent certain types of cancer, and theres lots of fiber, so theyre good for your digest ty system digestive system. It makes the vegetables tasty, and youre doing something good for you. Thats a dip working for you not against you. I like beets, but i would have never thought to have mixed it with is that lowfat yogurt . I used regular wholefat yogurt, onion powder,
Garlic Powder
and olive oil. Its great for you. Okay. This one is a staple in my family, deviled eggs. How can you make a healthy deviled egg . Okay. So many people think definitelied eggs, theyre devilish, theyre bad for me. They get a bad rap. But we also know that the yolk of the egg has come full circle. People are loving that yolk again, and it is good for you. Its loaded with nutrients. So its got the fat soluble vitamins in there, and we know the white, of course, has the protein. So this healthier deviled egg is so simple. All of these dish cans here, so easy and fast to make. All you do is hard boil the eggs, scoop out that yellow, powder,
Garlic Powder
, cayenne and dijon, use yogurt or mayo, i used a lowfat yogurt in this case. Sprinkle on a little bit of the paprika and some clives, awesome, great protein, will help cut your hunger for the rest of the meal. You talk about this one while i sample this one. Okay. Now this one, these are called pumpkin pie bites. So we all know that pumpkin pie is a better choice than

Brooklyn Nets are doing so bad .
Keri Glassman who is the founder of nutritious life as well as being a contributor to
Womens Health magazine. I certainly like to indulge myself, and even at
Womens Health magazine, we encourage indulging. I used regular wholefat yogurt, onion powder,
Garlic Powder and olive oil. All you do is hard boil the eggs, scoop out that yellow, powder,
Garlic Powder, cayenne and dijon, use yogurt or mayo, i used a lowfat yogurt in this case. Sprinkle on a little bit of the paprika and some clives, awesome, great protein, will help cut your hunger for the rest of the meal. You talk about this one while i sample this one. Okay. Now this one, these are called pumpkin pie bites. So we all know that pumpkin pie is a better choice than
Something Like a pecan pie thats almost twice the amount of calories. But if you want to take that pumpkin love a step further, these individual bites here, all they are the crust right here is wheat germ, flax seed and just a little bit of ginger snap cookies. So super loaded with nutrients. And then the actual pie part right here is just pumpkin, just canned pumpkin with, again, a little bit of yogurt. Yogurts getting a lot of love in this thing here. Little bit of yogurt and some spices. And then right here we have a little topping. You can use it as a dip can i borrow your spoon . Give it back. Ill give it back to you. But this is yogurt with a little bit of maple syrup. Just put it right there like that, you can top it or use it as a dip. Again, another way to get in some nutrition and keep it lower in calorie, healthy, loaded with nutrients. So tell me about your book. I have a few different books. Right now i have a couple different ebooks online, nutritiouslife. Com, and check out why cant i drop the weight . I should read that. You can check that out. And the last thing before we go, for people who, you know, cocktails are always there. There are also alternatives to making, like, a regular cocktail versus, i mean, a healthy one versus a regular one, right . Absolutely. I know diet tonic has been the rage for a while now. What i usually tell people, choose the nights that are most important for you to drink. Sometimes theres an event where half an hour, skip that night of drinking. Choose the nights that are important and then cut the drinks in half by starting with
Something Like a seltzer water even in a stem glass, you feel every other drink. Drink can, then water, drink then water. Thatll cut it down right away. Thank you so much.
