It is a number that keeps increasing year after year. Women who we are told typically start in their 20s with and then when the pills get more expensive switch to heroin and cant get off. When i was pregnant i would use and i would bawl my eyes out because i felt guilty. Reporter she started drinking at age 10 and then moved to pot and then pills and their heroin. In my soul i wanted to stop and i didnt know how. Reporter she did the dance of the addict, getting clean and then relapsing over and over. And then getting pregnant with a lot of people, they dont understand why it is so hard for a mother to remain sober. They think because you have kids that it should be the easiest thing in the world. Thats not the case. I guarantee you most mothers out there go to bed every night crying and regretting everything they had done that day. Reporter she decided to get help because she had seen babies go through the torture of withdrawal hours and days after want that for her little girl. Overwhelming. You cant breathe guilt because as a mother you love your children. Reporter i reached out to clevelands hospitals for statistics on babies born uh detected to opiates. At the Cleveland Clinic in 201363 babies were born addicted and 74 the next year and 82 the year after that. At metro, 74 babies were born uh districted in 2013. Year we are told metro is on track to see 140 babies born addicted to opiates. Thats compared to 7 metro saw in 2002. I would say we have gone from a handful of babies to 3 to 4 of the babies being born dependent. The rise in addictive moms related to the rise in young women abusing prescription pain medications and heroin. The affects on their babies can be devastating. As the drugs from the babies get jittery and they get uncomfortable and their bellies start to cramp and they can get diarrhea and shaky and they get a high pitched cry that sounds like sad little people. You want to do everything to protect them and here you are harming them. I dont know. Thats hard. Babies born dependent have syndrome. We give them baby sized doses of morphine by mouth until they can wean down and we do it slowly over time. Gite metro has the motherchild dependancy program and aims to help pregnant women deal with the medical and emotional problems tied to their addictions. After the babys birth we are told that Child Services are always involved. How much and what happens depends on the individual mom and how she responded to her problem. The head of the program says while it is important to note that having an addictive parent ought techily raises a childs chances of becoming an addict, it is not a death sentence.
