Were flirting with record cold all across the region and the air is leading to this wintry in new york. People in buffalo digging out. In much of the country it is feeling more like the dead of winter than november. Good evening, im chris may. Im jessica dean. Lets get right out to meteorologist kathy orr on the cbs3 sky death of kathy, how low will these temperatures go. Talking about record cold and if we dont at least tie these records or go below them well be within a degree, thats how cold its going to be. Were talking about weather feeling like its more like an extremely cold january day than november. So, were talking about weather thats coming a couple months early. Take a look at storm scan3. Clear skies here but you mention that lake effect snow in buffalo new york, some spots picking up 6 feet of snow already there. Current winds out of the west and theyre sustained between 10 and 20 miles an hour. That persistent wind here is making it feel very cold. Will it stay dry. In the poconos feels like five below, philadelphia 13 and in allentown feels like its 10. Even standing on the sky deck it feels like its below zero when that wind whips across your face. The low temperature tonight going for 20 degrees. That would tight record set back in 1936 but its not the coldest or the earliest we have reached 20. The earliest date was november 7th. That was back in 1962. So, tomorrow morning well have wind chills that will be below 5 degrees in the poconos. Wind chills below 10 in allentown, reading, berks county and lancaster and wind chills in the teens in philadelphia, through south jersey and even down the shore wind chills between 15 and 20. So, were talking about another brutally cold morning. The winds will be less but the temperatures will be colder. One more bitter day. Then a late week blast of cold. Then well warm it up but it will get wet. I think well take that tradeoff now that weve had an appetizer of the winter season. Well talk about that warmup in the seven day when i join you inside. Investigators are looking hard to find the cause of this fouralarm fire at the Columbus Farmers Market. The flames ripped through the building there. Smoke obviously could be seen for miles. The market is a popular landmark on route 206 in springfield township, burlington county. Tonight Eyewitness News reporter Todd Quinones shows us the damage and the loss. Reporter the timing of the fire is terrible. Thanksgiving is one of the busiest times of year here and as flames shot through the roof shop owners could only watch and hope their businesses didnt burn. We walked up from the wawa and we just are waiting to see whats going on. Reporter Building Four of the Columbus Farmers Market complex off route 206 was heavily damaged. Strong winds fanned the flames 150 firefighters battled the four alarm fire to keep it contained. Cold weather and winds were really a big issue on this. Give the fire a good head start once it started in there. Reporter indications are most business and shop owners in this section of the market have lost everything and with thank giving right around the corner affected shop owners are left scrambling. We dont know whats going going to transpire from the fire or everything. We have a location outside also. Reporter the market was closed for business on tuesday as normal and no one was injured. The fire marshal is investigating a cause of the fire which started just after 2 00. After another fire in the 70s, the fire chief says renovations to the market then helped protect it now from catastrophic damage. The building, it was built with fire walls in place which helped us tremendously to confine the fire to one section of the market. Reporter and what youre looking at right now, that is Building Four. It has extensive damage to it but immediately to the right, that is building five. You could see how that fire wall came into play as building five appears to be relatively okay. But still at this hour, exactly how many of these 65 Retail Stores located here inside the Farmers Market will be opened this weekend still is not clear. A woman is killed when her Station Wagon plumps into the Schuylkill River today. The volvo wagon traveled down hunting park avenue, crossed kelly drive, sparred through a wall and then went into the water. After about an hour, authorities pulled that wagon from the water. The 41yearold driver was still inside. She was pronounced dead at the scene. The damage to the car certainly hindered divers as they tried to recover it. They did their very best to get into the car but you can see how badly damaged that car was and that it went in nose first and it compressed the entire chassis of the car, so they tried very hard to get a door opened but it just wasnt possible. Its unclear right now why this happened but eyewitnesses do say the car was traveling at a high rate of speed. Eyewitness news news has learned exclusively tonight the philadelphia special victims unit is investigating a disturbing discovery inside a northeast philadelphia home. Police were called to the 2100 block of who worth street on november 7. They say they found 89 lying on a box spring malnourished and covered with bugs. She was taken to the hospital but passed away on saturday. 48 year old Jean Dombrowski was living with the woman and did have power of attorney. Shes facing serious charges in a case that stunned neighbors. I feel dirty cause i cant believe that people actually behave that way. You know, you hear about crap like that and you see it on tv and i always say to myself, geez, i dont know anybody like that. I didnt know i did. Dombrowski is currently being held on 2 million bail. Shes facing aggravated and simple assault as well as recklessly endangering another person and neglect of care charges. A surveillance camera catches a thief striking on a font porch in upper darby. Watch as a ups man drops off a box of toys. He rings the doorbell and sees a note to ring the packet so he takes off. Just a few minutes later a man in a red shirt carrying a child appears on the same porch and walks off with the box. And then these bums are perusing the neighborhoods and when they see it, they follow the trucks. And when the trucks drop it off, nine times out of 10 nobodys home because most of the people are working and then they walk away with the packages. Well, police tell us that they expect to see more of this kind of theft as the holidays approach. Tonight on Eyewitness News at 11 00 on cbs3 hear inclusively from the woman who had her package stolen and see some simple steps you can take to keep from becoming a victim. Well, major air bag recall could be expanding if the national Highway Traffic Safety Administration gets its way. They want the Takata Corporation to recall even more air bags, a recall that would cover the entire country. Cbs correspondent Danielle Nottingham shows us that could mean 20 million additional vehicles would be affected. Reporter the government now wants a nationwide recall of vehicles with front drivers side takata air bags. The devices can explode with too much force potentially sending shrapnel into the vehicle. The defect has been linked to at least five fatalities and dozens of injuries. Every day even when i look in the mirror i can still feel that piece inside. I have no idea to this day how i kept my eye. It was a miracle. Reporter the initial recall was limited to cars in high humidity areas like the gulf coast. But a recent incident in North Carolina prompted the call for an expansion. The National Recall would cover vehicles with takata air bags made before 2008 by ford, honda, chrysler, mazda and bmw. The acting head of the national highway Transportation Safety the board says takata has indicated it will not comply. Takatas initial response an unwillingness to move forward and frankly that is one of the reasons why were talking to all of you today because i believe that Everyone Needs to understand that takata needs to act. Reporter takata is already struggling to make Replacement Parts for the smaller regional recalls. The company promised to add two production lines by the start of next year to make more inflators. Danielle nottingham for Eyewitness News on the cw philly. Authorities in israel are on high alert tonight after terrorists storm a synagogue in jerusalem killing five people. It happened as dozens of worshipers gathered for morning prayers. Reports say it was carried out by two palestinian men armed with a gun and butcher knives. They were eventually shot and killed by police in a shootout. Among the victims was a rabbi who has family in lakewood new jersey. The world has lost a gentle scholar who never hurt a person in his life and wished well to everyone and he was taken from us while he was talking to god. Israel has vowed harsh retaliation. Prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu has already ordered the attackers homes be demolished. New at 10 oclock Septa Transit Police set up a creative sting trying to get back a womans stolen phone. The woman was riding the market frankford el when a thief snatched her phone from her hands and ran off. Detectives later called the phone and the man who answered offered to sell it back. Well, that man, a 20yearold from West Philadelphia allegedly showed up at a meeting with police and was then arrested. Ended up not being the person that stole the phone but was aware that the phone was stolen and offered it for sale to us for 80. And now hes looking at receiving stolen property. That same suspect was charged with possessing some 20 bags of marijuana as well. Detectives are working to track down the person who actually stole the phone. Central bucks West High School is replacing brian hensel. The decision follows an investigation into hazing. Hensel will continue teaching duties at the school and the suspension of assistant coaches from the team has been lifted. Their future involvement with the program, however, will be determined following the selection of a new head football coach. Pennsylvania gaming regulators award philadelphias second casino license and depending on who you talk to south philadelphia is the big winner or loser. Developers of the proposed live hotel and casino plan to build it near the stadium complex at packer and darien. The holiday inn that sits on the property will be refurbished and expanded. The developers and many residents say theyre thrilled but others say this project will hurt neighboring economies. Incredibly disappointed that the board didnt provide its reasoning or, you know, what facts they discerned from what has happened in Atlantic City. Weve had a lot of community support. If you can believe it the king of prussia mall is about to get even bigger. Sounds almost impossible but Eyewitness News reporter syma chowdhury gives us a first look at the big expansion plans. Reporter the second largest mall in the country is about to get bigger. The king of prussia mall plans to add more than 50 stores and restaurants. This is a really exciting project. I think linking the two retail projects. Reporter chopper three was over the mall to show how it is split between the court and plaza. This expansion will mean connecting both something shoppers have been wanting. Thats been a must have for quite sometime. I think anybody that shops king of prussia knows you cant remember if its at the court or if its at the plaza. Just making it one big space is certainly in the cards and a great thingism linda shine is a retail expert from wharton business school. She says regional malls like king of prussia continue to be successful and look to expand while neighborhood malls seem to have trouble maintaining foot traffic. Thats because of competition from mobile and online shopping. Some companies are as you know having more or less challenging times with the particularly with competition from e commerce. Reporter shine says malls need to embrace technology to attract shoppers. Such as smart mirrors, ways to be fitted with technology when you walk into a store. Reporter the king of prussia mall has started construction and many luxury retailers are expected to be added. The mall already brings in 1 billion in sales a year and the new expansion will add 100 million more. Something local officials want to hear. It means 800 new jobs. Its millions of new revenue. Reporter after the construction is completed, the mall will have more than 450 stores but it will still be the second largest mall in the u. S. Behind mall of america in minnesota. The one thing all of our eyewitness weather watchers have in common tonight, well, the cold and theyre saying brr, its a little bit too much too soon. Take a look at these temperatures around the area. First well start off in Atlantic City where tim says the temperature is 25, winds out of the west at eight. Another frigid night in store with the wind chill at 17 and low humidity. This air is so cold, it is so dry and that is why youre seeing those humidities so low. Lee is saying 19 degrees in coatesville. Bitter cold tonight. And lets take a look at some of the other spots across our region. Ocean city james is saying 27 in newark delaware were talking about 23 degrees. John is saying in newark temperatures are falling fast. Willow grove barbara is reporting 21 and in sellers burg, pa, keith says 19 degrees and falling fast. On storm scan3 were seeing the lake effect snow machine getting going to the south of buffalo. That persistent westsouthwesterly wind across the unfrozen lake, lake eerie creates a fetch. Its all of the distance that that cold wind can go across so you have the moisture, youll have the wind, you have that cold air and you just continue to make snow until that wind shifts and it is expected to shift tonight but right now in some spots expecting over 6 feet of snow. They already have 6 feet, could go to 7 feet by the time this ends. Just with this lake effect snow band. Right now were just seeing the cold from the same system. 25 degrees in philadelphia. Allentown 21. The poconos sitting at 14. We are not alone in the cold. Can consider this. All 50 states fell to freezing today, even in hawaii and some of the mountain tops not everywhere but at least one or two areas everywhere fell to freezing in each of our 50 statements its amazing. You can see the cold really hunkering down across the region. We peek with the cold air tomorrow morning. Still cold tomorrow afternoon. It begins to relax a little bit thursday but one more piece of this arctic air rotates through on friday. You can see the blue moving back into the region and after that, we see a bit of a break. As we look ahead to the eight to 14 day outlook you can see right here where you see the orange in the philadelphia area and south jersey, temperatures will go above normal finally by next week.
