Reporter good morning, reena and t. J. Harrison ford continues to be treated here at ucla medical center. We are not getting updates to his exact injuries or condition. We know from an eyewitness at the scene he had a head injury. We also know he is expected to survive. Harrison ford was breathe ing and conscious when he was pulled from the wreckage and rushed to the hospital. The pilot reported a loss of engine power and was attempting to return. This was the actors desperate mayday message moments before he crashed. Engine failure. Immediate return. Reporter 72yearold movie star was flying this vintage world war ii plane from Santa Monica Airport when according to his publicist the engine stalled forcing a crash landing on this golf course. This woman described what was there. Somebody then said at that point it is Harrison Ford. He was able to speak. He expressed that he was in pain which was no surprise. Im captain mill len yal yum falcon. Reporter Harrison Ford is best known and loved as Indiana Jones and hans solo but he said flying gave him a chance to establish another identity which he talked about with our own barbara walters. I love seeing the world from an airplane. Im in love with flying. Reporter and Harrison Fords son ben is with him in the hospital here. Hes been tweeting throughout the night saying his dad is battered but will be quote, okay. Reena, t. J. . Good news. We know that ford is actually an experienced pilot. Do we know about what happened yesterday . Well according to his publicist, he took off from the Santa Monica Airport by himself in this vintage plane and the engine stalled basically right after takeoff. This airport is adjacent, obviously to a golf course. He radioed right away. Tried to make a turn. The plan was to make an Emergency Landing but he didnt have time and put the plane down on the golf course. There was extensionive damage to the cockpit but he was able to survive. As we have been saying experienced pilot. Hes been doing this a while. If you do this long enough you probably have a couple of issues here and there. Hes had some close calls before. Hes had more issues than most one would think. He is also a helicopter pilot. He was in a helicopter accident many years ago with another aviator at the time. He said afterwards he just broke the helicopter. He was very cavalier about it and pointed out to people he is still flying and so is the other person. He was involved in an Emergency Landing situation in a small aircraft where he had to land because of a wind shear in nebraska. Will he keep flying now . Will his family allow him to keep flying. Well have to wait and see. That maybe the question. You are right. Ted, thank you so much. Lets stick with the plane theme, shall we. The east coast, another airplane accident this one Delta Airlines jet from atlanta skidded off the runway trying to land at new yorks La Guardia Airport them nose of the plane broke through a safety fence a few feet from the icy water. One passenger said it felt like a car fishtailing. The runway had just been plowed other pilots reported safe braking. One of the puzzlingment elements here is why the airplane veered off the runway wheen they had quite a bit of runway ahead
