In to take down a passenger. Why he took action. Good evening. And we begin tonight with the breaking developments in the race for the white house. What could be an allout war within the Republican Party brewing at this hour. Donald trump and what hes now saying about House Speaker paul ryan. And it all comes after another controversial headline just today. When a trump supporter gave donald trump his own purple heart, trumps answer, i always wanted to get a purple heart. This was much easier. And just a short time ago, trump declaring about the khan family, who lost their son at war, i dont regret anything. We begin with abcs tom llamas on the campaign trail. Reporter tonight, donald trump, who never saw combat, never served in the military, now has a purple heart. You know, something very nice just happened to me. A man came up to me, and he handed me his purple heart. Reporter but trump then saying this i said, man, thats, like, thats like big stuff. I always wanted to get the purple heart. This was much easier. Reporter the moment now shining a spotlight on trumps own military record. The republican nominee once touting his time in military school, saying, quote, i always thought i was in the military. But trump never made it to a battlefield. During vietnam, getting four college deferments, and then a fifth one. I had a minor medical deferment for feet, for a bone spur of the foot, which was minor. Reporter still today, a rare admission. But ive regretted not serving in many ways. Reporter it comes as trump is still tangling with the muslim family of a fallen u. S. Soldier. You have sacrificed nothing and no one. Reporter trump hitting back at the khan family, claiming he has sacrificed, as well. I think i have made a lot of sacrifices. I work very, very hard. Ive created thousands and thousands of jobs, tens of thousands of jobs, built great structures. Ive done ive had tremendous success. Those are sacrifices . Oh, sure. I think theyre sacrifices. Reporter today, eric trump, asked if his father should apologize to the khans. I think he has by calling them a hero. In terms of the one question whether youve made a sacrifice, i think my father has. Now, thats certainly not the ultimate sacrifice. Reporter eric trump adding this i think this is something that was honestly blown hugely out of proportion. Reporter but it was donald trump who kept tweeting about the khans four days after their convention appearance. And today, no regrets. I dont regret anything. I said nice things about the son. And i feel that very strongly. But of course, i was hit very hard from the stage. Reporter and from that iraqi war veteran, who gave trump his purple heart 100 , im behind him. I know other veterans that are behind him. Reporter but today, president obama putting pressure on republicans to denounce their nominee. If you are repeatedly having to say, in very strong terms, that what he has said is unacceptable, why are you still endorsing him . Reporter also today, an unscripted moment on the trail. Trump interrupted by a crying baby. Dont worry about that baby. I love babies. I love babies. I hear that baby crying. I like it. I like it. The moms rubbing around, like, dont worry about it, you know . Reporter bud then, just one minute later. Actually, i was only kidding, you can get the baby out of here. Thats all right. Dont worry. I think she really believed me that i loved having a baby crying while im speaking. Thats okay. That unscripted moment with the baby today. Tom llamas with us live tonight. Tom, back to the president for a moment. Who today said donald trump is, quote, unfit to be president. President obama then asking Republican Leaders today, why are you still endorsing trump . And have we heard from any key Republican Leaders tonight . Reporter david, that may have been the strongest attack yet from president obama on donald trump and the Republican Leadership. And, david, tonight, silence from gop leaders. Nothing from mitch mcconnell, nothing from speaker paul ryan, respond tock the president. David . Tom llamas leading us off tonight. Tom, thank you. Meantime, as i mentioned there at the top, there could very well be a war brewing within the Republican Party at this hour. Donald trump and House Speaker paul ryan, and tonight, just a short time ago, donald trump saying he is not ready to support paul ryan, whose own primary back home is now just one week from tonight. So, lets get right to jon karl, tracking it all tonight. Not ready to support paul ryan, just days to go. Reporter make no mistake, david, in politics, this is war. We remember how ryan and trump met earlier this year, to mend fences and how ryan, under pressure, endorsed trump, an endorsement hes had to defend over and over again. And this is how trump repays him. Bottom line here, could paul ryan lose back home because of this . Reporter well, look, this is a low turnout august primary. You have trump praising ryans opponent. There is zero reliable polling. The honest answer is, who knows . All right, jon karl, youll stay on this. Jon, thank you. And there is one more developing headline in the race for president before we move on here, and this one spells trouble for the democrats tonight. More heads rolling at the Democratic National committee, after the partys email was hacked. U. S. Authorities believing Russian Hackers were behind it, but its whats in those emails now leading to resignations. Party ceo amy daisy is out tonight, along with the partys chief finance officer and commune cases director. All three in those emails showing favoritism for Hillary Clinton over bernie sanders. The release of those emails already led to dnc chairperson congresswoman Debbie Wasserman schultz to resign from her post at the dnc. We move on now to the deadly bus crash on a california highway. This evening, authorities calling it catastrophic. The aerials tonight of that charter bus off the road, and slides down the middle there been a sign pole. Five passengers were killed. More than a dozen serious lly injured. And abcs Kayna Whitworth is in california. Reporter a desperate race for survivors. There is reported to be a bus with multiple ejections. Reporter so many traumatic injuries, First Responders reportedly ran out of tourniquets. The bus, nearly sliced in half by this highway sign. That pole went through the center of the bus and thats where the injuries were sustained. Reporter it was en route from mexico to washington state, crashing near fresno around 3 30 a. M. 30 passengers onboard. At least five killed. Tonight, the driver, 57yearold Mario David Vasquez remains in the hospital with serious injuries. He told me that he was very careful because he wanted to come home and see us. Reporter overhead highway signs are designed to not break away, because if they do, they can pose a hazard to traffic. In 2011, 15 people were killed in the bronx after this bus hit an overhead sign. David, this is the bus companys l. A. Office. They have a satisfactory safety raiding, yet, we found multiple citations, some of which led to drivers and buses being pulled off the road. The ntsb is now investigating. David . Kayna, thank you so much. We turn next here to an alarming headline tonight involving the allout air war against zika, set to begin just hours from now in florida. The cdc already warning pregnant women to avoid a certain part of florida, and now comes serious questions over whether the spraying will actually work. So far, regular spraying has not stopped the threat from the mosquitos that carry the virus. Tonight, Florida Health officials have announced a 15th person has contracted zika right here in the u. S. Dr. Besser with the map of the states bracing next after florida, but first, abcs eva pilgrim, where they are spraying tomorrow morning. Reporter tonight, the fullon assault against zika, ramping up the battle. Taking it to the sky, that aerial spraying in miami beginning as soon as the morning. The countys mayor saying they are up against a tough enemy. These mosquitos are proving to be difficult to get rid of. Mosquitos have always been difficult to get rid of. Reporter this is the frontline of the attack on mosquitoes, miami tripling the number of inspectors on the ground. But even still, people hiring private contractors to kill mosquitos on their property. Melissa welcher is due to give birth later this month. Shes taking every precaution, wearing long sleeves and pants. Its very warm out. Just want to make sure that im just, like, staying protected. Reporter now that 15 patients have contracted the virus, this clinic in the hot zone is stepping up who gets tested for zika. As of yesterday, were testing every pregnant woman that comes through my desk. Reporter david, doctors warning those who contracted zika, telling them to long sleeves and pants. If they get bitten, they could spread the virus. David . Eva pilgrim with us again tonight. Eva, thank you. I want to get right to dr. Richard besser, back with us this evening. Rich, you were telling us, there are real concerns now over whether this spraying will truly be effective, given the type of mosquito were deeming with. Reporter thats right. What we hear from experts in Mosquito Control is that area spraying works well for highflying moss tee coe. The mosquito that spreads zika lives in containers around your home. I do want to show everyone at home that map again, and rich, you can see there in the red, the parts of the country where they are concerned that we could see these headlines next. How quickly is this expected to spread, and if there are questions about whether the spraying will work, is this simply about being vigilant with repellant . Reporter david, its just a matter of time. Theres so much travel back and forth between the u. S. And countries where zika is spreading wildly. With the mosquito in those states, we are going to see more clusters like were seeing in miami. And it does come down to people using personal protection, using that repellant. Dr. Besser, who will stay on this for us. Rich, thank you, again. Next, to the extreme weather right now. We are tracking a Tropical Storm tonight, and new flash flood warnings in this country, after those dramatic flood rescues we showed you this week already. That human chain. The flash flood watches for places like arizona, i just saw a report of a swift water rescue. So, these numbers and accidents are coming in. Please do not drive into water. Especially in the areas that are getting some of the bulls eyes of two to three inches. And then, that Tropical Storm now has a name. Earl. Reporter the first sign anything is wrong at this houston Convenience Store an earsplitting gunshot into the ceiling. Employees dive for safety in a small room as a gunman storms over the counter. As soon as we heard the gunshot, i mean, our coworker, they just jumped into the booth and locked the door. Reporter they quickly lock the door to the checkcashing booth, protecting themselves behind bulletproof glass, with all the money inside. The three gunmen try desperately to get in, banging on the door, riddling the place with bullets. People who are outside assumed that we were dead because they heard so many shots fired. Reporter in the back, one customer gets a shotgun pointed at his head. He offers up his wallet, and the gunman leaves him alone. That gunman then tries to get in the booth himself with at least three blasts from his shotgun and a few kicks. But the door holds. They came in like crazy. Theyre shooting everywhere, bullets flying all over, believe me. Reporter their mission a failure, the three gunman take off in this suv. Nobody inside was hurt. Somebody trying to get easy money, instead of working hard. And thats what we do here. Reporter those would had be robbers tonight are still on the loose. Clayton sandell, abc news, los angeles. Reporter tonight, just six weeks after star trek actor Anton Yelchin was killed by his 2015 jeep grand cherokee, his grieving parents announcing theyre filing a wrongful death lawsuit against Fiat Chrysler, the makers of the jeep. Many may, Fiat Chrysler sent a letter to jeep owners, saying the cherokee may suddenly roll away if the engine is left running and the driver fails to put the vehicle in park. So if theres Something Better than warfarin, im going for it. Eliquis. Eliquis reduced the risk of stroke better than warfarin, plus it had significantly less major bleeding than warfarin. Eliquis had both. Thats what i wanted to hear. Dont stop taking eliquis unless your doctor tells you to, as stopping increases your risk of having a stroke. Eliquis can cause serious and in rare cases fatal bleeding. Dont take eliquis if you have an artificial heart valve or abnormal bleeding. While taking eliquis, you may bruise more easily. And it may take longer than usual for any bleeding to stop. Seek immediate medical care for sudden signs of bleeding, like unusual bruising.
