WPVI ABC World News With David Muir January 6, 2017

Tonight. Set to strike much of the south, and the east, then the system moving north overnight. And a final goodbye. The names bidding farewell to a famous mother and her daughter. Good evening. And we begin tonight with the horror that played out this afternoon inside the baggage claim at the ft. Lauderdale airport. Authorities say a passenger, an army vet, pulling out a gun and suddenly firing. Five people were killed. Several more rushed to the hospital. Passengers got out of the terminal, many running in fear, right onto the tarmac, hiding where they could, others, trapped on planes. And within minutes, a powerful show of force. The fbi, local law enforcement, sweeping across the airport. Frightened passengers were their hands in the air. Tonight, we have new reporting on the lone gunman, and the passengers still stuck on that tarmac. We begin with the moments right after the shooting. Tonight, the cries of the passengers and loved ones just moments after it was over. They were the ones who saw it all. The gunman in terminal two, walking into the baggage claim and opening fire. This woman describing what she saw. Casings were flying all around us. Reporter one of the victims lying in a pool of blood. She was among the five who were killed. Other passengers and family members holding onto one another. Shots fired, downstairs. Lower level inside, we have a subject with a gunshot to the head. Reporter it was 12 55 p. M. , the first reports, the first calls to 911. Gunfire erupting. The shooter had loaded his gun, and was firing indiscriminately. Men, women, anyone in front of him. At least eight rushed to area hospitals. A father, michael starobinsky, took this Photo Looking out the window of the terminal. A man who had just been shot brought outside. The bloodstained sidewalk. The Woman Holding up his arm. The father who took the photo. I heard a popping noise and somebody says, shots fired. I grabbed two of my children, ran outside. Im looking at a man and a woman, a man bleeding profusely and a woman who just said, help, help paramedics then rushing to his side and racing him out on a stretcher. The airport was put on lockdown, all exits blocked off. Some passengers stranded in planes on the tarmac with little information. What happened here right now, i dont know what just happened here at our terminal right now. Other planes rushing passengers off to safe zones on the tarmac. And hundreds were evacuated from inside the terminal, down stairwells, taken outside, too. There were hundreds standing together. Many were sent to the perimeter of the airport, their hands in the air as authorities swept the scene. For a time, there were reports of more gunfire possible in another terminal or parking garage. S. W. A. T. Teams racing down to knock down those reports. Late today, saying they believe it was just one gunman, one scene. Still, terrified passengers racing across the tarmac. Taking cover behind cars. This photo captured by a witnesses as authorities appear to take the suspect away. Tonight, authorities believe the suspect just 26 years old. We were all waiting on the tarmac, a side door opened about 20 feet away, with two security guards holding a man, handcuffed. Like a skinny, lightskinned man with dark hair. They led him away, and then two minutes later, fbi agents. Reporter florida senator bill nelson telling me onair that the suspect was carrying a military i. D. It was found on him. His name is Esteban Santiago. Sources telling abc news he arrived in ft. Lauderdale as a passenger, traveling from anchorage, alaska, through minneapolis, then to ft. Lauderdale. Legally checking his unloaded gun and separate ammunition into his baggage. After getting off the plane, a Broward County commission her telling us, he went into a bath wro room where he loaded a bathroom and then began firing. Then, laying on the ground until police came and arrested him. We have five individuals who have lost their lives. We still have people fighting for their lives in our hospitals. Whoever is responsible will be held accountable to the full extent of the law. Floridas governor just a short time ago. I want to bring in victor aquendo. And victor, i understand there are still passengers out on that tarmac . Reporter hours later, david, and those passengers are still out there. So, right now, airport officials are doing everything they can to make them more comfortable. Were told they are bringing out water, some food, other supplies. Even some portable toil lets, just to make this day go by a little more smoothly, make it just a little more comfortable for them. Back where i am here, just about less than a mile away from the airport, what weve seen here is hundreds of passengers, some of them without their luggage, some carrying their luggage, others who have been trampled in this process, some now wearing shoes who have made their way, this long walk from the airport down this road, where theyre now being picked up by either ubers, buses or taxis. This long day still has not ended for so many people. Victor oquendo tonight, thank you. And late today, while we were on the air, i spoke with united statesne eyewitnesses. We begin here with diane haggerty, working in the baggage claim where he then opened fire. I was behind the kiosk. I had a perfect picture of him coming and walking up and down, shooting the people. I mean, i just cant believe that that was possible. So, diane, you were at a kiosk in what part of the airport . Were you in the baggage claim area . Yes, thats where he shot. In the baggage claim. He shot everybody. We heard the noise. We thought it was we thought it was firecrackers, wise kids were doing and then we looked down, because i knew where he came in, and we looked again and we saw him with the gun going up and down. Yeah. Everybody said, get out, get out. He did nothing but swing the gun and shoot. People started yelling and screaming and running towards any exit to get out of there. He had a. 9 millimeter gun, went through a couple dozen rounds. He came through door two, he went towards the right, towards carousel two and three and started randomly shooting people. No rhyme, no reason. By the time he was done shooting, he was basically threw the gun down on the ground and was laying spread eagle, facedown on the ground before any officers were really much in the area whatsoever. Thats the first time weve heard a description like that. He was down on the ground . Oh, yeah. He threw the gun on the ground and he laid on the ground facedown, spread eagle. The eye witnesses right there in the airport. And you heard senator nelson tell me earlier the suspect was found with a military i. D. On him. It was not long after, a clearer portrait began to emerge of the suspect. And it turns out tonight, he was known to the fbi. Heres our chief investigative correspondent brian ross. Reporter Esteban Santiago remains a mystery tonight to federal authorities, still not sure what led this 26yearold army veteran to allegedly go on his murderous rampage. But some of his social media accounts are now raising concerns. He was born in new jersey but grew up in puerto rico. Santiagos instagram profile page has photos of him in uniform as a member of the Army National guard in puerto rico and alaska. He was deployed to iraq for a year and honorably discharged four months ago. Santiagos profile statement reads, heres to finding whether or not your mission on earth is finished. If youre still alive, it isnt. Federal authorities tonight tell abc news that santiago recently received Mental Health treatment, after he showed up at the anchorage, alaska, fbi office, claiming the government was forcing him to watch isis videos. Agents described him as incoherent. Tonight, fbi agents and police are at santiagos last known address at this trailer park in anchorage. And outside the home of his relatives in union city, new jersey. Trying to decipher the troubled life of Esteban Santiago, and what brought him to the airport in ft. Lauderdale with a gun. Brian ross with us here tonight on this fastmoving investigation. And federal officials looking at this as a possible terror investigation . Reporter that hasnt yet been decided. His rants about isis back in anchorage, it seems increasingly likely the joint Terror Task Force will take over this investigation at some point soon. So, this could take a turn. Brian ross tonight, thank you. I want to bring in pierre thomas, because pierre, when people watching hear that he was known to the fbi, boarded that plane, checking his gun in his luggage and no red flags . Reporter david, sources say as far as they know, and its early, the suspect was not on any terrorism watch list or nofly list. It appears the suspect was views as having Mental Health issues. David, were in a gray area here, because there appears to be a reference to isis, though apparently the man was incoherent when he spoke to the fbi. This raises questions about authorities as airports should be notified when a person who may have Mental Health issues is flying with a gun and ammunition in checked baggage. David, has another gap in the system been exposed . Many more questions on this front. Pierre, thank you. You heard pierre report the shooter checked his weapon in, perfectly legal, before his flight. Many now asking, what is the prosee jurd when flying with guns . Abcs david kerley covers aviation. Reporter somewhere tonight, someone is checking a firearm for a flight and it is perfectly legal. While the tsa confiscates hundreds of weapons at checkpoints in carryons, a gun owner who followed the rules can travel with a weapon as checked baggage. Which Esteban Santiago apparently did. The right way is, you take your firearm and you pack it at home. Reporter tsa requires that the weapon is unloaded. It has to be packed in a hard case, plastic, wood or met that must be looked. And then when you go to check in for your flight, you got to check in at the counter and declare that you have a firearm. Reporter but its not just the unloaded weapon thats allowed in that case. Ammunition magazines and a small ammount of small arms ammunition which is boxed can also be carried. Checking a weapon in luggage compartment is a common practice. But neither the tsa nor the Airline Association could tell us, david, how many weapons travel each year. David kerley on this, our thanks to you and the entire team tonight. In the meantime, we turn to other news, breaking at this hour. And after weeks of taking aim at the u. S. Intelligence community, president elect donald trump in the same room with intelligence officials, being briefed into their investigation into russias hacking of the u. S. Election. Just hours before that briefing today, mr. Trump calling it a, quote, political witch hunt. Tonight, what the president elect said after that highstakes meeting. Abcs cecilia vega at trump tower. Reporter president elect donald trump behind closed doors today, face to face for the first time with the highest levels of the nations intelligence community. That classified meeting coming just days after he publicly bashed their findings that russia tried to interfere with the election. I also know things that other people dont know, and, so, they cannot be sure of this situation. Reporter what do you know that other people dont know . Youll find out on tuesday or wednesday. Reporter tuesday and wednesday came and went with no announcement about what trump really knows. Again and again, trump refusing to accept the findings of 17 u. S. Intelligence agencies. They have no idea if its russia or china or somebody it could be somebody sitting in a bed some place. Reporter zwlus morning, in an interview with the new york times, he called it a witch hunt. Hours later, trump sat across from the director of the national intelligence, and the hesd of the fbi, cia and nsa, as they presented their explosion i report, conclude, quote russian president Vladimir Putin ordered an influence campaign in 2016 aimed at the u. S. President ial election. To undermine public faith in the Us Democratic process, denigrate secretary clinton, and harm her electability and potential presidency. We further assess putin and the russian government developed a clear preference for president elect trump. Parts of that report declassified tonight, say russia aspired to help president elect trumps election chances when possible by discrediting secretary clinton and publicly contrasting her unfavorably to him. After the meeting, trump releasing a statement conceding russia, china and others are consistently trying to hack a variety of american institutions, including the dnc, but still not publicly accepting russias interference in the election. Trump say, there was absolutely no effect on the outcome of the election including the fact that there was no tampering whatsoever with voting machines. The investigation opening deep wounds between trump and the intelligence community. Theres a difference between skepticism and disparagement. Reporter but in what is perhaps an olive branch, trump now calling his meeting with Intelligence Leaders constructive. And so lets get right to cecilia vega, live at trump tower tonight. And the president elect now says that hes ordered an immediate review of how the u. S. Can combat Cyber Attacks . Reporter david, he says hes going to appoint an Advisory Team to give him that information, how to impact the Cyber Attacks within 90 days of taking office. David . Cecilia, thank you. And it was president obama, of course, who commissioned that intelligence report. The president now weighing in, during an exclusive interview late today with our george stephanopoulos. Bottom line, this time, Vladimir Putin got what he wanted. Well, look, i think that what is true is that the russians intended to medel and they meddled. Ill be honest with you. One of the things i am concerned about is the degree to which weve seen a lot of commentary lately where there are republicans, or pundits, or cable commentators, who seem to have more confidence in Vladimir Putin than fellow americans, because those fellow americans are democrats. That cannot be. Does that include the president elect . Well, what i will say is t t that and i said this right after the election we have to remind ourselves, were on the same team. Vladimir putin is not on our team. Georges exclusive with the president late today, and his full interview with president obama on this week sunday morning with george.
