And when gunfire stopped, Six Police Officers were shot, three of them were dead, and the gun man, a former marine, who was also killed in the cross fire. It is sunday night im brian taff, the big story on action news tonight is another deadly encounter where police appear to have been the target. Tonight we have learn that the gunman was an iraqi war veteran. It happened in baton rouge this morning as a city gripped by racial tension in recent days. It was there thalitone sterling was shot and killed by Police Two Weeks ago, and then a event that fanned the blames of the racial discord across the country and set into motion two shootings which has seen several Police Officers slain. Action News Reporter Christie Ileto live from the Satellite Center with the very latest tonight, christie. Reporter were learning more about the three officers shot to death. One of them posted a heartfelt message on his Facebook Page about what is happening across the country last week. Not knowing that on line, those would be his final words. Baton rouge officers jackson final Facebook Post is now going vei will rally with. In an excerpt his last words were, i swear to god i love this city but i wonder if the city loves me n uniform i get nasty hateful looks, and out of uniform some consider me a threat. Jackson, brad, and Matthew Gerald are three officers found dead. When they were met with hail of gunfire just before 9 00 sunday morning. And police were responding to reports of a man crested in black, armed with a rifle, walking down the street. Three other officers were injured. We believe that the person that shot and killed our officers, that he is a person that was shot and killed the scene. Reporter state police assured the public there was in longer an active shooter. We know gunman gavin long was a former marine discharged in 2010. Regardless of motive, these deaths of these three brave officers under scores the danger that Police Across the country confront every single day. We as a nation have to be loud and clear that nothing justifies violence a begins Law Enforcement. Reporter president obama who has spoken weekly in the last month about the fall of the relationship between Police Departments and the community, were quick to tell the nation to temper their word. We dont need inflammatory rhetoric, we dont need careless accusations, thrown around to score political points. Reporter baton rouge is still reeling from the shooting that killed sterling and promptly touched off protests across the country but it is like officer jackson said in his final message to the world, these are trying times, and please, you do not let hate infect your heart. And after what is unfolding in baton rouge Philadelphia Police confirmed their officers will continue riding around in pairs, in their patrol cars. Reporting live from the sat center, Christie Ileto for channel six action news, brian. Christie, thank you. This afternoon a crowd gathered at International Baptist church in lansdowne delaware county. They have prayed for the Police Officers in baton rouge as well as for that community which has been rock by the tragedies also on the mind of this group tonight those suffering in nice, france. The action cam was there tonight as dozens of people took part in this black lives matter protest, and they marched from north philadelphia to center city. The Police Worked to close down streets as they marched to ensure everyones safety. No arrests were made. With all of that anxiety as a backdrop this years political process enters its next phase. The Republican National Convention Kicks off in cleveland, ohio tomorrow, no doubt, the steaks, like tensions are very high. We have Live Team Coverage tonight, action news Sarah Bloomquist is in downtown cleveland where delegates arrived but we will begin with action news anchor jim gardner leading our coverage there this week, jim. Thanks, brian. You said it, it is safe to assume that the shooting in baton rouge is escalating the tension level among Law Enforcement here in cleveland, clearly nobody wants cleveland to become another dallas or another baton rouge, and police here seem responding any provocation with substantial number. A dozen women adequating Cleveland Assange war i city and brought out 50 police today, just to make sure. But, with dal ace and baton rouge painfully fresh in everybodys mine, various segments of the community here in cleveland are working very hard, to bring together together this week. Action News Reporter Sarah Bloomquist is live, and sarah, you have more on that. Reporter jim, that is right. Delegate arrived here in cleveland today the people of this city wanted to send them a message. They march in the name of peace and love. Meantime we did catch up with those local delegates from pennsylvania, new jersey, and they are ready to get this convention underway. They wore tshirt with the word stand for love on the front and that is exactly what the people of cleveland did today. Hundreds of those gathered on the Hope Memorial bridge a span that links east and west side to this city in the name of peace, unity and love. To show our love, for cleveland, and all over the world. So were here together, just to support peace and love. Peace and love should rule out the hate. Reporter does it warm your heart to see turnout. Yes. Reporter Police Officers received applause as they crossed the bridge. Then large crowd stood hand and hand in silence. Have of course, we have heard about potential things happening here in cleveland. It is so important that were standing for love, standing and saying no. We will stand up to the fear, hatred, that creates violence in our country, our world and our cities. Stop, stop, stop. Reporter elsewhere including delegat from pennsylvania and new jersey arrived in cleveland. They are exited to get their convention started and nominate donald trump for president. Is there a tremendous amount of energy. There is a lot of excitement. I have not seen a candidate for president and this is my seventh Convention Since Ronald Reagan that has created so much excitement among republicans. You can just feel what is happening here. Very excited to be here. I think it is a wonderful event for donald trump and mr. I think that this is an exciting time for our country actually for us to come together as a republican party. Reporter and tonight the delegates did celebrate with a big welcome party, fire works, on the lake here and waterfront behind me. It was first of what will likely be four more nights of parties after they have completed their business on the convention floor. Live from cleveland, ohio im Sarah Bloomquist for channel six action news, jim, back to you. Thanks, sarah typically National Political convention, is fun to sianni talk to other political officials here but part of the big story at this Political Convention are all of the luminaries who wont be here. Never seen anything quite like this before, former president george hw bush, wont be here. Nor will his son, bush, 43. The last two republican nominees mitt romney and john mccain, arent coming. The governor of the host state of ohio, and former rival john kasich will pass. One of the no shows, pennsylvania senator pat toomey who is in a tough reelection fight with democrat katie mcginty. And it goes on. Pennsylvania congressman from our area, ryan costello, no, mike fitzpatrick, no. Joseph pits, not coming. And then there are the representatives charlie dent of the Lehigh Valley and pat meehan in delaware county. Wont be here. Mr. Dent, is this all about trump. I will not get out there. I feel very strongly that the incendiary comment made over these many months, combined with a lack of policy specificity, you know, have concerned me. I will never support Hillary Clinton under any circumstances but i have not been able to cross that bridge in terms of supporting the presumptive nominee. Do you up doors donald trump for president of the you had. Im not currently ready to do that. Im hoping to be able to hear more. I will not be supporting Hillary Clinton. My guess, he has the skill set. Whether he takes that and turns that into a temper. I want to see. Im concerned about some of the rhetoric now and not particularcally pleased up to this point. This convention has other problems because of no shows, corporate no shows. Motorola, jp morgan chase, wells fargo, apple, they are part of the contingent that donated big bucks to the g. O. P. Convention four years ago. This year, they and many others have scaled back or are keeping their cash in their pockets. The right now, reports say that the rnc is six milliondollar short. Now, the rnc has released the latest list of speakers this week and in what donald trump said would be a show biz convention, those his words, it looks like the best known celebrity will be Willie Robert son of duck dynasty fame and scott baio of happy days and joan i love chaci. New Jersey Governor Chris Christie will speak here tuesday night during the week, that may afford donald trump his best opportunity to show america he is a serious candidate, a likable candidate and a candidate who can predict and who can protect americans in a uncertain and dangerous world. Brian, the Convention Begins tomorrow afternoon at 1 30. Dont forget scott b aio also in charles in charge. Thanks very much, jim. Jim and czar i will be in cleveland until thursday with gavel to gavel coverage of the Republican National convention. Tune in for their live reports throughout the week.
