Septa is appealing a federal judges ruling that ordered philadelphias Transit System to put controversial ads on its buses. Now those ads include a photograph of adolf hitler and a former arab leader. Action News Reporter john rawlins live at 69th street station in upper darby. Good morning john. Reporter the issue is free speech here. It can be controversial unpopular it can be down right vial. Septa is a transit agent zits also a state authority. Many of its buses are rolling billboards. Last year it decided there was a message did it not want to convey. This is a sample of what septa did not want to have on the sides of its vehicles. It reads islamic jew hatred its in the koran. The photograph is hitler and a nazi collaborator. The Organization Behind the ad, the American Freedom defense initiative, the afdi describes itself as a human rights group. Foes call it antiislamic. Whatever the case it argued septa a state agency had no right to reject its message. A philadelphia federal judge agreed. Were very pleased with his ruling. It was the proper ruling. Reporter we reached afd attorney robert news via skype. To be thinking about these issues not within the frame of political correctness. To understand their those islamists in the middle east are using the koran to justify their violence against jews, to justify their violence against christians. We do believe though, that the ads of themselves are part of a campaign to smear muslims. Reporter jacob bender runs the local office on the council of americanislamic relations. While he describes afdis message as a smear. As a Civil Rights Organization dedicated to the First Amendment we have no problem with the ruling. Reporter the ads have appeared in new york and san francisco. Bender hopes if they appear here they will spark not fear but outreach. For americans to learn about their muslim neighbors for the Muslim Community to reach out to jews and christians and buddhists. Reporter so, from mr. Benders point of view maybe, just maybe there could be a Silver Lining in all of this. As for septa it says it is disappointed by the ruling but respects the judges decision its currently evaluating all its options. It has 30 days to decide if it wants to appeal.
