WPVI Action News 5PM January 5, 2017

The snow falls west to east. Between 10 00 p. M. And 2 00 a. M. The steadiest snow is falling and the crews can get a handle on the roadways with the majority of the cars off the roads and in between 4 00 and 6 00 the snow is ending from the west to the east. And again just cleanup during the morning rush hour for the side roads as well as the sidewalks and of course your car and driveways. Overnight snowfall for philadelphia you see all the four different models, the projection is 1 to 2 inches for philadelphia and that is the case for most of the area picking up 1 to 2 inches with pockets of 3, in and around the heart of the delaware valley. Morning rush breaks of sun, if it breaks out there will be intense sun glare refracturing off the fresh snow and look for residual slick spots. 29 at 8 00 in the morning and with the road impans minor on the major roadways, not a lot of snow and stopping fairly early but the jove passes, the secondary roads and sidewalks impact tomorrow morning before we get a good handle before we melt it away with the rock salt and getting more traction on the surfaces, when we come back meteorologist, cecily tynan, chatting about the accuweather forecast another storm brushing parts of the area guys. Thank you adam. Meanwhile, delaware could see more than a dusting of snow from this snowfall and crews are ready. Del dot is pretreating roads across the state all day long, the agency has shifted crews around to make sure they are fully staffed for tomorrow mornings commute. And looking live the streets around city hall the busy evening rush and the city is expected to get less snow making it challenging tonight and tomorrow morning. And sara bloomquist spoke to residents live at city hall tonight. Reporter hi rick and monica, we have not seen snow in a little bit of time now, city crews will have the roads ready and the Hardware Stores are stocked and not a major event and the sight of a little snow is welcome. The rothman rink at city hall makes the experience on the ice better. Many of these young people are on winter break from school and they dont mine the pending arrival of snow. I am off from school and dont have anywhere to be. At this city salt yard at park side, road crews are preparing for the arrival of a little Winter Weather. They consider this a socalled nuisance event. They will send the trucks out for the first flake and purely a salting operation. We hope to have the roadways treated in the overnight hours and the primaries and secondaries, should be fine. We still want motorists to take their time if they see the salt trucks out there give themselves plenty of distance and just take their time and be careful driving. This afternoon roads were clear with a grint of fine from time to time. Tomorrow morning there could be icy patches, here at Rittenhouse Hardware they expect to get busy, selling salt and ice melt and all the rest. Normally the closer it gets to the storm, the more popular we get. You may want to check on the location of the ice scraper and perhaps the salt on the sidewalk. Tomorrow is likely to be the first in a little while. Sara bloomquist, channel 6 action news. Thank you. The Action News Morning Team is up early to help you through trouble spots during the commute. John rawlins is live now with new details on the effort to find her. Reporter rick, this is a continuation what we reported on last week. It was shortly after christmas when police were finally able to gain access to the property again, last week they brought in cadaver dogs. Todays search began with what looks like a push mower, the device a grown pen tating radar detecting items from utility lines to human remains, in this case authorities looking for Melissa Rodriguez who lived at this house and when missing in 2013. They did the side this gravel area adjacent to the Southeast Side of the house there was once a shed. Last week the cadaver dogs reacted positively in the basement and some thought there could be remains nearby and when the radar signals something underground they were hopeful. We all thought there was something there. The none my was 6 foot by 3 foot at a 5 foot mark deep. It was her estranged husband, jose, who reported her missing, investigators dug up portions of the yard before today as they watched and waited they were again disappointed. They found nothing. Apparently the nominally was part of a heavy mass of clay something that may have been there underground for decades. Well, the chief clearly upset about the outcome here disappointed by the outcome and frustrated and says that Law Enforcement will never give up trying to solve this crime. John rawlins, channel 6 action news. Thank you. Philadelphia police are looking for at least four men that posed as utility workers and robbed an elderly man it happened in the poverty richmond section, the men knocked on an 87yearold victims door saying they were investigating a gas leak, they then forced their way in stealing cash and cell phone, fortunately the victim was not hurt. This is a new sketch of the man that exposed himself while chasing two girls last friday. The man got out of a black jeep and ran towards them near fox chase road and they were able to run away. If you recognize him you are asked to call police, two similar cases were reported in medford township. Thursday night lets get a check of the action news traffic report. Gina is in for matt. Hello rick and monica we are starting off on the big picture pretty nice, for the most part travel times not too significant and look at 95 could be 55 Miles Per Hour around cotman avenue and 35 northbound around allegheny not bad. The vine street expressway jammed as well as the schuylkill expressway and the roosevelt boulevard if you are traveling to get into the northeast up and over the twin bridges the northbound side the a slow go from 76 to broad street and the southbound side was not bad. Here is an another look at the vine street expressway, the eastbound side is heavy between 76 out through 95 and westbound side is heavy as well. Just approaching 76. And plymouth township a crash at jolly road and dont forget about your water main break in northeast philadelphia at mill brook road at greenmont road. The best bet around that is knights road. Thank you gina. More ahead on action news tonight. New details on russias election cyber attack again the united states. How much money heather saved by switching to geico. Fifteen minutes could save you fifteen percent or more. Four people are facing felony charges after a vicious attack on a mentally challenged teenager that was streamed on facebook live. Police in chicago say the white victim was bound, beaten and verbally abused and the tackers were black. They are calling it a hate crime and denouncing it to the fullest extent. The actions in that video are reprehensible. That along with racism have absolutely no place in the city of chicago or anywhere else for t food with peanuts. Health reporter ali gorman at the big board with the new plan. The advice has now formerly changed. Research shows early exposure to peanuts lowers the chance for an allergy. The old advice was to wait to give peanuts until age 3 but its based on the child risk of developing an allergy. Babies with severe eczema on their skin or egg allergy or both are at the highest risk and own get peanuts at a Doctors Office at 3 months and the small taste at 6 months old at home and those with no eczema or Food Allergies can get peanut along with other solid food at six months. Any infant getting their first taste should be watched for ten minutes to see if there is a reaction. And dont use a whole peanut broken up so its not a choking hazard. Experts hope this new approach will save lives. Also, today we have a safety alert for young children, a federal Appeals Court overturned the governments ban on super strong magnet sets, they are back on the market. Consumer reports says that there is a dangerous swallowing hazard especially around young children. Magnets are so strong if they are swallowed they can pull together with enough force to punch holed along different sections of the digestive system. They say they are perfectly safe when properly used how Consumer Reports urges families with children not to have them at home. Before the ban thousands of people ended up in Emergency Rooms with injuries after the ban doctors say it dropped to only a few. So good for something for parents to know for small children. Meteorologist, cecily tynan, has the latest on the forecast and a little bit of changes as we go to sleep tonight. A little bit of snow is beginning to break out. Double scan live radar picking up echos of snow and the ground is very dry and a lot of this not yet reaching the grown and where you see the brighter whites near millville and middletown could have a few snowflakes breaking out and wilmington snowing and not yet reaching the ground and sky 6 hd taking a look at the riff front in wilmington its cloudy and cold and the snow showers will begin to break out shortly. Temperatures and the wind it feels like its cold enough for snow. Philadelphia 24 and allentown 22 and 28 at the Atlantic City airport and windchills of the weekend will be stuck in the teens. Satellite 6 along with action radar showing we are dealing with now a little renegade batch of moisture and the main area is still across the ohio valley and transferring energy off the carolina coast moving to the north and east. What this means is that the steadiest snow is falling when most of us are sleeping, future tracker 6 showing at 11 00 snow is expanding areas to the west of philadelphia. And wee hours of the morning at 2 00 we see the steadiest snow and moving in quickly and so its moving out quickly it will be done by 6 00, by 9 00 some sunshine breaking out so its a quick hit of snow and more of a nuisance event. As far as the amount not the blizzard of 96, 21 years ago about a coating to an inch, the bulk of our viewing area, parts of cumberland and kent countying a coating to ink of snow and cold enough so the snow is not melting on in the windy overtight tonight and the snow will be sticking to untreated surfaces and well see sunshine midday and temperatures are slightly above freezing and there will be melting going on tomorrow afternoon. The fiveday at 5 00 showing tomorrow after the Early Morning snow, partly sunny and cold day, 35 degrees and temperatures really crash over the weekend the high on saturday, 29 degrees and it looks like the coastal storm will be brushing the coast and could be a bigger snow event along the coast on saturday than tonights event and sunday the windchills in the teens, 28 and monday 29 degrees and tuesday temperatures finally climbing above freezing and 38 degrees and increase clouds ahead of our next storm system and well talk about that and the coastal storm on saturday coming up in the full accuweather forecast. Its a real game changer. giggles keep on scratchin action news continues with meteorologist, adam joseph, jaime apody, Rick Williams and Monica Malpass. Hello again here is what is happening on action news thursday night. Its not a big storm but a few inches of snow will blanket our area and we have the latest coming up. And how far did russia go to influence the president ial election through Cyber Attacks and president obamas review is released and the hot topic on capitol hill. The first snowfall of 2017 is knocking on our doorstep as we speak and you are taking double live looks at Atlantic City new jersey and wilmington, delaware, dark now but the sky 6 hd cameras are showing the snow in a few hours as it begins to fall, its first snowfall of 2017 will only be a nuisance just a few inches falling across the area, when the snow will begin and make the friday morning commute slick. Adam joseph is at the big board with an update from stormtracker 6 live double scan. The timing is good with this storm a nuisance storm and the steadiest snow will fall while many of us are sleeping. As we look at stormtracker 6 live double scan Winter Weather advisories from the ohio and Tennessee Valley pushing into parts of the atlantic over our region and this is a storm from the west, not a coastal storm coming up the eastern seaboard. There is limited moisture with it. As you look at the radar here, there is that energy, snow in pittsburgh at State College is trying to break out a couple of pl flurries north and west and it develops an ocean storm too far to really impact our area as that heads out to sea. As you take a look at the impacts here as you travel around, low impacts through the 8 00 hour up to 8 00 for the majority of us, its between 11 00 p. M. And 2 00 a. M. That is when well see the steadiest snow falling and then it tapers off so by the time the morning commute comes around and the snow is not falling anymore just trying to clean up the sidewalks and side roads and then beyond the storm temperatures are only in the 20s over the weekend as another shot at snow comes from the coastal communities on saturday. And then on that seven day, temperatures jump into the 50s just down the road. Well talk about how much to expect across the board for tonight, the saturday system and the seven day coming up in just a little bit guys.
