The warm weather will bring out thousands of walkers and runners to the Schuylkill River trail. And everybody is hoping that the trail will be the scene of terrific and safe recreation this weekend. Action News Reporter Trish Hartman is live by boathouse row. Trish, what steps are being taken to make sure its a safe summer on the trail . Reporter well, jim, the very people who use this trail either on foot or on wheels will soon be the ones helping to keep it safe. A new initiative is drafting volunteers who will learn how to help police keep an eye on things here on the trail. Its finally a beautiful spring day and that means the Schuylkill River trail is packed. I usually come here like walk or run. This is ideal if i can get out at lunch for a little bit. Reporter but some users like gina say theyve had to keep their guard up. She says a group of teenagers harassed her and her husband on the trail last fall. Theyre very confrontational and then since theyre in a group they can run away and not get any consequences. Reporter she was happy to hear about a new citizen trail watch organized after police say groups of teens on bikes were harassing and attacking people on the trail. Volunteers can now register to attend a free Training Session on april 27th where theyll learn how to properly report crime and take suspect descriptions. We want as many people as possible that utilize the trail that have a interin the trail that love this trail to come on out, get some training on how to volunteer in keeping the trail safe. Be each others eyes and ears u councilman Kenyatta Johnson says surveillance cameras are in the works. Community organizations like run 215 and the Philadelphia Bicycle Coalition have teamed up with police to get the word out about the new initiative. Its just a matter of all of us who are using it as a Community Taking care of each other and ensuring that safety. Police found 31yearold colby rogers shot to death inside a car. The vehicle was on the street along the 600 block of woodhaven lane just after 3 00 this morning. No arrests have been made. Philadelphia police made an arrest in a deadly hit and run crash in kensington. 62yearold Ramon Morales is charged with murder and homicide by vehicle. That after investigators say he struck and killed a man riding a scooter on wednesday night. Police say morales car dragged Thomas Dunbar hundreds of feet before taking off. Dunbar died 30 minutes later at the hospital. Fire crews in bucks county battle a house fire this afternoon in richboro. The flames broke out just before 3 30 in the 200 block of patrick drive. Crews dealt with heavy smoke. Fortunately there were no reports of any injuries. A car ended up on the side of the University Avenue bridge in philadelphia this morning. Chopper6 was over the scene just after 11 00. Between 34th street and grays ferry avenue in grays ferry. Police say the driver lost control and crashed into the median. Fortunately he nor anybody else was hurt. The bill cosby Sexual Assault saga was back in Philadelphia Federal Court today. Lawyers addressed a number of issues. Action News Reporter vernon odom was there. Reporter lawyers for bill cosby and former Temple University employee Andrea Constand left a federal Court Hearing today refusing to comment on the case. Their clients did not appear. Andrea constand signed an agreement with bill cosby 10 years ago accepting an undisclosed amount of money. Now she wants her confidentiality agreement with the entertainer lifted claiming hes violated deal already is that trying to intimidate her and other witnesses in the criminal assault case against him in Montgomery County. Cosby is going to federal court trying to get the money back from constand and the criminal charges dropped claiming he made an agreement with former Montgomery County d. A. Bruce castor that he would not prosecute cosby in exchange for his testimony in couldnt standsconstands crimi. The most intriguing news today, the criminal trial for bill cosby in norristown Montgomery County wont begin until sometime in early 2017. At the federal courthouse in center city, im vernon odom, channel6 action news. Camden county Health Department says a woman has tested positive for the zika virus. Health Officials Say the woman is not pregnant. She recently returned from traveling to a country where the zika virus is present. The virus is linked to birth defects like microcephaly. There are also reports of rare neurologic problems in adults. Also in camden county, Cooper University hospital has been fined thousands of dollars for health and safety violations. Osha slapped a 55,000 fine on the hospital for allowing employees to be exposed to needles stick injuries and blood borne pathogen hazards. Cooper says it is taking the report seriously and will address the issue. The hospital has until may third to make changes. Atlantic city has made a partial payment to the school district. Mayor don guardian says the district received more than 3 million this morning butter state Officials Say it is only part of the money that was due in march and nothing from april has yet been paid. Todays partial payment will keep the schools opened for now. Atlantic city is on the verge of running out of money and is trying to prevente prevent a jum clearing the money it has. Frontier airlines is clear for takeoff for new routes from Trenton Mercer airport. The airline has been flying out of trenton for four years. But starting this summer, it will fly nonstop to atlanta, charlotte, chicago, detroit and raleigh durham. It is part of the airlines expansion into more than 40 new markets. The trees are now just a memory but the fields remain a sore point. Two of them will be artificial turf, made with material some think could be unhealthy. Neighbors say the material is being looked at by the feds. Theyre going to be crumb rubber and the government has now said they decided to do a study on this that may take two to three years.
