Reporter nearby resident reported hearing the shots. We heard shots, pop, pop, pop. I said hoe my god somebod said s shooting. To this of cops coming. They just slot a cop. Reporter an officer drove dorm plan to commerce fee see fitzgerald hospital dorm plan to mercy fitzgerald hospital. I was told by the doctor thank god he had his vest on. Reporter soon heavily armed officers descend on the apartment complex looking for the people involved. Nearby service on amtrak and septa was suspended during the intensive manhunt. Before long they arrested the gunman and three women. Nearby residents applauded. As it turns out dorman is the first folcroft officer to be shot in the line of duty. To have an officer injured like this never, i mean you know, its a wakeup call for these small towns. Fingerprinted and arraigned tonight. Reporter now its unknown what role the three women played in this entire incident. Again, the alleged gunman dante Brooks Island aka abu wahi is going to be charged with two counts of attempted murder, two counts of aggravated assault and related offenses. Authorities tell you another officer transported dorm plan tdorman to mercy fitzl hospital in a vehicle. That vehicle was inspected before being towed weigh. From there dorman was quickly taken to penn presbyterian in University City and thats where action News Reporter jeff chirico is standing by tonight with the latest on officer dormans condition. Jeff. Reporter rick, dorman is in critical but stable condition right now. Hes undergoing his second surgery today. This one to address gun shot wounds to his cheeks. Despite being shot seven times, dorman managed to survive in large part due to his bulletproof vest. I was told by the doctors that thank god he had his vest on. Reporter Folcroft Police chief spoke to reporters outside the hospital where one of his office had been wheeled hours earlier. 25yearold Christopher Dorman had been shot seven times in the face torso and legs. His mother and father are here. Theyre obviously upset but they feel moury leaved now that hes stable, at least stable according to the doctors. Reporter police say dorm plan was ambushed this morning while responding to a drug call here in an apartment complex on the 1500 block of elmwood avenue a second officer placed him in this patrol car and rushed him to fitzgerald mercy hospital. Along the way dorman was alert and talking. Hes able to speak. He was conscious. He was able to give a description of the actor so he did well under the circumstances. Reporter he spoke highly of dorman who joined the force one year ago this month. He says hes an outstanding officer who even before today had proven a deep compliment to the people and borough he serves. Hes a folcroft residents, folcroft fireman and became a Police Officer a little over a year ago. Hes done nothing but serve his communities constantly half of which was volunteer work. Reporter and the chief says that dorm plan was a parttime officer who was pursuing a fulltime job with septa. Once again he is in critical but stable condition right now. The manhunt for the attacker caused delays for hundreds of train passengers today. Service between wilmington and philadelphia was suspended while police searched the tracks near folcroft. Amtrak express and northeast regional trains were stopped for about two hours. Service resumed about 1 oclock this afternoon. Funeral Services Today for 18yearold akyra murray who was shot and killed during the orlando nightclub massacre. Friends and family gathered to say goodbye to the promising teenager who was on vacation in orlando when she was tragically gunned down. Action News Reporter Katherine Scott has more on todays emotional farewell in West Philadelphia. Reporter tangible grief, unspeakable loss akyra murray was only 18 years old. Her friends and family gathered at Monumental Baptist Church in West Philadelphia to remember her, to celebrate he her. Cousin tiara parker was with akyra and friend patience carter when a gunman stormed pulse nightclub in orlando. All three hid in a bathroom. All three were shot. Akyra did not survive akyra graduated third in her class at west catholic she was a star basketball player, a 1,000point scorer with a scholarship to merls see hurts university. Since her dream was to one day play in the wnba the atlanta dream sent an autographed jersey personalized with her name and number. This jersey is in honor of a player who symbolized sportsmanship both on the court and off. Reporter as one mourner said there are 48 other funerals like this going on, victims of this mass shooting and while there is great sorrow for losing akyra theres also a great joy in having known her. The vibrant teen loved the color red so many wore it today. Her teammates wore basketball jerseys. City and state officials including the mayor came to offer their condolences. A vigil is being held at this hour for a fouryearold girl who accidentally shot herself inside of a north philadelphia home. Dozens have gathered from the 1800 block of north 20th street to remember the little girl. Organizers also are calling on people who have guns in their homes to lock them up and put the ammunition in a separate locked box. The little girl lived with her mother and younger sister. Still not clear who the gun belonged to. Police were investigating a disturbing discovery in north philadelphia. Firefighters were called to put out a fire in an empty lot at 10 30 this morning. Happened in the 1700 block of west allegheny. Once the flames were out, firefighters realized it was a body on fire. Police have not yet identified the victim or determined if the person was dead before the blaze. A woman charged with gifting her under aged daughter to a feasterville man will remain locked up for now. Savilla stoltzfus remains in jail on 1 million bail after a bucks county judge refused a request for bail reduction. Theyre charged with child endangerment after police found a dozen girls living with lee kaplan. Daniel told police they gave their then 14yearold daughter to kaplan after he helped them out if thisly. Kaplan sired two children with the girl. He faces Sexual Assault charges. Firefighters responded to Driscoll Hall college of nursing on the 800 block of East Lancaster avenue just after 9 00 this morning. School Officials Say a number of faculty and students began to feel nauseous and dizzy. The building was evacuated. Firefighters found no air quality issues and gave the allclear to reopen. One person was taken to the hospital as a precaution. The steve wilmington has come stev city of wilmington hosted the if any city summer fest unity day. The public was invited to the free event and with school being out many youngsters showed up to play games go on fun rides and enjoy some good food. The mayor Dennis Williams and other city officials were on hand and together they urged families to take the pledge to be Violence Free this summer. And now that school is out and Summer Vacation is under way many kids will no doubt be flocking to swimming pools throughout the area. And efforts are under way to make sure youngsters know how to swim safely. New jersey correspondent Nora Muchanic introduces us to one such program that got under way today in burlington county. I dont really know thousand swim. Reporter littl a free Swim Safe Program offered by the ymca of burlington and camden county. Swim, holding me up,. Reporter instructors and volunteers teach the children about water safety how to assist someone who needs help and the basics of keeping themselves afloat. To not get yourself into a bad situation if you are in a bad situation how do you help yourself get out of it. Its about again understanding the risks and then the rewards of what water has to offer. Reporter statistics show between 2005 and 2014 over 3500 people died each year from accidental drowning. 10 people drown every day in america and each year 5,000 kids under the age of 14 are hospitalized for near drowning accidents. Thats why parents are motivated to have kids participate in the Swim Safe Program. Educate them on the safety of swimming, that it can be fun bit theres also rules you have to follow. Its not all about splashing and pushing and dinging. Today were just learning how to be safe when swimming. I know how to swim but i just forgot over the summer so so its a work in progress. I was just like proud of myself. I just kept trying and trying and kicking and it was just like really fun. Reporter and thats the goal, fun at the pool or beach but always safety first. Ben simmons says last night was a blur. Theres a lot of torque get done. Ben simmons is the number one pick and with there comes some big expectations. Especially for a sixers Team Desperate to win but simmons just got here and hes not ready to say when the sixers will finally contends. Simmons the sixers first number one overall pick since Allen Iverson 20 years ago. He has big shoes to fill and the 19yearold says hes ready to do something special. The lsu freshman comes in as the sixers first number one overall pick in 20 years as you said and given there hes not quite 20 years old yet, theres a lot riding on his young broad shoulders. Talk about the pressure that comes with being the number one pick here. Um, you know, some people call it pressure. I usually look at it if im working as hard as i can thats all i can ask of myself and my teammates. As long as you put in the work you get results from doing that. Any young player coming into the game is going to feel that but were going to try to spread that as much as we can across the entire team so that its not just on bens shoulders to bear that weight. As we look at storm tracker6 live double scan still dealing with a pocket of downpours and thunderstorms in parts of northern lancaster and berks county. All of the storms that pass into southern new jersey prompting some flash flood warnings in Cumberland County that is long gone, the flooding has receded but we have this area that really hasnt moved all that much so weve got 10 between one and 2inches of are a nine northern parts of berks county just to the north and west of reading still nine lightning strikes in the last 15 minutes that is down from over 30 lightning strikes within about a half hour ago so they are beginning to rain themselves out and slowly drifting from the northwest to the south and east. Temperaturewise its 79 in fleetwood near those storms, 76 in quakertown, 77 warrington. 78 in center city. Its a bit drier to the north, at least how it feels when you step out. When you head to the south the numbers look cooler but its more tropicallike because of the earlier rains from vineland at 68, 69, woodbine, Sea Isle City 79 degrees and as you head to the north ewing a little bit warmer at 78 degrees.
