Reporter Michael Reese has been waiting his whole adult life he says to hum the action news theme song on action news. So we let him on this memorial day. Obviously by his account and so many others, despite this inclement weather this has been a memorial day weekend to remember. Reese says he wants to thank our service men and women for that. Cant express enough gratitude to the men and women hoop serve us. I mean, it goes beyond words. Reporter today in wildwood the rides were packed, boardwalk games were being played. We saw a smile just about on everyones face. It looked like and sounded like good Old Fashioned fun. What have we done. We have rided some rides and i beat my daddy at a game. Yeah, yeah, you dont need to tell the world. Reporter in ocean city you cant blame them for not going into the water too cold for that so they ate funnel cake monkey bread you name it. Norma owner of curly fries says theyve had plenty of sales. Lineups all day long, fries, funnel cake, lemonade, hot dogs an good time. Reporter as of 2 oclock this was the scene of wildwood going strong. You would think everyone almost forgot memorial day weekend is just about over. You guys having fun. We are. All the way out there by the water theyre up there flying those kites high in the air. Really was a memorial day to remember down here. Of course todays holiday is about sharing time with family and friends but even more so its about honoring the men and women whom have fought and died for our country. In the citys lawndale section Boy Scout Troop 160 presented a musical tribute to our nations heroes of the philadelphia protestant home. Afterwards the scouts along with residents of the home gathered to lay a wreath at the base of the american flag. This afternoon in washington square, a separate wreath laying at the tomb of the unknown soldier of the american revolution. The wreath was laid at the foot of the monument by local members of the daughters of the american revolution. Its a memorial day tradition here in philadelphia dating back more than 20 years. One of the larger memorial day ceremonies in philadelphia takes place along penns landing. At the Vietnam Veterans and korean veterans memorials. John rawlins is there tonight and joins us live with details of both of those commemorations today. John. Reporter hi, rick. Well, there is a school of thought that the significance of memorial day has been deluded with all the emphasis on the beginning of summer and barbecues and such but that was not the case here, not today. The names. Reporter carved in stone at the vietnam and korean memorials, the names of philadelphias war dead from those conflicts. General patton world war ii when talked about when he talked about memorial day day he said on memorial day we do not mourn those who gave the ultimate sacrifice. We celebrate that they lived. Reporter but it was pointed out during the vietnam era neither combatants who died or survived were celebrated by a grateful nation. We must remember that we were in large part at one time an ungrateful nation. These young men coming back were not warmly welcomed. There was he would thrown at them and names called. The men that died, friends that i knew that i left over there and sometime i get angry. Reporter anger john douglas says that has dissipated as society has separated the warrior from the war. Im grateful that people now are finally recognizing the vietnam vets and now when a person see a vietnam vet they say thank you for your service and so im very proud. Reporter following the formal ceremonies some took in these images and these names and reflected on those who gave their lives. I need to come here and appreciate what these veterans have done for all of us, our freedom and the ultimate sacrifice that they made. Reporter more than 600 names etched in the stone. 640 additional names in the granite of the philadelphia Vietnam Veterans memorial just across the street here on penns landing. Live on penns landing john rawlins channel6 action news. Rick. John, thank you. Meanwhile communities paid tribute to the men and women who gave their lives in service of our nation. Several hundred people took part in the narberth memorial day parade this morning. From a truck filled with patriotic youngsters to the local Boy Scout Troop everyone took part even uncle sam made an appearance. Fire. [gunfire] a contingent of revolutionary war soldiers showed off their skills at the newtown parade in bucks county. Youngsters waved their flag as the parade went by. There were also some other unique forms of transportation here. And this Patriotic Group led the parade through morrisville in bucks county today. People stood under their umbrellas on the sidewalk and watched the parade as it made its way through the street. Police officers and firefighters also took part along with local boy scout and girl scout troops. In folsom Delaware County there was the stark reminder of the cost of freedom. Hundreds of white crosses lined up at the v. F. W. Post 928 along macdade boulevard. This somber event was sponsored by the v. F. W. s ladies auxiliary. In other news tonight Philadelphia Police are trying to find out who killed a woman and her brother inside their home in Port Richmond over the weekend. Neighbors say the woman was a beloved member of the community who attended church most days of of the week. Sarah bloomquist is live at Police Headquarters with the latest on the investigation tonight. Sarah. Reporter rick, homicide detectives here are working to find Surveillance Video and follow up on leads as they try to figure out who murdered this woman and her older brother in their Port Richmond home over the weekend. Its sad to see that it was her. Reporter neighbors here on the 1900 block of east clearfield in Port Richmond are finding very difficult to understand why someone would do harm to Florence Pompey known as miss tina. She was an awesome woman. She was the best. Like literally she didnt deserve this. It was devastating just to hear, you know, and then i saw them crying and it was really it still is devastating. Reporter pompey shared the row home with her 54yearold brother. Their bodies were discovered sunday morning. Both had suffered gunshot wounds to the head. He was also shot in the stomach. Something that i cant even imagine. Out of all the people in the world i would have never thought that anything would be at miss tinas door like this. Reporter neighbors say pompey was a former Foster Parent known to her kindness generosity and devotion to god. She was a fixture on the front step where a small memorial now stands. Faith of the family. What do you say . You sorry for their loss but its terrible. Its a horrible thing that happened. Reporter neighbors began to suspect something might be wrong over the weekend when they didnt see pompey or hear the sounds of the gospel music she so loved to play. My godmother told me they didnt hear nothing at all and the last time they saw them it was a friday night. Reporter police are also waiting on the medical examiner to determine the exact time of death. That of course will help them pinpoint when exactly these murders happened as they search for a suspect. To would be burglars gave it everything they had but they just couldnt get into a commercial building in the citys lawndale section. But their persistence and their faces were caught on camera. This happened last month and you can see them casually checking out the building here on the 6600 block of hasbrouck avenue. One turns around and tries to use a crowbar to open the door. That doesnt work so they try another door. The second suspect even tries to pound his way in women bat. But they seem to hear something from inside and stop what theyre doing and quickly run away. Police were called to the 900 block of South Broad Street around 6 oclock this morning. They have not released whether the victim was a man or a woman much we also dont know how that person died. An investigation is under way at a zoo in the Lehigh Valley after the death of a young giraffe. The animal died after a burst of unexplained aggressiveness. Action News Reporter walter perez has the story tonight from schnecksville. Murphy. Reporter only action news was allowed access to murphy the giraffe one day after the mysterious death of his sixyearold son ernie. The animals arrived in the Lehigh Valley from the zoo in kansas city last week. The zoo ceo says everything went well at first. When he came into the barn murphy took the side of his face and rubbed it against ernies neck. Reporter but scene Officials Say it was over this past weekend when murphy and ernie turned aggressive toward each other. While its not unusual behavior forever rasers their handlers decided to keep them in separate enclosures overnight into sunday as a precaution. When scene officials returned sunday morning, they found ernie was that standing with his head bowed unusually low and they knew something was wrong. The medical staff quickly converged onto the scene. As they started taking his vitals ernie fell over and he passed away on his own. That was probably the that was probably the most i never want to see or experience anything like that again. Reporter at the outset it was believed that ernie may have died from a possible neck injury endured while scuffling with murphy. The cause of death remains unknown pending the results of a scheduled necropsy s the Lehigh Valley expects to open its giraffe exhibit sometime next month but only if everyone feels comfortable doing so. We know that were not the only ones mourning the loss of ernie. And so were going to do this hopefully sooner than we expected to do it but again, we really need to make sure that murphy is ready for this. Reporter the giraffes were delivered from the Kansas City Zoo after 3. 8 Million Investment by the Lehigh Valley zoo to expand its african exhibit. The hope to to bring in another giraffe to join murphy but at this point that idea remains on hold. Reporting from the Lehigh Valley zoo, walter perez channel6 action news. Ducis here with sports.
