WPVI Action News At 4pm November 5, 2014

Have 60,000 worth of debt and i dont know how to pay it back. And the American People arent satisfied. I want to do everything i can to deliver for them. How about democrats . The fact that they kept you out of the battleground states . Listen, i think some of you saw when i was out on the campaign trail, i love campaigning, i love talking to ordinary people and listening to their stories, i love shaking hands and getting hugs and just seeing the process of democracy and citizenship manifest itself during an election. But im also a practical guy and ultimately every candidate had to make their own decisions about what they thought would be most helpful for them. I wanted to make sure im respectful of their particular region and their particular state or Congressional District and if it was more helpful for them for me to be behind the scenes, im happy to do it. Ill let other people analyze that, but what i will emphasize is that one of the nice things about being in the sixth year of your presidency is that you have seen a lot of ups and downs and your fair share of the limelight. And there are times where my request for appearances were endless and there are times when politically we were down and it all kind of evens out, which is why what is most important is i think keeping your eye on the ball, are you actually getting some good done. Scott orsly last question. Thank you mr. President , you mentioned where your policies actually were on the ballot than members of your party, does that signal some short coming on your part or the partys part in framing this election and communicating to the American People what democrats stand for . You know i do think that one area where i know we are constantinely experimenting and trying to do better is just making sure that the people know exactly what we are trying to accomplish and what we have accomplished in clear ways that people can understand how it affects them. I think the minimum wage, i talked about it a lot on the campaign trail, but im not sure it penetrated well enough to make a difference. Part of what i also think we have to look at is that twothirds of people that are eligible to vote and just didnt vote. One of the things that im very proud of in 2008 and 2012, within i ran for office was we got people involved who hadnt been involved before, we got folks to vote that hadnt voted before. And that was young people and part of the promise and excitement, that if you get involved and participate and embrace that sense of citizenship, then things change and not just an abstract way, but concrete ways, some get a job that didnt have it before and a student is able to go to college that couldnt afford it before. And sustaining that especially in midterm elections have proven difficult. Sustaining that sense of, if you get involved, and if you vote, there is going to be big change out there. And partly, i think, when they look at washington, they say nothing is working, its not making a difference and there is just a constant slew of bad news, coming over the tv screen, then you can understand how folks would get discouraged. But its my job to figure this out. As best i can. And if the way we are talking about issues season working then ill try some different things. If the ways that were aapproaching the republicans in congress isnt working ill try different things, if its having a drink with Mitch Mcconnell or letting john boehner beat me again at golf, or weekly press conferences, i dont know if that would be affective. Whatever i think might make a difference in this, im going to be trying out. Up until my last day in office. But ill close with what i said in my opening statement, i am really optimistic about america. I know that runs counter to the current mood but when you look at the facts our economy is stronger than just about anybodys, and our Energy Production is better than just about anybodys, we slashed our deficit by more than half, more people have health insurance, our businesses have the strongest Balance Sheet they have had in decades. Our young people are just incredibly talented and gifted and more of them are graduating from high school and more are going on to college and more women are getting degrees and entering into the workforce, and part of the reason i love campaigning, you travel around the country and folks are just good, they are smart and hard working and they are not just paying a lot of attention to washington, in some cases they have given up on washington but their impulses are not sharply partisan or ideological, they are really practical, good generous people. We continue to be a magnet for the best and brightest from all around the world, we have all the best cards relative to every other country on earth, our armed forces, you talk to them, i had a chance this morning to just call some of the Health Service that is operating in liberia, and the amount of hope and professionalism that they have brought has galvanized the entire country and built a platform for other countries to come in and we have made progress to fight a disease in a country that a month and a half ago was desperate and had no hope. So all of that makes me optimistic. And my job over the next couple of years is to do some practical concrete things as much as possible with congress, if its not possible with congress, then on my own, to show people why we should be confident and to give people a sense of progress and hope. That doesnt mean that there isnt going to be ongoing nagging problems that are stubborn and cant be solved overnight and despite economic growth, wages and income have still not gone up and that is a longterm trend we have seen for 1020 years, it makes people worry not just about their situation but if their kids will do better than they did. There are some concrete things we can do to make sure wages do go up. Minimum wage increases in those states was a good start. More than anything what i want to communicate over the next two years is the promise and possibility of america. This is just an extraordinary country, and our democracy is messy and we are diverse and we are big and there are times when you are a politician and are you disappointed with election resultses. But maybe im just getting older, it doesnt make me mopey it energizes me, because it means that that democracy was working and people in america were restless and impatient and even when things are going good we want them to do better. This is why its the greatest country on earth and so privileged to be president for the next couple of years. All right. Thank you everybody. You were listening to a rather remarkable News Conference from an inprospective and conciliatory president obama, after a sweeping victory by republicans who strengthened their hold on. House of representatives and recaptured their majority and the president will seek to work with them where he condition around them to fulfill his agenda in the final two years, but a difficult day today for president obama. After a rough night for democrats, well continue to bring you updates on the president but right now action news at 4 00 is beginning. Action News Delaware valleys leading news program. We have Team Coverage today, walter perez is live in carleshas home town but first we start with david henry outside of northeast detectives. Reporter Philadelphia Police here and the fbi are moving this case forward and chasing down a number of new leads and finding new video of a possible suspect. The Video Surveillance was recorded somewhere in philadelphia, almost eight hours before carlesha was snatched off the streets in german town, investigators want you to take a look at the way he walks and carries himself hoping it will ring a bell. Investigators are not saying where the store is or how they traced him to this location doing some shopping eight hours before the abduction. Im hopeful something will happen in the next day or so, we want answers and want our granddaughter home. Carleshas relatives dont recognize the man in the videos that surfaced. This one aired exclusively on action news shows the initial encounter, at first carlesha walks out on to the street to avoid the man and then she stops and shakes hands with him and then is pulled into his car. That puzzles her family. Does she know him . Does he come over and introduce himself . And they show the suspect using the debit card at a bank in maryland on monday. And then seen shopping at a gas station convenience store. Much of the search activity is focused in maryland involving the state police and fbi. Carleshas family is hoping she comes back unharmed. I want to plead whoever this guy is that has her, i know he must have a sister, a mother, im just praying that his sister or mother see him on the news and bring our child back home. Three days later they are still not giving up hope. The police say they are getting a lot of useful help from the public about who this person might be but they still want to hear from you if you think you recognize him. Live at northeast detectives, david henry, channel 6 action news. Thank you. The fbi is trying to get information about this case out to as many people as possible, this is the image they are putting on billboards all up and down the i95 corridor, hoping that someone with information will come forward in this case. Now, lets head out live to action news reporter, walter perez who is in leonard town, maryland, outside of carleshas high school. You talked to her best friend. She along with people that know her said that carlesha was a popular well liked people, she worked at the dress barn in nearby california, maryland. She was loud and out going. Darrian mason says that she and carlesha were like sisters through high school. And she can tell you there was no one like her best friend. She always wanted to become a Fashion Designer and she loved dressing up and she was different and some people didnt like her for it but i loved her for it. Darien says that she actually lived with her during high school, but despite that episode in her life she was very close to her family. She doesnt deserve any of this, she doesnt deserve to be taken, her family loves her and misses her. That includes leon bash, another close friend, there was only one thing going through his mind when he saw the video. This isnt real, this isnt real. Ive never seen anything happen like this unless its in a movie or on tv. But both mason and bash agree that its possible that carlesha may have known the abduct ter. I done think it was someone that carlesha knew. That was walter perez reporting, can you get a closer look at the person of interest in this case at 6abc. Com. Youll find the Surveillance Video and other Images Released by police and the plea from carleshas family, see it all at 6abc. Com. As you saw three minutes ago on channel 6, washington is reacting to a major election victory by the republican party, the gop regained control of the senate, exit polls show that voters were dissatisfied with the president and took it out on the democratic party. President obama and Senate Republican leader, Mitch Oconnell talked about ajaust justing to the new dynamic. Maybe there are things we can agree on to make progress in the country. We all have to give americans a reason to feel like the ground is stable beneath their feet and that the future is secure and a path for young people to succeed. And that folks here in washington are concerned about them. Republicans picked up at least seven seats held by democrats last night and some races have not yet been decided. Back here at home, democrat, tom wolf won 55 of the vote making tom corbett, the first governor in the state to not be reelected. Chad pradelli is live now in manchester, your county and wolfs favorite eatery. Hi there chad. Reporter hey brian, a couple dods people came out here to see governor elect, tom wolf and many were long time friends and neighbors, they are certainly happy, wolf said he had to pinch himself to remind himself he is the next governor of the pennsylvania. He admits to being a novice and calls himself a citizens politician. But he is ready to get to work. He was outside of manchester cafe his favorite restaurant. Its a great thing, im surprised, but they are all really surprised. The big thing is education, which he calls a top priority, he believes that there are areas where costs can be kutd but additional revenue is needed for school, he plans to tax natural gas drillers a 5 severance tax but did not elaborate on the income tax. I talked about a 5 severance tax, it would generate a billion dollars, it goes a long way to taking care of the deficit. Yesterdays win is a proud moment and they call wolf a humble man who cares about others which is what this state needs. He is a very smart guy, a very smart guy, he is down to earth and will talk to anybody any time. What may be somewhat surprising, wolf didnt do very well in wolf county, corbett beat him resoundingly, but he won philadelphia and surrounding counties, that led to his election to be the 47th governor of the state. Again, wolf has ideas to move this straight forward but you now have a republican led legislate your and some are predicting gridlock in harrisburg. Chad pradelli, channel 6 action news.
