So the company that employed 428 people in philadelphia will eliminate 150 positions and pepsi says this is not something we take lightly or want to do. We are working with the community and soonon to treat people with dignity. The tax took effect on sweetened beverages in january. They took in 5. 7 million, the money funds prekindergarten programs city wide. And the Mayors Office pointed to pepsis profits in the billions and the new prek program created 251 jobs in the city. They said the soda company stooped to a new low. They are holding jobs hostage because of the beverage tax. If they are still selling soda outside of the city pepsi doesnt only distribute in the city of philadelphia. Why they are laying off folks im not sure. Its a corporation and company and they have a right to do what is in the best interest of their business but i would like to have given the tax a year to be collected to see an actual impact. Pepsi says if the tax is repealed or struck down the company will bring people back to work. Other companies and Grocery Stores says that the beverage tax has led to layoffs and slumping sales.
