A stretch of busy 17th street in philadelphia is still closed as construction crews work to repair an underground pipe that broke last night. The water line caused the pavement to give way and that is causing all kinds of problems. Sara bloomquist is live now. A headache in one busy spot. This is a mess in a couple of ways, the hole here on 17th street got bigger this afternoon as peco and pgw tried to complete the repairs and turn the water back on across the street. That did happen in the last couple of minutes and in the meantime traffic is a nightmare from this stretch of busy north south street and Rittenhouse Square shut down. Work on walnut and locust carried on well throughout the afternoon. Pgw was ready to turn the water back on and examine the issue more closely but a live wire was found under the ground and peco was summoned to repair the issue. And a begger hole was required. Well investigate the cause of the cavein and see what took place there and then we can hope the street again. They found this hole in the road, a cavein they called it and found a break in the 3 inch line to a building and by midmorning the water was off forcing this bakery to close. I saw them moving to kind without Running Water so they cant really businesses that didnt require water stayed open as the jack hammer jammed away outdoors. Motorists were honking and frustrated with the backup. We are moving maybe one car per light. I have been here for 20 minutes for one block trying to get forward.
