This is breaking overnight, a Philadelphia Police officer is on the mend this morning after being ambushed by gunman. The suspect at one point was inside the cruiser as he fired off a about barrage of bullets. The fun gunfire was at West Philadelphia. We have Live Team Coverage with Katherine Scott at pen Presbyterian Hospital where the officer underwent surgery. And we go out to Annie Mccormick who live at the scene. Reporter it was after 11 30, police say the Police Officer was ambushed, the armed suspect walked up to the vehicle using a 9millimeter weapon. He unlookedloaded the weapon hig the Police Officer three time. Hatter hart was ambushed by an armed gunman a five year veteran was hit three times. The suspect unloaded 13 shots from a 9millimeter. Listen as Jesse Hartnet net calls for help. Im bleeding heavily. Reporter a male comes off the sidewalk and starts firing into his drivers side window. The male gets closer and closer to the points he is inside the car firing at the officer. At this point we know he fired 13 times at the officer. Reporter the officer managed to return fire hitting the suspect these three times. Police officers recovered a gun and clothing believed to be the suspects near the scene. Police apprehended the injured suspect a short time later not far from the scene of the ambush and transported him to the hospital of the university of pennsylvania. The investigation is still unfolding at this time and a motive is not clear. Its crazy. It doesnt make any sense, its ridiculous, maybe well find out from this guy what he did it for, i dont know, but regardless, it doesnt matter, he tried to take his life. Reporter now, according to police the entire incident was captured on real time cameras. They are not releasing the suspects identity, all we know he is a 39yearold man from yeadon. He is grateful for the officers sacrifice and said more needs to be done with the guns on the streets. A man dressed in several layers of clothing walked up to the officers vehicle in West Philadelphia late last night and started unloading bullets from his weapon. The gunman fired 13 shots hitting the officer and his cruiser. The wounded hartnett returned fire striking the gunman three times who was later caught.
