Were going to turn now to new information on the gunfire sending shock waves through a quiet philadelphia hospital. Police say a patient started shooting while talking to his psychiatrist. The doctor then drew his own weapon ending the confrontation. Police this morning saying that they likely saved many other lives by doing that, and ron is just back from covering the story in philadelphia with the latest. Hey, ron. Hey, good morning to you. One person was shot and killed by the patient allegedly but police say it could have been much, much worse happening in a small hospital in darby, pennsylvania, a philadelphia suburb and that patient heavily armed and police say on a mission to kill thwarted by the quick acting doctor who happened to be carrying a gun himself. This morning that doctor is being called a hero. He allegedly killed one person but police say 49yearold Richard Plotts almost certainly would have killed more had he not been stopped in the shootout with his own psychiatrist. If the doctor did not have the firearm, hed be dead today and i believe that other people in that facility would also be dead. Reporter the brother of social worker, theresa hunt, killed in that shoot much out agrees. The doctor who was actually armed, i think, was incredible, what he did. Reporter according to Law Enforcement officials, plotts who prosecutors say had a long record of arrests and mental illness, arrives at mercy fitzgerald hospital. Around 1 30 in the afternoon on thursday. Around 2 20, plotts and hunt enter dr. Silvermans office. Minutes later an argument breaks out. That is when dr. Silverman tells police that is when he pulls a recover from his waistband and fatally shoots hunt then turns on the doctor. They say silverman gets his own gun from a pock and the two men Exchange Gunfire in the small office. Silverman is wounded but escapes. Plotts is critically wounded and is captured by two other hospital workers. Police say he was carrying 39 extra bullets. Crime scene photos obtained by abc station wpvi show the aftermath of the gun battle, windows shot out and bloody handprints on the carpet. Now theresa hunts brother is wondering why the Family Member known as mother theresa to other s had to die. Im angry at the gentleman who did it and id like to know why. Plotts is in Critical Condition expected to survive. Hell face murder charges. Dr. Silverman was wounded in the hand and grazed in the head by a bull debt lew he is okay. Now, it is hospital policy that weapons arent allowed on the premises by anyone but security and it appears dr. Silverman had been bringing his firearm to work for years. We dont know why but today his hospital is praising him for his brave action and looking forward to welcoming him back to the hospital. Save so many lives that could have been lost. S. , nearly 500 firefighters in california are battling a massive blaze about 45 miles outside of sacramento. A huge plume of smoke is blanketing wine country in northern california. So far the blaze has torched nearly 600 acres and is only 20 contained. 40 nearby homes have been evacuated. And, meanwhile, in Washington StateOfficials Say a total of approximately 300 homes, twice as many as previously estimated, burned in the largest recorded wildfire in that states history. And a manhunt is under way in philadelphia for two men who allegedly carjacked an suv and then plowed into a group of bystanders with that vehicle killing three children, siblings and critically injuring their mother. The family was selling fruit on a Street Corner for their church when the carjacking occurred and the suv struck them. The suspects ended up crashing that vehicle into a tree and then fleeing on foot. The person whose car stolen was critically injured in that crash. Some of them forced to sleep on the terminal floor. Others were a bit more lucky. The first night we basically went to a hotel and begged for a room.
