WRAZ WRALs 7AM News On Fox50 October 7, 2016
Any time on wral. Com but right now we want to know what elizabeth thinks of all this. Boy, we do. This is so interesting. This storm has been affected so much by the steering currents in the upper levels of the atmosphere and sometimes, its cut and dried. But in this case, there has been a lot of moving parts, and we are trying to figure out which one will affect us, and even now, the track of the storm has shifted and in this case, potentially shifting back closer to
North Carolina
. This is a look at the the storm, and we get a new track update at the top of the hour and little has changed, moving northeast at 14
Miles Per Hour
and coming past
Cape Canaveral
with reports of 107 wind gusts, 101
Miles Per Hour
for the wind gusts in
Cape Canaveral
and strong winds stretching across a good bit of florida. Taking over the satellite goes. It will continue to hug the coast of george georgia and
South Carolina
. And here is the forecast track, closer to the coast of
North Carolina
saturday night into sunday morning. Well drill down on that more closely and zoom in in a couple of minutes. Heres a look at the zoomedin version here. The eye of the storm only 10 miles off
Cape Canaveral
right now, so they are feeling the worst of it. Around here, were looking at heavy rain potential, 5 to 10 and a
Flash Flood Watch
for the southern part of the viewing area until sunday, and well see rain this morning and on and off through the day today and a high of 73 and bryan , with this kind of rain we see accidents. Have we seen any . We havent had anything major, a couple of minor in the last bit on i40 in durham county. Lets take you out there. Not seeing any evidence of the crash but there was a reported incident here earlier. It doesnt look like i40 was affected by that at all. But here is another situation i 40 in johnton county at the clayton bypass, what appears to be a disabled vehicle, and not see anything issues whatever on 540. Here is a look at the driveheim heading into, 16 minutes, 6 minutes from wade out to i540. Bryan, thank you very much. And we are getting into the newsroom at the damage from florida, melbourne, florida buffeted strongly. And this incredible video showing a reporter blown away by the hurricanes winds. She is still reporting. Kudos to her to get people the information they need but she has to hold on to a tree to be able to stand up there safely. Obviously, we want all of these reporters and everyone on the field to remain safe. Hurricane matthew is a category 3 storm and still packs a serious were getting estimated of 340,000 power customers without power and its still a massive storm. Were still awaiting confirmation on landfall in florida. Jay gray reports up the coast at
Daytona Beach
. Reporter moving along the florida coast, matthew is in many areas overwhelming. Starting to see the impacts. Its a monster. Reporter violent wind, sheets of rain, and a growing surf with the potential in some feet. I am begging you at this point to understand the seriousness of this storm. Those types of storm surges, that is not something you want to get caught up in. Reporter electricity has become a luxury for many in the strike zone. Tens of thousands have lost power and that numbers expected to grow. More than 11 million along the east coast are currently under a hurricane warning. Airports, closed. Businesses boarded up and shelters filling up. Like ive been in it can get. Reporter bad now and likely will get worse. Emergency
Officials Say
the storm is an extreme threat to life and property and warn that the impact am be devastating to catastrophic in areas with as many as 10 million possibly losing power for weeks. The extreme conditions in florida a warning for those in georgia, north and
South Carolina
as matthew continues beach. People along our coast in
North Carolina
are doing all they can to prepare for matthews arrival. Wrals leyla santiago joins us live from
Wrightsville Beach
. Leyla . Reporter lena and bill, rain is coming down and its very windy, and you can see how things sway because of the wind that we have seen this morning and now that the sun has come up, i want to turn around and bring you over to the see how choppy it is given the winds that were seeing here on
Wrightsville Beach
this morning and heres something that will put it in perspective. This from the
National Weather
of service,
Hurricane Matthew
could set new local records for the wettest 40day period in history for wilmington, potentially beating floyd and last octobers flood. So that is really putting in perspective how much wind and next to new days. So
Emergency Management
officials have declared many in the area a state of emergency and calling for voluntary evacuations for surf city and
Brunswick County
and we are talking movement of people as officials are making sure priorities such as special needs will have arrangements for transportation. Well be out here and monitor the situation and bring you updates as they occur. Thanks, leyla. As
Elizabeth Gardner
told us earlier, the area where leyla is right now,
Wrightsville Beach
, wilmington could see as much as 15 of rain which could be a devastating blow to the port city area. You can keep up on the storms have interactive tracker. The
Florida Governor
is saying that the impact could be deadly. See how the
Hurricane Force
winds impact your body. And we have the satellite governor mccrory is attacking roy cooper on the state crime lab. Well, we know roy cooper and we know the problems he discovered when he became attorney general. Roy found a backlog of over 5,000 dna test kits and years worth of shoddy investigations. But he cleared the backlog. And roy cooper helped us solve over 2,000 crimes and put 165 killers and rapists in prison of course, all eyes are on
Hurricane Matthew
as we track as right now its pounding
Cape Canaveral
. Nasa scientist dr. Scott brown joins me not from there but 1 of our best tools are the satellite pictures. Thank you for being with us, and tell me. We are getting word of 107, 101 mile per across
Cape Canaveral
, the launch pad. What is that do there in
Cape Canaveral
. A lot of the satellites are there, the other facilities expected it closed down the base and they have people on site to monitor the situation and deal with issues that come up. Fortunately, the center has remained offshore, so we are not getting the worst of the bad as what we feared last night. Reporter thats good to hear, definitely. And i know you use satellite to help to determine the strength of the storms. How does that work, exactly . Nasa has a variety of satellites to measure the earths atmosphere and one of the most important one is the hurricane that measure the global position measurement, the gpm. You can see the heavy rainfall near the center in and in the outer rainbands, and we can use some of the information to get clues about whether or not a storms likely to intensify or weaken depending on how it interacts in the environment and in the core. Reporter and you pass that information along to the
National Hurricane
center . We make that data freely available in near realtime to any user. Our data is put online. Typically, the
Naval Research
website so users like the
National Hurricane
center can have access as quickly as possible. Reporter in
North Carolina
, the big thing will be rainfall and satellites can measuring rainfall. We typically think of radar for that purpose. Yeah. So the gpm satellite has a radar on it, and it has another instrument called a microwave imager that is able to map out over a position of the storm. The gpm is a linchpin of regional satellites that provide information on the rainfall accumulation and storms to especially measure rainfall in areas that dont have radar like in haiti. We got an order of 20 of rain during the passage of matthew. Reporter dr. Braun, all of that is really, really important and so relevant to what is happening. Thank you for taking the time appreciate all that you do in nasa. Bill and lena . Excellent information, elizabeth, thank you so much. Investigators release new information on a deadly commuter train crash. The sequence of event that is unfolded before the crash. The sequence of event that is unfolded before the crash. And but i spent my whole life fighting back. So you can imagine what i thought when i saw donald trump say. I dont know what i said, ah, i dont remember that reporter he is talking about suffers from a chronic condition that impairs movement of his arms. I dont want a president who makes fun of me. I want a president who inspires me, and thats not donald trump. 7 16, and, gosh, were all talking about
Hurricane Matthew
and not only the affects in haiti and florida but in the carolinas. And
Cape Canaveral
, seeing the images, the wind and rain, they are getting pounded. Because of the center of the storm. Its maybe 10 miles offshore and this is a live view of
Daytona Beach
. Yeah. And this is just north of
Cape Canaveral
. And its worse than this at
Cape Canaveral
but you can see the storm surge happening. Just incredible, and very strong winds. One thing as this storm continues to trek northward t will gradually weaken. Its as strong as it will be as it heads up to
South Carolina
and
North Carolina
, get weaker. Lets go to that radar picture of whats happening around
Cape Canaveral
. We have it zoomed in nice and tight and there is a heavy rainband swinging around almost through
Cape Canaveral
, and i will get over there and point that out, right here,
Cape Canaveral
sticking out, and literally, the center of the storm is 10 miles at best from
Cape Canaveral
. And because this sticks out spot in terms of wind. It has the most wind damage. In terms of rain t wont matter so much why you are. Why where you are. Heavy rain even on the west coast of the florida with tropical stormforce wind there is. But in the last 30 to 45 minutes weve had reports of wind gusts at 107, 101
Miles Per Hour
, so theyre really feeling it. And the true eyewa right on top of folks there. As it continues towards
Daytona Beach
, it will hug the coast and may not move away from shore any more than it is as it continues to move up north. And you can see the storm spinning and the rain, really the rainbands extending up to
South Carolina
now. And this over
North Carolina
, not technically the rainbands from matthew but certainly, its pushing moisture from the atlantic into
North Carolina
well continue to have rain on and off through now and sunday morning. This is typical as the hurricane is ahead of it, and thats critical to
North Carolina
. If most of the rain with the storm were south of the center, we would have much less to worry about but its pushing the rain ahead of it, and the center isnt likely to make landfall in
North Carolina
but well feel the brunt of the heavy rain and look how close the center does get to us. The gpm 60
Miles Per Hour
off the coast of
North Carolina
with all the rain pushing in. Winds will probably not be a huge deal even though well have patchy
Power Outages
. Tropical storm warning in effect for the wilmington area now and heres a look at futurecast. Watch what futurecast does with the center of the storm. It brings it to
South Carolina
and follow long with me as it continues to move and it really carolina. Thats one of the computer models. A lot of them are trending in that direction, so 5 to 10 of rain from raleigh southward to raleigh northward, looking at 3 to 5 of rain and heres more specifics on what were expecting for impact, 10 to 15 of rain, and winds gusting at 50 to 60
Miles Per Hour
with the center coming a little closer. 5 to 7 from
Elizabeth City
Cape Hatteras
and in our area, 2 to 5 of rain and critical here, down south, 4 to 7 and it could be more than that. This morning, its raining and youll run into messy conditions on the roads and well get into the heavy rainbands on saturday. 73 today and temperatures in the upper 60s on saturday and sunday and well likely have rain on sunday morning and then start to see clearing. Coming up in half an hour, well talk more about the winds chances are of
Power Outages
. Bryan mims in for
Brian Shrader
and i have a feeling as we get into the 7 00 hour well have bad conditions. Well, we have a few accidents on the map, nothing serious and wet roads and elizabeths right. We probably will see more problems in the next hour to hour and a half and i have an accident on highway 54 at
William Moore
and hillsboro western parkway but it doesnt appear from the sensors that any traffic is backed up because of those accidents. Heres a look at i40 out of
Johnston County
, the i40 and clayton bypass and jones sausage road, building of traffic westbound 15 minutes from highway 42 to 440 and i40 to lake wheeler road, not too many delays this morning. Back to you. The commuter train that slammed into a packed terminal in jersey last week was traveling at twice the speed limit according to data obtained from the ntsb and it sped up for about 30 seconds, and then it appears that the engineer hit the emergency brake less handle it 1 second before impact. A final report could take more than a year to wrap up. And colombian president
Nobel Peace Prize
for his efforts to bring the civil war efforts to an end. He was born into one of the areas wealthiest families and received his degree from harvard. This week, we learn something unusual about brian. I didnt know that about you. And sometimes, its okay not to share. [laughter] sometimes. What are we doing . Okay. We are going to make a chocolate
Peanut Butter
smoothie. Get your day going or a perfect after school snack. Reporter simple, combine chocolate milk and
Peanut Butter
and its smooth and then add crushed bananas and crushed ice. Liquefy . Yeah. Reporter and get it to the right consistency and youre done. Four ingredients and you are ready to start the day. Peanuts. It will hold you through the day . Chocolate and
Peanut Butter
. Hard to beat it. Brag about at dpac. It could help with future upgrades. Narrator what would you do if you were sent to washington . Cut the debt . Create some good jobs . Youd make peoples lives better. In washington, richard burr has made his own life better. Richard burr took 1. 1
Million Dollars
from the
Insurance Industry
and wrote a plan to privatize medicare. The
Insurance Industry
would make billions, richard burr. Twenty years in washington. Serving himself. 7 26. Im bill leslie with our top stories. Testimony continues in the

Hurricane Matthew
. The charities wanted to help the homeless and are working provide shelter and meals for them tomorrow if needed. Rain could be the big issue in
North Carolina
. Here is elizabeth. Raining right now as a matter of fact. You can see the showers on the skycam in raleigh. Rain becomes very heavy saturday and flooding is a possibility. We could see 5 to 10 of rain in parts of the viewing area. Heres a look at your futurecast as we head through the day today. Notice the showers will continue on and off today and it may not but we really get into the heavier rain on saturday. Expect highs of 73, and a very rainy and windy day saturday and winds gusting up to 30 myers 30
Miles Per Hour
and 50
Miles Per Hour
around goldsboro. With the rain we are seeing this morning, bryan, seeing accidents because of that . We are seeing them pop up. Look at the map. They are popping up every like. Glenwood avenue at i440 causing a backup on glenwood. Not as bad as it was but you can see the lights in the background. And i40 at white oak, traffic is thick out of

Hurricane Center is giving us at least a status update on this once an hour. We wont get another track until 11 00 a. M. And moving west at 14
Miles Per Hour with winds at 120
Miles Per Hour. Weve had a number of reports from
Cape Canaveral right here of 107mile per hour gusts, 101 mile per hour gusts, and we havent seen as many as those lately and it looks like the center is there. Its heading to
Daytona Beach. Well check in in just a minute. But first i want to show you where the track is going, really hugging the coast of
South Carolina and brushing by wilmington and passing as close as 50 miles. What that means for us is heavier rain than we anticipated yesterday and maybe stronger winds even though i think the wind will not be the biggest issue. Lets go to
Daytona Beach and see whats happening there. They are getting pounded. We looked at this picture about 20 minutes or so go. Water now where there wasnt earlier. Another view of whats happening at
Daytona Beach, and they are really getting slammed. You can see the strong winds with the palm trees just bending over and the waves on shore and they will have a lot of the storm surge. A lot hasnt happened yet but you are seeing a lot of overlap there now. And lets talk about what we are expecting, a
Flash Flood Watch in effect for most of our counties. We can take a go back to the graphics and see actually, taking a look at the radar to see exactly whats going on with the storm. Well head back in if i can come back in and point that out to you, i will do so. But, anyway, you can see the center of the storm is turning right across east of titusville and
Daytona Beach. We have a
Flash Flood Watch in effect for southern counties, 5 to 10 in this area and triangle area and 2 to 3 at that time virginia line. And we are dealing with rain already and this brings us additional accidents. Temperatures dont climb much, in the 70s, and bryan mims is in the

Police Officers car, so expect slowdowns in the area and heres a look at 440 and lake boone trail. Getting thick on the beltline but not see anything accidents there, no traffic coming to a stop. And heres i440 at capital boulevard, slow going on the westbound lanes of the beltline the drive times, garner, 14 minutes from 42 to 440. Back to you. All right. We have latebreaking numbers from florida right now in terms of
Power Outages. More than 300 homes and businesses without power right now as a result of
Hurricane Matthew. More than 350,000, i believe, is what the ap was saying there. And, of course, what was predicted was that it could get up to 2 million power. So, obviously, thats a positive that its not so many, but this slowmoving storm is just beginning, and this is a live look at
Daytona Beach. And hurricaneforce winds at
Cape Canaveral that juts out a bit. The storm got very, very close to the area, the eye of the storm as its moving up the florida coast headed towards what youre seeing right there, the state. The southern part of the state is looking pretty good. Airline flights are expected to rum in the southern florida locations perhaps later this morning where as some of the airports in the central to northern part of the state will remain closed. Leyla santiago is in

Take a look behind me. You can see the chopper water out there now that the sun has come up. We can get a better view of that, and then ill bring you to another side where you can wind sort of swaying around. You can see the trees and the leaves showing you the wind as well. And you know, just this morning,
New Hanover County saying that rainfall at amounts and winds from matthew are expected to cause flooding and downed trees and
Power Outages. New

North Carolina. The one good thing about it is once it gets off the coast of wilmington its a weak hurricane, still likely to cause wind issues. Us. And well head back out to whats happening in florida, a zoomedin look at the center of circulation and well pause the loop, and here is the latest view. The center of circulation here is literally 30 miles from titusville and only 15 miles from the coast, and they are seeing that heavy rainband with a lot of strong wind wrapped around it. We havent had reports from
Cape Canaveral recently but were getting reports from
Daytona Beach about 60 mis from the center of circulation and were seeing 60 to 70mile per hour wind gusts in
Daytona Beach and that, of course, is where the storm is headed next. Well talk about the impact here. We have a tropical storming in effect for the coastline around wilmington, surf city through myrtle beach and down toward georgia as well. So, certainly, the warning is up for the coastline. Lets check out futurecast and talk about where it brings this
Center Inland there at
Daytona Beach. That may not happen. Even if it doesnt happen, i think the rest of this is interesting. Its more aggressive in bringing the center of circulation inland in florida and the coast through the
Southeast Georgia area. And here is the storm sitting pretty much right on top of charleston and continues to move right up through myrtle beach. And theres the center of circulation in wilmington. At that point t blows right over wilmington. The official track keeps the center of circulation 50 miles offshore. Wind will probably not be as big of a deal with this but rainfall is, and our potential has gone up overnight. The heavy rain, potential of 10 and maybe 15 in wilmington with a
Flash Flood Watch in effect until sunday morning for the southern counties. This is a look at the likely the triangle and 2 to 3 in the virginia line and 6 to 7 in fayetteville and 16 in wilmington. Watch what watch what happens. We may have the heaviest rain between wilmington and fayetteville so wilmington, 11 and fayetteville, 10, and this area may get 15 inland. We may see 5 to 6 of rain if the track co northwest ward and thats the trend were on. We have a flooding threat. Its really everywhere but especially for the counties that saw flooding last week. The winds from the north, the triangle northward, 15 to 20 and gusting 25 to 30, and that is likely to cause
