Im lena tillett. And im bill leslie. We have the latest on the School Closings. Heres a look at the list, and lets begin with the list now. Lets move to the next page. Thank you very much. Clinton and Cumberland County, edgecombe, and Franklin County schools all closed today. There are more here. Halifax county harnett, hoke county and johns ton monday and tuesday. Sampson, wayne county schools closed today and tomorrow and Wilson County schools. The full list is scrolling at the bottom of your screen and on wral. Com. Hurricane matthew unleashed its fury this weekend with mass there are reports of high water in cumberland count yes at least 700 people were rescued. Bryan mimes mim mims is along the cape fear river. Reporter we had to move from the cape fear. I planned to be there at 7 00 but we had to move inland, if you will, to mirror lake, a remarkable scene. Mirror lake drive, look at the chewed away, just chewed away, took a bite out of the asphalt and it looks like a canyon down there. You can see the red clay and debris down there in the pit. There are a number of roads in Cumberland County and the sandhills that look just like this. If you are commuting, watch out for barricaded roads. I was in downtown, and a number of traffic lights are out the weekend. As bill and lena mentioned, there were a number of swift water rescues, hundreds. And in fact, more than 700 people were rescued, stranded Truck Drivers and people trapped in lowlying homes and power remains out for thousands of customers in the fayetteville area. Crews are making progress. They had 20,000 without power on sunday morning and that i just checked their website, 1500, definitely making progress. I want to show you a picture. I was driving around looking at the areas that were besieged with water. And yesterday at noon, cross creek, the water was sweeping across the road. Now, mostly dry with deposits of sand and the road is mostly closed. And this is a look at an 18 wheeler. I was reporting on this yesterday. Ground but just a little ways down, the water recovers the road. Water from rock fish week and water from Cumberland County, but this morning, that stretch is open. That stretch is open, and this stretch of 95 is closed and like it will take a while to repair there. But portions of i95 between benton and the county line are closed. Dunn, harnetcounty, shut down. My partner, darryl prior, tried to get through and had a difficult time. So if youre heading south on the triangle, be aware that 95 is closed in harnett county, and well be monitoring the situation in cumberland throughout the day and let you well savor each one. Bryan mims, live and that you think so much for your hard work and reporting. And it show that is were affected, too, to get and get to the locations. Thousands of homes are still without power. The situation is getting better. At 1 point, 3 quarters of a Million People were without power are working to get it back on. Mikaya thurmond is at the staging station, and i understand you know where they are headed first. Reporter thats right. The big question on everyones mind is where will the 10,000 crew members be headed, and theyll prioritize them and start with hospitals and areas that have the biggest amounts of people affected. If one outage impacts thousands, theyll start there and then go down to the smaller neighborhoods and residential areas. So some of the 10,000 crew members will be headed out and i want to talk about the numbers. We know now that about 500,000 people in North Carolina are without power and of 10,000 of them are affected by duke energy. I did speak with a Duke Energy Spokesman a few minutes ago and he said they do have a long road ahead of them. This has been an evolution. This storm hit us harder than we expected it would. We expected fewer outages than we have to deal with but we have 6000, 7,000, 8,000 folks more coming. Roughly 10,000 more will be working in the field so its like a military operation. Its very similar. You have remote food trucks, tents, and we have tents for the folks to camp out. Reporter i hope you can see how busy its been. Since ive been here we have seen crew members come and load up and be prepared hour days and crews are coming from as far as New Hampshire to help out and get the power restored as quickly as possible. Im sure well help when they need it. Mikaya thurmond, thank you. Look at this flooding in avon. High water made the homes look covered. See we are seeing this all over the state. A thin strip of land called the outer banks. Whats going on, elizabeth . Yeah. Before we talk about this morning, those pictures are amazing. Yesterday, we were looking at a 5 to 6foot storm surge and now its well offshore, they should see it going down in dare county but they were expecting record flooding in hatteras. Outside. Mikaya had her coat on and i had a jacket this morning, too. 46 in buck hor and buck horn. And the temperatures should be in the low to mid40s tomorrow. So cooler. Stepping out, mid to upper 40s, 61 at lunchtime and a high of 67, and sunshine, wall to wall with low humidity and looks like a beautiful day. We have a Flood Warning in effect for river flooding, and some of the rivers and how high theyll crest and when the water should go down in a few minutes. But there are a lot of roads closed. Brian shrader is here with more. There are indeed at 7 09, elizabeth. Were starting to see accidents in raleigh, monday morning traffic accidents but a lot of icons indicate where the roads are closed due to flooding or storm damage where the road has or downed trees. Its a big mess from the raleigh area through the i95 corridor to the east. Lets talk about the interstates that are closed, i 95 from between dunn and benton to the North Carolina and South Carolina line, south of lumberton and i40 closed between 96 and 55, roughly between benton and newton grove. County blocked. 301 at church, 231 at spring hope and 58 in nashville near u. S. 64, by no means a comprehensive list, just three major ones. And a reminder that if Traffic Signals are out, dont forget to treat that as a fourway stop and be very careful. If you see drive around them. Crews in many cases have to check the soil before they can reopen them. It can be very dangerous and expect detours and delays to pop up anywhere. Back to you. Thank you, brian. Our coverage of Hurricane Matthew continues after the break. How it impacted the coast and where communities are asked to boil water. Plus, the nominees meet for round 2 of the debate series, arsenic, mercury, lead. Thats what you got. Duke energy endangered the Drinking Water of 1. 6 Million People in North Carolina. And what did duke energy get . Mccrory got thousands in Campaign Contributions from duke energy executives. And what will you get . Years of higher electric bills to pay for cleaning up their mess. Working through water system issues. Fayetteville and sanford issued advisories for their systems and wayne and johnston counties have put advisories in place for some customers. In wilmington, high winds from the hurricane brought down tree limbs. You can see it here. Residents started to clean up as soon as the sun came up yesterday. Cutting up the debris. Actually, we were a little scared when the sun went down because of the uncertainty and how unknown things would be, and then the backside of the storm came through and there was a little bit more wind. We heard some big, loud thumps and had near misses with the house with the tree limba that had fallen. But we made out okay. The Hanover County Emergency Managers say thousands of people power. The outer banks werent spared from damage. This is what highway 12 looked like in buckston near the Cape Hatteras lighthouse. The storm surge left a muddy mess. On to Something Else that wasnt too pretty, the president ial debate last night. The fact check of claims made by Hillary Clinton and trump. And major flooding along the tar river in Edgecombe County, the warning from officials as the floodwaters continue to after 20 years in washington, were learning lots about richard burr. First, he opposed a bill prohibiting Insider Trading now we learn burr had over 100,000 in oil and gas stocks while he backed legislation giving tax credits benefitting Gas Companies. And oil and Gas Companies donated over half a Million Dollars to burrs campaigns. No wonder richard burrs wealth has increased over 500 since hes been in congress. Thats making washington work for him. On sunday, we saw really incredible rescue operations unfold live with the u. S. Guard. I imagine that today well see more rescues happening. Thats a great question. I imagine most of those who needed to be rescued were rescued yesterday but there is a lot of water out there that will recede slowly. I imagine there are people that do things they shouldnt like going around the barricades and get into trouble but hopefully, they rescued everybody out of homes that needed it. The barricades are there for a think well see that when all the statistics are laid out but most people died in this hurricane because of their car being in floodwaters. Lets take a look at whats going o wilmington, looks beautiful. We checked in with crews down around the area yesterday and there was minor damage it seems to some of the homes along the coast especially around wilmington but for the most part, there wasnt too much to report. The heaviest rain, of course, was here raleigh and say, wilmington along the i95 corridor. 48 around here and temperatures really chilly with a northerly wind and the dew point at 43, so it will feel this afternoon very much like yesterday. 41 in roxboro, roxboro could drop into the 30s this morning and tomorrow morning, i anticipate. No frost likely tomorrow, but the triangle cell at the end of this month, so around the corner. 44 in Southern Pines and 52 in rocky mount, the warm spot. The Flood Warning continues for raleigh eastward and especially along the i95 corridor with heavy rain and schools are closed in the Flood Warning area and most people died during the tropical system by driving car into the road and most children died because they are playing in the the kids are out, its a beautiful day. Urge them to stay out of the floodwaters, so dangerous. They get swept away in an instant. The heaviest rain is in purple, 15, and the red areas with over 10 of rain, just an incredible amount of rain. You can get the idea who saw what looking at the contours. The tar river will be one of the rivers that will stay flooded in places for a fairly burg. This is on the top end of the river basin. Its crested with moderate to major flooding and it should come down below flood stage tomorrow. Thats not going to be the case farther downstream. Julia sims is in tarboro and is in the area that flooded during hurricane floyd, devastating flooding. We are not going to see that kind of flooding at 41 feet but we will be in the major flood to rise to that point and may stay well above flood stage well into the weekend. That will be impacting folks in the tarboro area for at least a week. High pressure keeps things nice and dry, nice weather, but expect a cool start to tomorrow. Our normal high for this time of year is 74 degrees and the records are now in the upper highs in the 90s once we get past today. A beautiful weekend, 74 on sunday and nice looking weather this week. A lot of folks will be doing cleanup, and its nice to see that we dont have more rain in the forecast. Brian, i know you have a slew of closed roads. You wont be able to cover all of them. Not all of them. But well take a look at the live commute map at 7 21. We have a few accidents related traffic including one on glenwood near st. Marys street in the beltline but overall, the major routes are in good shape. With school out in wake county, we dont have School Traffic gumming up the roads, and no unusual delays on 40 westbound through garner. Its a smooth right out to the airport and rtc but the icons are indicating the barricades and cars in the water where flooding and the interstates closed really from raleigh on to the south and east, and lets talk about some of the interstates closed this morning, i95 closed in both directions between benton and the North Carolina and South Carolina line. Also i40 is closed in Johnston County between 96 and 55 between benson and newton road. Wilson county, a look at the roads close there had. 264 near wilson closed between 40 and 49 mile markers in wilson and 301 at ward boulevard and highway 58 is blocked north of homes church. Again, these are not comprehensive lists, just hitting three of the major secondary roads closed in the area. Back to you. During last nights debate, that were not true. Trump claimed that clinton laughed at a girl who was raped when, in fact at no point was clinton seen laughing in the interview and a decade later, clinton expressed horror but was laughing about the procedural details. Trump claimed that clinton wanted to raise taxes. Hillary clintons proposed tax increase would affect the wealthiest 5 of americans according to the noon partisan tax policy center. Trump is proposing massive tax cuts under his plan and the bottom 80 would see their taxes raise by 1 . The debate between goff more mccrory and roy cooper you can watch live on wral. So the cooler temperatures that we have seen so far, 67 today and tomorrow and wednesday, 72. Brian . 7 27, elizabeth, and a lot of people will run into closed roads as they head out, i95 closed in both directions between benson all the way down south of lumberton and i40 is newton grove. Lets like a look at 301 in four oaks is closed and raleigh road in benson is closed at sanders road. Do not drive around barriers even if the road appears dry.
