I love horses, and i wish macaroni was in here, but lets take a look and see what we find. Here is macaronis stall right here. Isnt it great . Theres one more thing i got to show you, so follow me. Right now, this is setup as a basic guesthouse, but you are not going to believe what downstairs. So what is a president ial retreat without an original Nuclear Bomb Shelter . Dissenting the stairs, it really makes you think about what a different time it was back then. There was once a steel door back here. This, my friends is a bomb shelter. This was meant to withstand the unthinkable, and if the unthinkable had happened, the kennedys would have been safe, but let me show you the coolest part behind this door is a tunnel that the kennedys would have used, should there have been an event, would have left the house, crawled through this tunnel and into this bomb shelter. The crazy thing is that nobody knows where the tunnel begins inside the house. You really feel like you are part of American History when you stroll around this property. The family spent their last weekend together here at wexford. Just two weeks before president kennedy was assassinated in dallas. Thank you so much for letting me take you on a tour of this iconic property. What was your favorite part of the wexford . Tell us on twitter with openhousetv. After the break, we had do a home that was once a monastery. Welcome back. Next we head to annapolis, maryland, where we visit a beautiful estate. The stately Georgian Manor has come a long way from its Humble Beginnings as a monastery. Im steve, and this is my wife maxine. We would like to welcome you to our home. Theres a lot to see. Lets head on up. 80 monks used to live here. The area we are standing and now is the formal entryway, in keeping with the true character of georgian architecture, it opens up symmetrically. Under the arches, you go into our grand parlor. I think now, max and i will split up and show you a few of our other favorite rooms. This area here is called the conservatory. This connects the wings of the house. We did this with a lot of glass so we get a lot of Natural Light. When we open the doors, you feel like you are part of the outside. Back in the old days, when this was for the monks this space was a chapel. One unique feature at the top it has a steeple and a church bell. The feeling maintains the appearance of the chapel. Its a place great for entertaining. We have a lot of large parties. The space is wonderful because we have a lot of windows where Natural Light comes in during the daytime. This is our master suite. We purposely designed it to have three distinct areas. The center area is the bedroom itself, and it is flanked on either end by two sitting rooms. One of the things that was important to steve was that he begin every day with views of the river, which this room definitely has. Steve and i have our own bathroom and dressing room, reflecting each of our distinctive personalities. This is personally one of my favorite rooms of the house. I come down almost every night and i shoot a game of cool. The room is made really from one large tea tree that we purchased in asia. We hand carve the ceiling and walls. I wanted the room to look like an old sailing ship, and i hope we capture that flavor. Another of my favorite rooms is the wine room. We also can have dinner in there. In fact, two nights ago, i cooked up some of the famous Chesapeake Bay rockfish that i caught last summer that i had in the freezer. We added this during our rehab because we love the water. We are water people, and it is just a way to bring the water inside during cold winter months. We spend quite a bit of time here. We used it for both exercise and relaxation. We really enjoyed having you guys spend the day with us at our home, the friary. We enjoy sharing with you what makes our house special. Still ahead a decorator and design bloggers shows us welcome back. In her widely read law, lauren writes that luxury design can also be natural and relaxed, and its an aesthetic she lives by in her widely read blog. I am a decorator and oakton, virginia. I started out decorating part time about five years ago. Soon after that, i started a blog on a whim. I share client before and after projects and little tidbits from home. My style is relaxed and natural so that a house feels like it has been collected over time versus decorated. I am excited to show it to yday. Beginning here in the living room, my goal is to take a very relaxed, comfortable feeling for me and my family. I went with a twosofa arrangement, which really made the fireplace become the focal point. The creative, relaxed, natural layered look. A lot of times, i take a natural fiber area rug and layer it with a more comfortable rug on top because i love the rug so much and did not want to cover it up and i wanted to keep the space feeling open i just took something that was visually light. Its a lucite and glass coffee table. Finishing out the room, with finished out this massive sputnik chandelier and had it made by a designer in california who did a lot of the lighting for mad men. Up mad men. This is a small, dark space compared to the rest of the house, so i decided to embrace that feeling and make it feel cozy and warm. I started by having the cedar siding that would normally go on the exterior of the home added to our ceiling, which gives it a little natural feeling in here. Then we added the spare hearts that i have loaded with all my china and vintage pieces. I found this chandelier and brought it into this small space. I think its a great idea to bring an oversized overscaled pieces to make a smaller room feel larger. For the dining table, i went with a rustic look. I wanted to complement it with a mix of metals, so i used a brass flatware silverplated salt and pepper shakers, and bronze on the fixture. Finally in the master bedroom most of my inspiration stems from the exterior garden we created right outside the bedroom. Its a beautiful natural space that is ever changing the seasons. I wanted to keep the pallet inside neutral to complement what was going on outside. Mix of things i found at antique stores, it provides an additional focal point. I decided to do a combination of an antique siding desk and a dresser. This is what is called informal balance when things arent actually a balance when things are actually in balance but not identical. In order to make these work, i cut down the legs on the dresser so that their height would be the same. Thank you so much for coming on this tour with me today. I hope you were able to walk away with a you tips on how to create a modern, rustic home. Coming up, we learn how to modernize the interiors of a classic townhouse. Plus, we check out a georgian estate built nearly 200 years ago. Ring ring . Progresso its ok that your soup tastes like my homemade. Its our slow simmered vegetables and tender white meat chicken. Apology accepted. Im watching you soup people. Make it progresso or make it yourself you say avocado old el paso says. Zesty chicken and avocado tacos in our stand n stuff tortillas. record scratch you say stand n stuff tortillas old el paso says. Start somewhere fresh welcome back. Next we are stopping by and landmark mansion in one of the most coveted areas and quaint and classic georgetown, a cultural hub for d. C. s a lead but rarely has an estate like the Williams Addison house been available. Note almost 200 years ago, it still maintains its original boundaries, making it one of the few escapes of its kind in washington d. C. Welcome to the historic Williams Addison estate in washington, d. C. Originally built in 1817 in the federal style and then remodeled in the late 1880s in the victorian style. As you enter, you find yourself in the gracious entrance hall. This is a place where guests were meant to feel welcome and impressed upon first arrival. Just after guest arrive, they would be brought into the parlor, the living room, and this is a room with perfect proportions, just the right size for entertaining people with a funeral arrangement in front of the fireplace. Coming out of the dining room, we find ourselves in the main hallway. The original house stops right here so this is all an addition we built really, a room designed for ballroom scale entertaining, so it has hallways, living rooms and conservatories. These rooms can work separately or together. The conservatory is one of my Favorite Places in the house. It is surrounded by gardens tall glass windows. You really feel like you are outdoors here. Then there is a patio in connection to the rest of gardens. This room brings us into the 21stcentury. It is a family room and kitchen completely different formula than the rest of the house. Its informal, casual. The kitchen is located in what is arguably the oldest room in the house. The family room this is where people spend their time, so we wanted to make it the nicest room in the house. We built a glass wall here, the biggest winners in the house the biggest windows in the house that capture the garden. One of the most appealing things about the property is that it is the original estate, enjoying the use of style to the west, to the east. This facade is preserved in its original detailing, original bricks, original windows. The only thing we added was a porch to take advantage of that exposure. What you see here is really what people saw for 200 years. Historically, a master bedroom was only that just a bedroom. No closet, just an arm or armoire and maybe a commode. Now it is everything. We have a sitting room study, an elevator, tremendous bathroom, and a great read room. Bedroom. In a city full of history, this remains one of the greatest dates. On that heritage, we tried to remodel and extend this home for another 200 years. Coming up after the break design tips and inspiration from zoe feldman. Welcome back to open house. Interior designer zoe feldman shows how she infused a youthful, edgy style. I am interior designer zoe feldman. Welcome to washington, d. C. Today, were going to have a look at a beautiful victorian townhouse that i designed. I believe good design always has an element of tension. In this case, we had a classic georgetown townhouse and a client who wanted to modernize to make it feel a bit more relevant and a bit younger. Im going to show you how you can use basic Design Elements to make any space more modern chic thomas and even a bit edgy. Lets have a look. This is the gallery the first thing you see when you walk into the house and serves as a bridge between the living room and dining room. I like to create a big visual impact right away. It gets people excited for what is to come and entices them to want to see the rest of the home. In this case, were reupholstered a vintage bench into this vibrant yellow. I love to add unexpected color that does not necessarily show up in the house but does not also compete with the room. Its a great way to add some personality. I also love a large console. It provides an opportunity to showcase your personality through objects you collect through the years. We created an interesting tension in the living room with a monochromatic textured palate. One of the important things to remember is the amount of people who can be seeded in your dining room also need to be accommodated in the living room. One of the bigger challenges in this living room was its size. We wanted to accommodate the maximum amount of people so we had to incorporate what we called occasional seating like the bench seat over the radiator. I always like master bedrooms to be a bit softer and maybe even a bit feminine yet whimsical and playful. We found this great vetting, and its natural, bright color kept it from feeling too traditional. Again, we use a lot of texture in the room. I hope you have enjoyed seeing how you can easily blend traditional and modern elements to get a classically relevant space. Thank you. Thats all for now. A go this super bowl sunday mitt romney gets out just as he was being pushed. I decided its best to give other leaders in the party the opportunity to become our next nominee. With romney out, the republican field is now set. Which candidates benefit from the romney departure . Ill be joined by mitt romneys 2012 running mate, congressman paul ryan. Plus, isis executes a second japanese hostage. Former defense secretary robert gates joins me on the fight against the terror group. Also, are the big hits the fans love jeopardizing the future of football . I wasould forget things, i would forget places. I would have this erratic behavior towards my child. What more does the nfl need to do to protect players from brain injuries . And how young is too young to let your child play football . Finally, how athletes are like politicians, and why this im here so i wont get fined. Im here so i wont get fined. Reminded us of this. There is no controlling legal authority. There is no controlling legal authority. Im chuck todd. And joining me to provide insight and analysis this morning are cnbcs jim cramer, Savannah Guthrie of the today show, kath line parkleen parker and mark halperin. Well, it is your pre pregame show here on nbc, home of super bowl xlix. All joking aside we will talk about the game about head injuries and the future of football. Lets start with the most important matchup of all, for other people at least next year, thats the 2016 president ial race. The republican field is now set. Mitt romney deciding not to run for president a third time. Republicans had been full of praise for another romney run. Right up until the point when mitt romney actually considered making another run. Then former romney supporters decided they really didnt want to take yes for an answer. In fact, here was a typical example. There is not a lot of good press in it for somebody losing the election and coming back four years later and becoming a nominee. Thomas dewy is the best example in our party. Didnt work out too well. Who better to join us than congressman paul ryan, mitt romneys running mate from 2012. Also chairman of the influential house ways and Means Committee. In fact, ryan may be the most important republican in washington these days because if president obama is going to get deals done with the new republican congress, most of them are going to be brokered by ryan. In fact, ryan surprised many when he signaled his willingness to work across the aisle, at least on taxes, when he praised president obama the morning after the state of the union. Well see if we can get a tax reform package done. Im glad that he sort of held back on the partisanship in the demagoguery. I guess i would say in his speech he dialed it down a bit from what he were used to seeing it more divisive partisan speeches from the president. He didnt do that as much. I think thats a good thing. And oh, sure. It is bittersweet to me in that sense. It is a perfect style of mitt romney zigsdecision. Country first. He did what he decided was best for the country. The statement he made reflects that. Hes a class act. Does this mean it makes it easier for you to support your home state governor who is likely a president ial candidate. As you know it was two weeks ago i was named the chair of the trust helping reince priebus. Im helping with the general election for the eventual nominee. That means i need to be neutral in this. Had mitt jumped in, that would have changed circumstances. But since im the chair of the trust chair of the funds to get ready for the eventual nominee, quires my neutrality. Scott walker is a great governor, good friend of mine, a reform governor, hes done Amazing Things. We like it say in wisconsin, hes so good he got elected four years. Are you also would you be willing to go through the vetting process again to be a running mate . I havent given any thought to that. Ive been through that thats not a no. I havent been asked that before. I havent given any thought to it. I decided early on in this year to pull myself out of this president ial contention because i want to focus on my job as chairman of the ways and Means Committee. I think i can make an enormous difference for our country, where i am, and help our party put together an optimistic agenda for the country to show how to restore a healthy economy upward mobility, all of those things. Thats where im focused now. Thats what im focused on. I havent even been i dont think it is worth discussing. Lets move to that. It was interesting in your book, you wrote this, youve got to be willing to take criticism even from your friends and trust that the people will understand that governing requires tradeoffs. You sounded like somebody that wanted to make a deal with the president right at the state of the union. Ans that didnt criticize his state of the union. Does that mean you are ready to be a compromiser with the president when it comes to tax reform . If we can find Common Ground the answer is yes. We got to go the economy growing. We have had such a stagnant economy the slowest recovery since world war ii, middle mmc income wages are stagnant. We have to break out of the slog. I believe there are things we can do hopefully in the next year to get this economy growing faster. You believe the tax code is a way to do that . Absolutely. We really believe that we should reform the entire tax code for all people individuals families, businesses, simpler, the whole thing. But it is pretty clear to us that the president doesnt agree with that on individuals. So the question is, which i dont know the answer to, is there Common Ground on aspects of tax reform that we think can help grow the economy . For us, Small Businesses have to be a part of that puzzle. Well find out. Lets get into some specifics. A couple the tax cuts the president is proposing is expanding the earned income tax credit, for working families that dont have kids. Childless adults. Yes. And expanding the child care tax credit. What do you think of those . I think i actually endorsed the idea of the eitc first one. The first one. I think thats something that actually pulls people into the workforce. It is one of the more effective welfare reforms we had. Thats something that i think with we should Work Together on child care . Child care. Child care or child tax credit. Child care tax credit. Thats something were going to have to look at and see if there is
