There is breaking news tonight about the doomed egyptair jetliner, critical information about what happened in the final moments. There is evidence of a catastrophic series of events near the cockpit. Automated computer messages transmitted in flight from the plane to its Maintenance Base suggests systems were failing. Smoke was filling the front end of the airplane, all in a span of three minutes. But the pilots never radioed a may day call. That word coming as search crews have found human remains, luggage and seats in the water. Now search ships will try to locate the black boxes. Nbcs tom costello has all the details. Reporter the question tonight, was there a fire or explosion onboard flight 804 before it went down. Nbc news has confirmed as authentic an automated computer message from flight 804 to its Maintenance Base. Three simultaneous events at 26 minutes after midnight gmt. Two sensors from the cockpits right rear window go off. At the same time, a smoke sensor in the forward lav. One minute later, smoke in the avionics compartment that controls the plane. Another window sensor. 29 minutes after midnight, problems indicated with the pilot controls and computers critical to controlling the plane. Minutes later the plane went off radar making erratic turns and falling from the sky. John cox is an airbus pilot. We dont know exactly what it is. But its a clear indication something was terribly wrong on flight 804. Reporter perhaps a sudden fire or electrical failure or even an explosion near the galley. How did it get there. Investigators are looking at anyone with access to the plane while it was sitting on the ground, including ramp woshers and caters and fuel truck workers. If its an insider and he put a device, if it was somebody who had knowledge and put it in an area that could be close to a fuel line, or in some other area that they knew it would be catastrophic, thats very troubling. Reporter if it was a bomb, it would be the third attempt in seven months. In february, a bomb in a laptop blew over somalia. Last october, a russian jetliner blown out of the sky over egypt. Isis released a photo it claimed showed the bomb packed in a soda can. At Charles De Gaulle airport in paris, dozens of employees with alleged ties to islamic extremism have had to turn over their security badges since last novembers deadly attacks. Ground at four different airports in 24 hours before the crash. In cairo, and in paris. Investigators will have to review all of the people who had access to the plane at all of those airports. Lester . Tom, you raise a lot of issues. Lets bring in former ntsb investigator. Youve been studying these acars messages. Could this have been an electrical short or someone smoking in a forward lavatory who accidently set off a fire, or do you see something suspicious in the sequence of timing of all of this . Theres definitely something suspicious, lester. Electrical fires dont burn that fast. Of course, if somebody were to have put a cigarette in a trash can with paper towels, it definitely wouldnt have burned that fast. It would have set off that sensor. The flight crew is trained to handle those type of fires. They probably would have made a radio call. This is something thats more catastrophic, more extreme. When you look at the timing of the last transmission and the start of those acars messages tom talked about, its only two minutes, maybe two minutes, if not less. That leads us to wanto device was placed in a very critical area of the airplane, where as tom pointed out catering equipment is stored. Is that stuff ever screened before it gets on a plane . Typically not. Its basically a trust factor with the company whos providing the catering. So they dont screen the food. They dont check and make sure that every can has liquid in it. They dont open them up and things like that. If there was a device in a catering cart in the forward galley, that forward galley butts up against the bulkhead wall to the cockpit. So theres critical elements there. All the Circuit Breakers are just on the other side of that wall. Its all very disturbing and unsettling. Greg, thank you. Trump making clear where he stands. Were getting rid of gunfree zones. 13 million right to carry permit holders in the united states. I happen to be one of them. In the past nobody knows that. Boy, would i surprise somebody if they hit trump. Reporter trying to convince wary gun owners trump 2016 is far removed from trump in 2000, who wrote in his book, the america we deserve, i generally oppose gun control, but i support the ban on assault weapons, and also support a slightly longer waiting period to purchase a gun. The Gop Convention fast approaching, trump hopes to charm the doubters. And so far, its working. A new poll showing 8 in 10 gop voters now believe Party Leaders should embrace trump. But some gun owners have a long memory. And here at the nra, trust is hard won. He does have a record of flexibility. On this one t is a core issue. And so im hoping he will stick to his words.
