And crews keeping busy repairing a water main break in northern virginia. We have Team Coverage tonight of all that out there. Doug kammerer, you said earlier that were going to be in the freezer for several days. That the story youre sticking with . Thats still the story were going with, jim. Ill tell you what. Temperatures in the freezer for sure. But not just for a couple of days. We normally see this during the winter. One or two days below freezing and maybe in the 20s. Were in this for about a week to ten more days. Its really going to be that cold. Well take you down towards union station. Notice the flag blowing in the wind. That wind is really kicking up. Winds upwards of 15 to 25 Miles Per Hour. And with the cold temperatures already, you get the devastating windchills. 4 below in gaithersburg. Dulles coming in at 4 below zero. And annapolis at 5 degrees. A very cold night. Its going to be a very cold morning. Thats why we have the windchill advisories up once again from Loudoun County over towards montgomerie county and Howard County and maryland down towards northern fauquier and back to the west. Youre under there for windchills between 5 and 10 below zero tonight. Even d. C. And southern maryland, still cold for you, just not at that advisory criteria. Will we be there again . I think so. And maybe even some colder air coming in. Ill show you when it moves in, and when we see our next chance of snow. Thats moving in too. Thanks, doug. Our Team Coverage continues tonight with jackie bensen. She is live in alexandria, where crews have been on the scene for hours, trying to repair a broken water main near a shopping mall. Reporter doreen, we just learned some new information. This is at duke street and north jordan. Were told duke street, which as you know is a major artery is likely to be affected into the Early Morning hours. The reason for this, you can see the icy road here. The reason for the length of time to repair it is the size of the water main were told. It is 12 inches in diameter. Just when it seemed like it couldnt get any colder, it also got very wet. In the fox chase neighborhood of alexandria. Thousands of gallons of water gushed from a water main break on jordan street near the intersection with duke street. Its amazing. The whole sidewalk has gone down. The street has come up. And its just its flooding. Its crazy. Its wild. Its the same thing that happened a couple of years ago. The street came up about three or four inches and the sidewalk went down. And i think its the tree. I think the tree is what is kind of tearing everything up right there. Reporter the water main break affected traffic on busy duke street. Rather than close it down entirely, Alexandria Police shut down just one lane. Motorists were forced to drive through the icy water. With caution. And were told that homes and businesses in this area are likely to have their water affected. In some case, not have any water until possibly 10 00 tomorrow morning. Live in alexandria, jackie bensen, news4. A similar scene in the district. Crews say theyll be out tomorrow morning to fix this problem that has been made much worse by the freezing cold. Cars are stuck along Taylor Street in northwest because a Water Main Leak has frozen into one thick sheet of ice. Neighbors say the leak has been a problem since early december. Icy sidewalks all over the city have also been a problem for pedestrians. This weather is also leading to yet another round of School Closings and delays in virginia. Culpeper, fauquier, fredericksburg and loudoun counties as well as Spotsylvania County schools all closed tomorrow. In terms of delays, fairfax county, calvert county, manassas city, and Prince William county schools are all opening on a twohour delay. In maryland, Prince Georges County schools also delayed for two hours tomorrow. D. C. Public schools will open on time. The Alexandria City School board met tonight. They met to decide how theyre going to make up for snow days. They voted to make up those days by having class on days that were supposed to be scheduled days off. Right now the plan is not to make up snow days by adding days at the end of the school year. Several local districts are facing longer school years because theyve already run out of snow days. Were following breaking news in maryland where a house explosion and a gas leak prompted part of a neighborhood to evacuate. Chopper 4 flew over the scene of meadowvale road in glen burnie. There are no reports of any injuries. Fire Officials Say the fire leak is still active. Utility crews are on the scene. Theyre trying to assess the situation there. Tonight there are murder charges in the stabbing death of a 7eleven clerk in Montgomery County. Police say they found sean king with blood on his hands and a box cutter in his pocket outside the store in gaithersburg this morning. An employee claimed king attacked abdul gafar without warning. Customers described him as hardworking and well liked. Still no word on a motive, but police say it did not appear to have been a robbery. A mother in Prince William county in virginia has been arrested after her 4yearold son called 911 to say that he was hungry. Officers responded and found the little boy by himself at the home in Frank Haskell court in bristow on wednesday. The childs mother is love franklin. She came home while police were still on the scene. She is being charged now with child neglect. Tonight we have learned lawyers plan to file an appeal hours after a man was sentenced in the murder of redskins star sean taylor. Cara maloney is in the studio with the developments out of florida. Reporter it was one of the worst tragedies in the history of redskins football. Sean taylors killer has been sentenced. Eric rivera will serve 57 years in a Florida State prison. Rivera was convicted this past november of firing the shot that killed taylor. It happened during a robbery attempt on taylors home. The gunman and four others admit thigh they thought the redskins player would be on the road with the team. But a knee injury kept taylor home that fateful night. Today in court with taylors family, he said it is a night he will always regret. And im going to have to live with the consequences. And im truly sorry for your loss. One man there that night pleaded guilty. Three others still awaiting trial. Thanks. An arrest tonight in a heist so notorious, it became part of the movie classic goodfellas. Some robbers got away with 6 million. That was back in 1978. Vincent asaro has now been charged with helping direct that plot. A bunch of guys burst into a Lufthansa Airlines warehouse at jfk airport in new york and got away with cash and jewelry. Asaro is now 78 years old. He is charged with racketeering and conspiracy. Police also arrested four men accused with asaro of being part of the same crime family. New numbers tonight concerning that Security Breach at Nieman Marcus. The retailer now says about 1. 1 million credit and debit cards may have been compromised. The breach took place between july 16th through october 30th of last year. The retailer adds that at least 2400 of those cards have already been used by hackers. Customers who shopped in a Nieman Marcus store or at a last call Discount Store thats owned by Nieman Marcus were affected. Virginia has become a battleground on gay marriage. Republican lawmakers there are threatening to cut off funding to the attorney generals office. They say mark herring is required to defend the ban on samesex marriage according to the state constitution. Herring is the new attorney general. He says his office will argue in favor of allowing gay marriage during a federal Court Hearing next week. Voters approved the ban in 2006, but polls now show a majority of virginians in favor of allowing gay marriage. In his final state of the state address, marylands governor Martin Omalley spelled out his goals for his final year in office. He did that today. Omalley hopes to expand prekindergarten to every child in the state. Thats to help increase Educational Opportunity theres. The governor reserved his strongest words for a push to raise the minimum wage to more than 10 an hour. It is good for every marylander because it is good for our entire economy. Republicans oppose that increase. They say Business Owners will then hire fewer workers. They claim it could also put Maryland Businesses at a disadvantage compared to neighbors states. A secret audit that uncovered problems with speed cameras in baltimore may not lead to any changes here closer to home. The Baltimore Sun obtained the audit. It found speed cameras in baltimore may have wrongly issued 70,000 tickets back in 2012. The vendor that operated those cameras also provides cameras in Montgomery County. But police in Montgomery County say while they use the same vendor, the police themselves are in complete control of the speed cameras. Next at 11 00, lost in the snow. How local crews tracked down an elderly woman who was all alone in the bitter cold. Weather conditions today also created delays on metro. Well tell you what you need to know before tomorrow mornings commute. And they paid money and spent months planning, only to be left stranded. Tonight news4 is getting answers after hundreds of local students paid for a ski trip they never got to take. A third person has died in the aftermath of this awful pileup involving 15 semi trailer trucks and 15 other vehicles in northwest indiana. This happened along the busy i94 corridor in michigan city, about 60 miles west of chicago. Cranes had to be brought in to lift the semis off the cars. A band of lakeeffect snow had been falling in the area, and witnesses reported whiteout conditions at the time of the wreck. Back here at home, metro trains are still scheduled as normal tomorrow. But the rapidly dropping temperatures were blamed for causing a nightmare commute this morning. Some passengers tweeted pictures of the crowds on platforms during long delays. It was all because of a cracked rail Near National airport. Metro says the tracks expand and contract in extreme weather. Amtrak trains will still be on modified schedule tomorrow because of all the ice and snow. Infrared Technology Helped save the life of woman in Prince Georges County. Her name is edith charles. She is 79 years old, and she wandered off in the snow and that bitter cold last night, and they found her just in time. It looks like somebody is sitting down. I believe they were waving their hand when our cruiser went by. Prince georges county police rescued charles in minutes. She disappeared while she was waiting in the car for her daughter to drop off a friend. Her daughter is thankful because mrs. Charles suffers from dementia and does not know english or her address. Trouble tonight for hundreds of d. C. Students. They paid money to go on a ski trip, but many of them never made to it the destination. And now School Leaders admit they dropped the ball. Reporter she goes to stuarthobson middle, one of fi five schools scheduled to go on the ski trip. The ski trip is canceled. It was really sad. Reporter according to d. C. Officials, Capital Entertainment services didnt pick up the kids at the last minute because of a contractual disagreement with the school district. Karen ertz says she spoke with School Officials today. Dcps had not paid the bus company. And what the bus company said was that there was a dispute about the bills. Reporter the deputy chancellor of d. C. Public schools told us, quote, i could go on as to why this happened, but believe it is best to own the mistake, apologize to you, and work to ensure this doesnt happen again. End quote. We called capitol Entertainment Services to get answer, and no one returned our calls. Dcps said the company did pick up kids at moden. Maurey Elementary Students went on the trip. They hired another bus company at the last minute. And the kids would like to walk down the stairs outside of the schools and go to the slopes. Well, d. C. Public School Officials tell me theyre working on that. They plan on rescheduling the trips so the kids can go skiing. Im shomari stone, news4. Well, thats a shame. But from the looks of things, there will still be plenty of snow available whenever they reschedule. Thats for sure. It seems endless. It really does. The ski seasons needed a winter like this. The last couple have been so warm. Theyve been wondering where the snow. Now you got plenty of snow. And now you have plenty of cold air to make all that snow. And boy, is it cold for sure. Right outside our studios, look at the wind. Guys, we have to walk to our cars. In just a couple of minutes. Could you bring mine around, please . No problem, doreen. Ive done it before. Ill do it again. No problem at all. Look at that wind out of the northwest at about 12 miles an hour. But still gusting to 20 to 25. 17 the current temperature with those Winds Continuing to gust. Now take a look at the numbers. There they are down at the airport. This is what were sitting at right now with the 17 degree temperature. Windchill of 4 at the airport. 10 degrees in gaithersburg. Windchill here at 0. 12 in manassas. 11 towards martinsburg. 10 in win chest were the windchill well below zero. Huntingdon 15. Look at the winds, gusting upwards of 20 to 25 Miles Per Hour around the region. Thats going to continue through the evening. Even 31 towards pax river. And the wind adds so much bite to the cold air. Your windchill advisory does not include d. C. , the i 4695 corridor southward. But everybody back to the west. It does include loudoun, fauquier, winchester, gaithersburg and frederick for windchills 5 below to 10 below. Just because youre not in the vieszry doesnt mean were not going to get close to zero. Camp springs 1 below. Nothing is going on in our area. Dont expect any rain or snow. Of course it would be all snow if we had anything coming in. But nothing today. Look where it is snowing, though. And this really shows you the cold air. It is snowing right now at galeforce winds, right on the gulf of mexico, snowing all the way down this. Houston under a winter storm warning. Houston, texas, and this is the reason why. Weve got the polar express. More cold air continuing to come down. The jet stream dipping all the way down towards the gulf, and the poles are wide open for business. With these little systems, they continue to bring more and more cold. And that pattern is simply stuck. It cannot move. Its going to have a hard time doing. So thats why were going to be stuck in it for some time. Now 23 a high tomorrow. Windchill around 10. Extremely cold tomorrow. 36 degrees on saturday. But with 35mileanhour winds, thats not a good day at all. And right now, were thinking a pretty good chance for snowshowers. And i do think we will see some light accumulation in parts of the area. Maybe upwards of an inch. This is something well of course continue to watch for you. 32 degrees on your sunday. 30 degrees on monday. And then, hmm, you add em up. That would be nice. You can add up two of these days. And that would actually be the average High Temperature for this year. But look at that. 21 degrees on wednesday. That is all we can get once again. And just about every day, well have winds. Were talking about windchills each and every day. So its not like 36 on saturday is warm. Im expecting the windchill on saturday to be between 18 and 23.
