We typically think of osteoporosis as a condition that affects women, but doctors say a lot of men are at risk too. The trouble is theyre not getting tested. Practically the first words out of her mouth were you have osteoporosis. And i was just shocked. Robert spizano didnt have any of the typical risk factors for osteoporosis but when he broke his arm after a seemingly minor fall it was enough to catch his doctors attention. I just thought, im a guy and im only 54 years old and i really was resistant to it. The call from Medstar Georgetown University hospital was part of the fractured Liaison Program which flags patients for osteoporosis screenings when they suffer severe breaks or fractures after low trauma falls. Dr. Andrea singer is the medical director of the program. In general we think of it as a womans disease but men are not immune to this. Reporter dr. Singer says being female is the single biggest risk factor for osteoporosis because once women reach menopause their estrogen levels drop off and that can lead to bone loss. But there were plenty of other risk factors that affect both genders. Family history, smoking, alcohol and caffeine intake poor fitness and low calcium and vitamin d levels. Yet dr. Singer says its still rare for men to undergo screening. And the reason that its difficult to look at men is in terms of doing some of our standard screening or diagnostic studies, namely bone density with a dexa machine, those studies are generally not well reimbursed by medicare. So it is difficult to get a screening bone density paid for. Dr. Singer says even the National Osteoporosis foundation recommends a baseline bone density test for men over the age of 70, but its typically not covered by Health Insurance. There are fewer people in general getting screen and that presents a problem for a condition that can be perhaps prevented certainly treated. Robert spezzano underwent the screening and was diagnosed just a few weeks ago. Hes now taking vitamin d supplements and hes made some Lifestyle Changes includeing doing more walking and resistance training. He hopes it will prevent more broken bones in the future. As i get older, az get less steady on my feet i have to really consider whether i want to run that risk. There are some cases when Health Insurance will cover the cost of a bone density screening for men. You should check with your provider before you rule out testing for osteoporosis.
