Today, there was some Harsh Criticism for metro as the National Safety board released its findings on the cause of the deadly smoke incident at the metro station. Adam fu adam tuss was at the hearing. It sounds like safety board metro an earful. Reporter first and foremost, lets tell you what they found about the probable cause of the episode. They said it was a prolonged short circuit that burned up a bunch of power cables and equipment in the tunnel here at lafont plaza, because of lakshmanagement and inspections allowed to go on over a period of years. They said this was the 9th investigation since 2004 on the metra system alone. They dropped a bombshell. They said throughout this investigation, they found that metra was actually sending trains with passengers on board into the system to look for the cause of smoke and fire episodes. Basically, sending railcars with passengers to be smoke detectors throughout the system. That brought about a huge response from the ntsb. Listen to what one board member had to say. This just seems represent prehenceable. The o employees and passengers as essentially canaries in the tunnel. That seems a very dangerous and risky practice. Reporter now, we asked the metra general manager about that statement afterwards. He says, that is no longer done. What will happen if there is a report of snomoke or fire on th tracks is that the train will be offloaded and the operator goes to take a look and see if there is smoke or fire. Then, you have to ask, arent you seeing the train operator to look for smoke and fire . A whole host of things that came up. Not a very good day for metra. They are going to have to go about and make some safety fixes. We know that the district, marily maryland, virginia, they all contribute to metras funding and oversight. Was metra the only one to take the brunt of the blame here . Reporter certainly not, chris. If kn lafont plaza episode t was a failure on so many levels. Responders had a tough time communicating. Metra couldnt get the word out. Poor response times and poor planning. D. C. Fire and ems was called out specifically today for not being prepared to go into a metro tunnel and deal with the situation like that.
