Police say the multivehicle crash started when one car spun out of control. The Chain Reaction crash shut down an area of highway for hours. It took about four hours to clean up the mess. We are going to get some effects. As weve been talking about, the last couple of days, it will be minimal for us. Boston area, phenomenal pictures where mike seidel to the east of boston. For us, you can see where that snow is. Boston, new york, coming into the philadelphia area now. For us, were seeing light shower activity in the form of some rain showers. We even saw the suncom out. Over the next 12 hours, the biggest impact is going to be the wind and much colder temperatures. We have a wind advisory in effect through 6 00 a. M. Tomorrow. Winds could gust upwards of 50 Miles Per Hour. The area in the brown there, including loudoun county, northern fauquier, towards frederick county, maryland and everybody back to the west. Winds could gust upwards of 40 miles an hour and that will put windchills in the 20s by around 11 00 tonight. If youre going out this evening, get ready. The wind is making it way in right now. Well see windy conditions at 8 00, 11 00, through tomorrow morning. 5 00 a. M. , 7 00 a. M. , 29 to 30 degrees. The windchill will be between 15 to 20. We are seeing impacts. Were being told it could be a couple of days before things get back to normal because of the storm. You can already see the impacts here at Reagan National. Luckily, i got out. A lot of other flights werent so lucky. Thats what you hear when you talk to people coming in from the entire northeast today. Look at the departure board to places like new york, boston or providence where the snowfall totals could be measured in feet and you can see nothing will be coming or going. Brian jones much germantown waited for his wife to get in from boston. Her airline actually got in touch with her about leaving early. They contacted all of the people scheduled to fly today. I understand it and offered options to switch seats. Airport leaders hearsay people headed to the northeast need to be ready to wait. Clearing the snow from the runways will be a significant task at those airports. It will also be a significant undertaking for the airlines to for some, a canceled flight means getting creative. Andrew and helen from long island couldnt get out of new york, they took an amtrak train here to d. C. And now they catch a flight out of bw marshall to get to their cruise which leaves from florida. We started at 4 30 this morning out of long island into penn station, the amtrak down here and now were going to the airport. Amtrak says it does expect to pick up extra riders that now have canceled flights. Virginia wet roads and slick conditions this morning forced schools to start a couple of hours late today. Luckily the temperatures stayed above freezing. Nothing stuck to the roads. Fortunately, it was more of a rain event for most of us here in the d. C. Metro area. Within just the past 30 minutes, power was restored in Prince Georges County. This comes after as many as 50,000 people lost power for much of the day. It was all thanks to a fallen tree. Most of the outages were in the central part of the county. Our bureau chief, Tracee Wilkins is live with the latest. Tracee. It was an amazingly crazy day for parts of Prince Georges County. Folks who did not have power and businesses as well. A large number of the schools as well. After a long day of a lot of folks being in the dark, as you said, pepco, they believe all the power has been restored. The power outage experienced in Prince Georges County was so widespread that at its peak, 50,000 customers were in the dark. Lost power around 11 30. I tried to cut all utilities and things like that. It didnt work. Pepco Officials Say a tree landed on a transmission line in a deeply wooded area. Causing the massive outage. It knocked out power to four substations. It caused an evacuation at a Shopping Center and nearby homes. The safe ways generator kicked on and caused an underground tran former to shake and smoke. Were told by pepco transmissions in the unlikely event of an explosion, it would be powerful. The loss of power also affected this dialysis center. This woman said she had just dropped her husband off for his treatment. As soon as i got home, they called me and me i had to compaq and pick him up. When i got around here to the turn right there, i had to keep straight on through. Neighborhoods throughout central and southern Prince Georges County were impacted causing power to go out at 30 County Schools. The Central High School students described what it was like in their school. The principal came with the flashlight and directed everybody. Officials decided it would be best to keep students in the school. This Elementary School parent questioned that decision. They should have called. To give you the option to pick the kids up . Exactly. Prince georges County SchoolOfficials Say that they decided to leave the kids in the school because with so many houses without power and then the dark intersectio intersections, they did not think putting the kids on the road was a good idea. As it turns out, most schools got power back up before the end of the day. Im Tracee Wilkins, news 4. Former Prince Georges County councilwoman was released from prison last week after serving one year for her role in a corruption scheme. It was spearheaded by her husband who was former county executive jack johnson. He remains in jail. When the couple was arrested in 2010, Leslie Johnson tried to hide thousands of dollars in her undergarments. She also admitted flushing a 100,000 bribery check down the toilet. Johnson served her sentence at alderson prison camp in West Virginia where Martha Stewart served her time. Were following a developing story out west where the hunt continues tonight for christopher dorner. Hes the former lapd Police Officer accused of three recent murders. Some reported sightings today have not panned out. Authorities said they dont know if hes in that Southern California mountain where theyve been focusing a teng tension for the past two days. They vow to stay there for now. His burned out pickup truck was found yesterday. Dorner is suspected of targeting Police Officers and their families out of vengeance. Tragedy for a Prince Georges County family. They want to know why a young father died so mysteriously. Sorrow at the thompson home in pan tal en. The family gathers to mourn the loss of charles thompson. He was 27 years old. The father of two small children. He had a job, he was going to school. He was shot to death early this morning. You always think that they will bury you and here i have to prepare to bury him. It happened this morning shortly after midnight. A man drives a car to the Volunteer Fire Department. He parks the car in the lot over here and then he gets out and runs to the front door of the firehouse. He rings the doorbell and then tells a firefighter inside that a man in the back seat of the car, he need some help. And then that friend, that socalled friend of the victim, he runs away. In the back seat of that car, in the parking lot of this firehouse they find charles thompson. He had been shot in the head. They take him to the hospital. Hes pronounced dead there. This afternoon, police back at that firehouse looking for evidence in this unusual case of murder. Where did the shooting happen . Why did that friend runaway . Turns out the car he was driving was stolen. There are a lot of questions here and tanya thompson, she wants some answers. As any mother would, we just want information. At some point they will have to move inside until this thing passes. Unfortunately, the wind really picking up now, unfortunately, it looks like these conditions are going to continue a bit longer than first anticipated. The blizzard warning in this area has now been extended through 1 00 tomorrow afternoon. So there are so many millions of families who are going to have to deal with this through the weekend and now likely into monday or tuesday. Theres a big concern about Power Outages because the wind is going to reach hurricane levels in some areas. A lot of people prepared for this going to the hardware stores, to the Home Improvement stores, getting what they need, also at the grocery stores. A lot of the shelves were empty. People stocking up. Realizing theyre going to be holed up for quite some time. The good news is it looks like people are paying attention to this. Were going to see a few more things happening over the next couple of hours, even in our area. Even though weve got the biggest impact, were still going to continue to get impacts overnight tonight. Take a look at whats going on tonight. Some rain and snow in the northeastern portions of maryland. A few light showers around coming through town and down around the potomac. Towards fredericksburg. These were rain showers. We wont see any more of those. Those will quickly move on through as the system moves to the north and east. This is a combining of two systems. For boston, the combination really doesnt mean a whole lot except for adding more moisture. For new york and philadelphia, these two storms need to come together in order to give philly really significant snowfall, imt. I think it will come together a little too late. Their totals will be way down. Maybe the 3 to 5inch range rather than a foot like places new york, pboston will see. Over 6 inches in new york. Theres that three in philly. Of course, nothing for us. Up towards boston, over 2 feet of snow. Potentially upwards of 27, 28 inches. The wind, this is something we will not miss out on. Look at the winds near boston. Over 50 Miles Per Hour gusts. For us, over 40 mile an hour wind gusts. In new york, winds up there upwards of 30 to 40 miles an hour. Lot of people out and about in new york.
